1:57:40 Kylo Ren is pausing on Rey because he's trying to connect with her and is willfully observing her rather than defeating her. He admires her abilities, his master ordered her alive to join them, and he genuinely wants her to join them. Someone else with the Force is the only thing that appeals to him besides his internal conflict and attempting to fully embrace the Dark Side. He respects her second to his Master in the film [excluding the dead: Darth Vader.] She also broke free of him once already and he wants to see what she does next instead of getting her back in a boring prison cell asap. His plan is to disarm her after he see's what she's capable of whilst she's fighting angrily against him. Then he's surprised and in injured-soldier-defense-mode once she taps in and The Force fights for her.

With the prequels they only pointed out flaws and not positives and with the original trilogy and The Force Awakens they're only bringing up the positives and ignoring the flaws. It really annoys me!

That's because most of the flaws in the OT are completely minor and can be overlooked. With the prequels, the flaws are always present, which makes it hard to overlook those flaws.

The near-wordless introduction to Rey (12:03-16:12) is when I fell in love with the film. Abrams has always been a competent action filmmaker, but I've never seen anything resembling artistry or nuance. That early scene is by far the best thing he's ever directed. Having an old school talent like Kasdan probably helped big time.

Abrams stepped up his game big time on this. A lot of the things that annoyed me about his past movies (tons camera movement, fast pans, lens flares everywhere, etc.) were either absent or utilized with restraint, and were much more effective because of it. He turned things that used to just be his bag of visual gimmicks into proper filmmaking tools. I remember watching Super 8 thinking "this guy is talented, but he doesn't know when to tone it down." He finally did that with TFA.

+OneFlaglessNote That's like saying that Into Darkness and Wrath Of Khan are the same film. They have a few similar plot points, but are still completely different. The dogfight and trench run in Star Wars is magnificent, but in TFA it's terrible. Star Wars is just a much better film. I respect your opinion, but had to throw in my two cents. I was 14 when I saw Revenge Of The Sith, and it took till I was 21 to quit drinking the kool aid. Though, I still never had the prequels above the original trilogy. I remember falling asleep in the theater, watching Attack Of The Clones when I was 11, then waking up during the arena battle. lol.

You guys should do this for R rated version of Batman V Superman.

+Nate Roelke no that's what people speculated but he said in the article that was the ashes of his dead enemies.

Most people forget that the only people that witnessed Vader's turn were Luke, Vader himself, and The Emperor. So it is quite possible that Snoke and Kylo didn't know that he turned and they just believed Luke killed him.

It's almost like Snoke purposely didn't complete Kylo's training to fuel Kylo's rage, and in a way force Kylo to do anything to reach a true Dark Side Status driving him to kill his father.

The only reason that comes to mind is that they are late with translation of the special features (bullshit) or because of some exclusivity contracts with American distributors. Either way, it sucks, and the only outcome is a higher piracy rate.

You guys mentioned that Rey's name was originally Kira in the script, but what if Rey ends up being a fake name to keep her hidden better and her real name ends up being Kira afterall?

1:12:18 'Minor Mistake'. Lightspeed, Lightyears, all different units. According to Abrams a halfway across the galaxy blast is visible in the same time as light takes to get from the moon or so. I'll use that next time I miscalculate something's speed by about 1,500,000,000,000 times.

Well the original death star actually moved and traveled to locations to blow them up. That makes way more sense than having a death star planet, do they have to wait for the planet to rotate the right direction to blow up a target? What happens when the sun in that system is drained from the weapon is that death star just useless? Wouldn't the star lose it's gravitational pull and the death star planet would just fly off into space? Did they blow up a useless sunless death star? Well I guess at least it was easy to do.

For those who want to link the commentary to the movie just check the time of this video and minus it by 1 minute and 14 seconds, that is the time in the movie itself to sync it. Works like a charm.

I have been excited for this all day. The minute I got home from work, it's Force Awakens time.

Seen the film 8 times now. 5 times at the theater, 3 at home.

If the commercials are throwing off your timing note that the video and movie have almost the same runtime. The difference is only a minute or two so you can easily get back in sync by setting your movie to the same time as this video minus a minute or two. The commercials don't increase the runtime.

+cforbes54 Just spring for KZread Red imo. KZreadrs get their money and you don't have to deal with ads. (There are also a whole bunch of other benefits, like additional app functionality, access to KZread music and Google Play and all of that. It's basically just a Spotify subscription except you also get rid of all ads on youtube).

Loved the commentary, but the ads threw me off a couple times. Still great!

All the criticisms that this movie had, from those that do have some ground to them to those that don't, none of had any meaningful impact on my apreciation of the movie, it is impossible for me to get bored watching this movie. And it's been fun watching it with you guys, hopefully Jesdi's commentary will come out soon.

4th time for me. Saw it 2 times in theatre and i got the bluray today, saw it first without this commentary and now ofcourse with.

Thank you all for taking us on the journey with you. Can't wait to watch it again. This will be my third.

Yeah I missed him. He was one of the biggest reasons I liked watching the other commentaries because he is so funny.

Not to mention in the official soundtrack for the movie, there is a track named "girl with the staff"

This was my 6th time seeing it, I saw it 4 times in theaters and once before watching this commentary!

just sat and watched the film with u guys. When I walked out of the midnight showing of the very first night I called TFA my favourite Star Wars movie, and it just got better. I've seen The Force Awakens more than 10 times and it gets better every time

I can see Rey constructing her own saber using her staff for some of the materials... but it seems like the staff isn't something she's had since she was little. She didn't get dropped off with it, and everyone else on Jakku has a staff

This was a wonderful commentary and I enjoyed it thoroughly! Force Awakens is a lovely film and I can't wait for the sequel!

This was my 9th viewing!

I swear I just love watching the joy on all of your faces as you watch this movie. Mine just arrived today and will watch with the kids over the next few days. We watched ROTJ on Sunday night.

I've seen the movie twice. Once at AMC Theater and a second at a 4D screening where the chairs shook and everything. It was awesome.

The force awakens is awesome!

Ben has been manipulated for god knows how long. Not saying it's acceptable what he did, but I think people need to look passed certain things.

+DTIII I think so too. People need to stop knee jerk reacting to this with "You killed my favorite character! Die!!!" because looking at this objectively, he's done nothing on par with anything Vader did before his redemption. And at the end when he's fighting Rey and offers her to join him I really get the sense that theres still good in him. Not only that but the novelization makes it clear that he's still battling the dark/light sides of the force even after Hans death, to the point that when Rey starts to get the upper hand in the fight it looks like the roles have reversed a bit. It looks like Kylo is beginning to touch the light again while Rey is beginning to touch the dark side. He can still be redeemed, and if people will stop letting their knee jerk reaction dominate their opinion they can see that
