Star Wars R2-D2 #7 | Centre Leg & Driving | James Bruton
Ғылым және технология
This time I'm working on the centre leg so I can test the 2-3-2 conversion and drive around some more.

Im so impressed with the amazing design and function of this R6 droid Your an amazing designer James Amazing work
You never cease to amaze me, ive loved astromechs since i was a kid, but you bring alot more reality to these beloved droids. Keep it up up!
Nice work James, really impressed with the Droid. always cool to see them and yours puts a whole new spin on the concept that I think will really help the astronomic builders groups across the community.
I really enjoy watching you build. That R2 unit is so cool. You are a busy man.
Looks amazing. Love it.
You have some skills!!! Been following since the start and LOVE what you have done so far. Great to see what 3-D printers can do.
Wow, coming along really well. Great job.
looks amazingly put together
You're a clever one! Fantastic job James it’s looking Great, CP3O would pleased
Nice work! It looks like fun to drive around! Can't wait to see it finished! :)
looking good
That's an awesome couch!
If you take your remote apart you should be able to attach a spring to make the "throttle" channel operate like the other side. I did the same thing with my lawnbot, There are usually all the little hookup points on those sticks, and they just omit the spring for the desired action with those cheap avionic radios.
wow this is awesome
Awesome, can'*t wait for further progress! :)
I just can't stop admiring this build!!! I've been craving a 3D printer but have no use for one, are actually considering to get one for me self at my 19:th bday so I can do something like this as well ^^
Nice to see the progression of the project. You might want to get a lipo charging/storage bag just to be safe.

***** Probably is the case but I do remember reading of instances where the battery ignited while not in use (They had recently been charged or used). Always good to be on the safe side.
It sounds pretty awesome )
Fantastic dude :D
You should create a gauntlet type controller. So you could control the droid from your wrist. That'd be so dope but it's looking great!
Excellent work as usual. I hope you are planning on putting a camera on that thing so you can record it's point of view. You should also implant a projector, It may not be 3D hologram, but it would be cool still.
The updated R2 is great, and awesome. Good work, but I thought today was going to be the Xenonorph

***** so they switched days? Cool, can't wait to see all 3 projects finished
Bravo!! I do have one small concern about the tgreaded rod passing through the foot. It looks as though one of the casters can block the rods travel if its in the dead center of the hole. If so, would there be room for a wedge or something to slightly twist the caster to one side?
This droid is looking amazing. One thing you can look into is an exponental ajdustment on your radio. If you can turn it up then you can have finer control of the slow speeds compared to right now. With it being so fast it may be hard to drive through people at cons and demos
You need some grease on that thread! :)
Awesome work James! I'm impressed with the design. Remind me if we meet up at a Star Wars Celebration in the future, not to go head to head against you in the Droid Races! :)
The performance is better than I expected. Especially driving in 2-leg mode is really cool. What is awful however is that sound while retracting the carriage for the middle leg. Why is that? is it just the motor being this loud? Everything else is so smooth and quiet.
I think your brilliant at 3D printing
That third wheel motor is loud as hell
now put the hulkbuster Head on it :p
Wow it just looks amazing rolling around and it even looks good without panels, in fact im now beginning to think adding panels will just make it look a bit more boring, that said the sides are a little too open when in three leg mode so im hoping there are some detail parts to go in their.
Awesome progress James!. Do you think due to your ninja flex wheels being too slick on smooth surfaces that you could print different wheels with tread patterns to allow to grip better on smoother surfaces?
I have an idea for the R2D2 projector. A small pane of glass on a retractable antennae arm and a "Aiptek Mobile Cinema Pico Projector Q20", for example, on the news of Princess Lea is seen. Try that!
Bad ass!!
Nice, have you thought about using some ball wheels like these of the 914 PC-Bot, or even printing your own caster ? I'm still impressed about the ninjaflex drive belt. You should consider printing some cheap encoders for the wheels (with 2 light barriers) to synchronize the motors. I'm sure it will be difficult to drive straight forward without controlling.

***** Well you are right, I think about omni wheels for a long time but still can't find a good use and design that's practical usable. I also don't like the caster, they are a little bit unpredictable, need a lot of space...

