Star Wars R2-D2 #7 | Centre Leg & Driving | James Bruton

Ғылым және технология

This time I'm working on the centre leg so I can test the 2-3-2 conversion and drive around some more.

    If you take your remote apart you should be able to attach a spring to make the "throttle" channel operate like the other side. I did the same thing with my lawnbot, There are usually all the little hookup points on those sticks, and they just omit the spring for the desired action with those cheap avionic radios.

    Bravo!! I do have one small concern about the tgreaded rod passing through the foot. It looks as though one of the casters can block the rods travel if its in the dead center of the hole. If so, would there be room for a wedge or something to slightly twist the caster to one side?

    This droid is looking amazing. One thing you can look into is an exponental ajdustment on your radio. If you can turn it up then you can have finer control of the slow speeds compared to right now. With it being so fast it may be hard to drive through people at cons and demos

    The performance is better than I expected. Especially driving in 2-leg mode is really cool. What is awful however is that sound while retracting the carriage for the middle leg. Why is that? is it just the motor being this loud? Everything else is so smooth and quiet.

    Wow it just looks amazing rolling around and it even looks good without panels, in fact im now beginning to think adding panels will just make it look a bit more boring, that said the sides are a little too open when in three leg mode so im hoping there are some detail parts to go in their.

  • @beezer387

    Awesome progress James!. Do you think due to your ninja flex wheels being too slick on smooth surfaces that you could print different wheels with tread patterns to allow to grip better on smoother surfaces?

    I have an idea for the R2D2 projector. A small pane of glass on a retractable antennae arm and a "Aiptek Mobile Cinema Pico Projector Q20", for example, on the news of Princess Lea is seen. Try that!

  • 9 жыл бұрын

    Nice, have you thought about using some ball wheels like these of the 914 PC-Bot, or even printing your own caster ? I'm still impressed about the ninjaflex drive belt. You should consider printing some cheap encoders for the wheels (with 2 light barriers) to synchronize the motors. I'm sure it will be difficult to drive straight forward without controlling.

  • 9 жыл бұрын

    ***** Well you are right, I think about omni wheels for a long time but still can't find a good use and design that's practical usable. I also don't like the caster, they are a little bit unpredictable, need a lot of space...

    ***** What do you mean feel ever bump? When the wheel is moving forward it is like an ordinary wheel. So i assume you are talking about the sideways motion, which would only occur when it is turning. There are two ways these wheels will expedience a "bump." First would be when it it hopping up a a curb. The jolt that is created in dependent only on the material of the wheel(Softer=less jolt). It is not dependent on the diameter because both wheels would be making the same high change in the same amount of time. The only thing that is determined by diameter is the height of the curb you can roll over. Which would only be an issue if you had to hop a 1cm curb whilst turning simultaneously, which i doubt will be done often. The second source of "bump"s would come form uneven surfaces. Bit this is solely determined by the contact surface area between the wheel and the ground. Yes the castor has a higher contact surface area, but with omnis you can always stack additional omnis side by side to increase the contact surface area

    loved the spinning around but why are the motors making that humming sound wail driving around?

  • @tenebrasolanum4215
    @tenebrasolanum42159 жыл бұрын

    You could have two separate wheels in the centre, which would allow it to spin. No motor needed.

    For a future project, instead of doing all that tedious measuring, and risking getting it wrong, you could just make some sort of adjustable mount.

    I think you should be moving the center foot with a belt rather than a studding, because as it is, is using a lot of revolutions and moving really slow. So, yeah, maybe a belt or a rack and pinion system. And if you're worried about rigidity there, you could put a smooth rod instead of the threaded one. That said, though, I think there could be an even better solution for that center foot, because you need only two stages, in and out.

  • @hglenn55
    @hglenn559 жыл бұрын

    Just a question. Have you thought of using NinjaFlex for the infill for the foot? That would allow the NinjaFlex to help absorb and dampen bumps and thumps on uneven ground. The thumps coming up through the foot can probably be severe.

    Will be easier to drive once you have the microcontroller interpreting the rc signal, rather than direct output to motors, you could use the right stick to go forwards (L+R forward), wheel turn (L+R forwards but one faster than other), spin (L forwards, R backwards or vice versa), reverse (L+R backwards) and wheel turn in reverse (similar to forward wheel turn but in reverse). The left stick is free to be used for other actions or left unused, however switches could use the left stick signals to activate special features, like conversion between 2-3 leg mode.
