The score for Star Wars is a massively iconic score that screams action and adventure in the cold darkness of space in a galaxy far, far, far away. Looking back, it harkens back to the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers serials with the heavy orchestral cues along with the credits crawl. I have heard the soundtrack, and many renditions that were fair but varied on pace and instrumentation. John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra are THE REAL DEAL. I remember watching Evening At Pops when John was conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. The guest conductor was C-3PO accompanied by R-2D2. I think actors Anthony Daniels and Kenny Barker were playing their iconic roles in the episode.

And how much did you take from The Planet Suite?
@_soundthoughts
6 ай бұрын
The resemblances to The Planets (as well as Stravinsky's Rite of Spring) are because George Lucas used that music for the temp tracks as he was storyboarding the film (his "space opera"). Temp tracks are common practice in commercial filmmaking, with composers often being instructed to emulate that music as closely as possible without infringing copyright. There are instances in which John Williams was original as a composer, but Star Wars Episode IV is, on the whole, not one of those. In his composing of the score to A New Hope, Williams did what he was hired to do (stay close to the temp music).
@wtk6069 Жыл бұрын
After the famous fanfare, the rest of the theme is very influenced by Tchaikovsky, most especially his Slavish March. Parts of it sound very similar, just made to sound less Russian.

Steven Spielberg is working on a documentary about JW if I remember correctly
Modern historys beethoven
funny because its a perfect 4th interval not a perfect 5th as he describes

True, and it resolves into a fifth. Perhaps that's what JW meant.
That explains why Luke’s theme doesn’t really show up much in the first movie, but is all over the sequels.
Something worth seeing on CNN! Two scoops in one video!
JW on the SW theme: kzread.infoHr0MCj4IFPM?si=9JIScw_Xabm3748n
He borrowed a just little tiny bit from Gustav Holst….
Guys, he just copied from Korngold's _"King Row"_
And here I thought he found the score on a chair in his office. Obviously, I need to spend less time looking at LiveCam videos of the Boston skyline….
He lifted it directly from Korngold's score for King's Row. It's sad to see him pretending that he had an original idea here. Go listen to the Korngold if you don't know.
I adore John Williams, but he borrowed heavily from Holtz’s The Planets. They are practically identical. But if he hadn’t Star Wars would not have had the same impact. He really is a genius.

Also the King’s Row theme, though that one wasn’t even 50 years old at the time SW was made.

Exactly how I feel about it. The planets is so good
Mars the bringer of war Gustav Holst
There's a reason that most of "his" songs sound so familiar: most of them are plagiarized from others. 😒
Does he have perfect pitch because when he tried to explain the notes he was in the correct pitch
Greatest modern composer (perhaps greatest composer ever). Still the beginning of this theme is HIGHLY “influenced” by the theme from Kings Row. He definitely copied it and improved it 10x over. Glad he did.
Scored this record at a thrift store years ago. They are cheap on Discogs
But most of it was nicked n slightly altered from ‘The Planets”
And how much did you take from The Planet Suite?

The resemblances to The Planets (as well as Stravinsky's Rite of Spring) are because George Lucas used that music for the temp tracks as he was storyboarding the film (his "space opera"). Temp tracks are common practice in commercial filmmaking, with composers often being instructed to emulate that music as closely as possible without infringing copyright. There are instances in which John Williams was original as a composer, but Star Wars Episode IV is, on the whole, not one of those. In his composing of the score to A New Hope, Williams did what he was hired to do (stay close to the temp music).
After the famous fanfare, the rest of the theme is very influenced by Tchaikovsky, most especially his Slavish March. Parts of it sound very similar, just made to sound less Russian.

I thought the star wars theme tune was a copy
Even John Williams thinks in means of moveable-do solfege, and yet this method is so rarely taught in modern musical education resources!! Why??

Having perfect pitch, I just use the actual note names.
every knowledge musician knows he plagiarized it from Holts " the Planets ".. Yeah... he is a great musician but give credits to the one who created that music before you did.

Who are those musicians that are so knowledgeable that they missed the fact that basically every film composer worth his salt has ripped off Holst at some point in time? Starting with Max Steiners King Kong.

George Lucas temped other scenes in A New Hope with excerpts from The Planets but not the Title Crawl. The Title Crawl's musical direction comes from the Korngold's opening theme for King's Row.

Copied the Superman theme lol

You mean he copied that theme for it or he copied the Superman theme he made from something else.
I'm just surprised CNN covered something without an agenda.

The agenda here is John Williams hagiography. Take a listen to Korngold's main theme for King's Row 👀

He’s a Hollywood icon (of the past), of course they had an agenda.
Love John Williams, but he stole almost everything from Gustav Holst. Listen to The Planets.

Not this though, this was Korngold.
He nicked it from a older song 🤣
Only good thing CNN's put out in years.