***** What do you mean feel ever bump? When the wheel is moving forward it is like an ordinary wheel. So i assume you are talking about the sideways motion, which would only occur when it is turning. There are two ways these wheels will expedience a "bump." First would be when it it hopping up a a curb. The jolt that is created in dependent only on the material of the wheel(Softer=less jolt). It is not dependent on the diameter because both wheels would be making the same high change in the same amount of time. The only thing that is determined by diameter is the height of the curb you can roll over. Which would only be an issue if you had to hop a 1cm curb whilst turning simultaneously, which i doubt will be done often. The second source of "bump"s would come form uneven surfaces. Bit this is solely determined by the contact surface area between the wheel and the ground. Yes the castor has a higher contact surface area, but with omnis you can always stack additional omnis side by side to increase the contact surface area
loved the spinning around but why are the motors making that humming sound wail driving around?
You could have two separate wheels in the centre, which would allow it to spin. No motor needed.
Will you be incorporating the side to side motion that R2 exhibits when he is trying to get your attention? Love the progress btw.
For a future project, instead of doing all that tedious measuring, and risking getting it wrong, you could just make some sort of adjustable mount.
Do other r2 builders have emergency stop / kill switches fitted? And if so have you considered a way on yours?
So awesome, looking forward to seeing the 2 to 3 legs conversion controlled by the same controller as the feet to make it more independent looking. Sidenote, will you ever revisit Iron Man? It's been a while :P
When are you adding the astromech flight thrusters? Or is that not a feature on an R6 Droid.
When are adding a Vacuum attachment and autonomous room sensing? ;)
I think Next video you should insulate the motors
Is the conversion going to be faster when all the electronics are rigged-up, or would that put too much stress on the frame?
Yesssss
I think you should be moving the center foot with a belt rather than a studding, because as it is, is using a lot of revolutions and moving really slow. So, yeah, maybe a belt or a rack and pinion system. And if you're worried about rigidity there, you could put a smooth rod instead of the threaded one. That said, though, I think there could be an even better solution for that center foot, because you need only two stages, in and out.
Just a question. Have you thought of using NinjaFlex for the infill for the foot? That would allow the NinjaFlex to help absorb and dampen bumps and thumps on uneven ground. The thumps coming up through the foot can probably be severe.

And it will take out some of the plastic sound you can hear when the wheels hit a seam in the floor
When you let down the central leg it's making some noise.do you thing you can fix that?
The only thing i can see is that you may need to find a way to dull the extend and retracting noise
Will be easier to drive once you have the microcontroller interpreting the rc signal, rather than direct output to motors, you could use the right stick to go forwards (L+R forward), wheel turn (L+R forwards but one faster than other), spin (L forwards, R backwards or vice versa), reverse (L+R backwards) and wheel turn in reverse (similar to forward wheel turn but in reverse). The left stick is free to be used for other actions or left unused, however switches could use the left stick signals to activate special features, like conversion between 2-3 leg mode.

You can fiddle with the wheel turn increments to make the robot turn sharper, or make softer turns
Is it me, or the central leg motor sounds like it's struggling a bit? There are two points where it sounds like it's catching on something.
i want one :D
Every time you say "studding", Darth Vader kills an ewok.
What happens when this baby hits 88MPH? Coming out awesome! :D
What are the metal strips you're using? Where do you source those? :)

+James Bruton (XRobots) Ah, cool beans, thanks for the quick response :)
I am from oli b and i swar you ☺
Where you bought your batteries
I want to build an r2 but am not sure on the electronics could you help me on some questions?
My god that's loud.
***** do you think the Makerbot Replicator would be a good printer for beginners?
Will there be a Hulkbuster episode next? Not that I don't enjoy the R6 build.
dont you think that the sound will be a pain mabey you can somehow silence it a bit more but keep working love your vids
How much does it weigh so far?
I think you have good progress on the feet. But its a bit creepy to see a droid rolling around without a head. Id give the head some attention if i where you. But other than that, its looking pretty awesome.
@james Bruton how do you control direction ?

thank you james burton :)
Hi i am from oli b and i swor you at school with R5
Hi just to ask have you made a 3D printer from tatum
could you 3d print a 1/2 scale car with working v6 air engine? i´am just thinking about that, how it could be amazing.
When will you finish hulk buster
the third leg retracting and dropping is very slow and quite loud, positioning from 2 leg drive to 3 leg drive is slow but not as noisy would there be any motors in the price range that offer the speed while being muffled? Great work on the build by the way! Lovin it!
When is your next Hulkbuster video 27 being added. I got your message on patreon regarding this. I am having trouble accessing my messages on patreon. I think my samsung note 10 needs a wack off a wall. Question 1 - how many 3D Printers do you own now ? 2 - are you going to start another build after you finish hulkbuster ? 3- there is no third question as I dont like being greedy All good Thanks
