I'm not sure George had a cohesive script when this went into production. The pod racing was fun I suppose, but I was an adult when this came out. Needless to say, I was EXTREMELY disappointed. I think there were elements here to create a more adult narrative - slavery, abandonment, loss of innocence, betrayal, (forces that made Anakin become a Sith later), but it was made for kids by an adult who was also trying to please adults and sell toys. You can see in all of these 'behind the scenes' videos that Lucas was surrounded by a crew who didn't have the nerve to question him - or they were just as naïve.

"IT'S WORKING, ITS WORKING" Dear lord how the casting director was allowed to keep working after this fiasco is a mystery itself

You can’t blame the cast for any of this. Lucas has always been terrible at writing dialogue.

Personally I think he encapsulated the charm of little boy Anakin. He was just a little kid who loved StarWars, playing a little kid who loved the StarWars universe

The problem with Phantom it was all visuals and absolutely no story no emotion's nothing , it was like watching a big budget commercial , it they only did that trailer in the cinema that would be enough I think, Star Wars was not really my thing so I'm watching this and I'm amazed how unprofessional all this was and how naive everyone was , my thoughts when I saw it was it after The Matrix ( with was my movie of the year ) and The Mummy (after no Indiana for so long me and my dad we were so delighted with all the fun we had in one week after the Matrix) I was like yyyyy what's the big deal and I was asking all my friends like why did you wanted me to watch this and they defend the movie so much , and me remember watching Empire as the first star wars movie and being surprised that even though I had no idea what was going on (because when u was a kid no one explain to me that I have to watch a movie called new hope I was only told watch star wars so I asked for star wars at HOLLYWOOD videos and I got empire) but I really appreciate and enjoyed the movie and I was amazed but this Dear lord .

Lol wtf are you talking about? No story? You clearly either didn’t pay attention to the film or didn’t care enough to discern the story. It’s extremely smart and serves the original trilogy very well.

Your complain here makes really no sense. Of cause its about visuals. George Lukas used the medium of film after all meaning a large chunk of the emotion, stakes, ton and world building has to be done using visuals. You can't just say "Tattooin is a bad place to life in" you needs tones of visual references in every corner of the scenes its placed in to make this clear even if no character ever directly states it. And the same is true for pretty much the whole movie. Both the Trade Federations ships and the Republic capital must look futuristic but the former most appear threatening while the latter somewhat save. And to make this work do they need to put a lot of effort into the visuals. The same issue is when you talk about no emotion which is just wrong its just that from the core cast of character only Jar Jar and Anakin don't hold a massiv reason to actively suppress there emotions. Padme has to present herself as the strong leader, Obi-Wan and Qul-gon as Jedi must appear to be in full control of there emotions. But Jar jar and Anakin are always open with there emotions jar jar because he is a foul and Anakin because he is a child. And this is shown no better than with Padme on Tattooin where she shows far more emotions than in the rest of the movie because due to not appearing as the Queen its the one time where she doesn't have to pretend to be someone that she is not. And this restrain in emotions for Padme and the Jedi has to be introduced here because Anakin's fall in the next 2 movies is highly dependent on it Its easier to connect with the Characters in the OT for most because there are a Princess that for a long time worked together with rebels and therefor adapted to here rough lifestyle, a smuggler that is already part of the criminal underworld and a Farmboy that was pushed into a struggle far larger then himself. For all of them it makes sense to act far more emotionally. But the Characters in the Prequels are predominantly characters that due to there place in life can't act out there emotions which is where most of the drama comes from in Episode 2 and 3. For episode 1 however is it the constant thread of Padme's believe in the republic crumbling and Qul-gon's defiance towards the Jedi counsel.

@@rynobehnke8289 I 100% agree with you, just here to illuminate the best typo I've ever seen. Describing Jar Jar as a "foul" is ridiculously hilarious
