I always thought that Troy's reaction to Data's laughter was her sensing emotion from him. Verifying that he was having a real feeling.

I think Picard was willing to accept Q as an entity. He recognised him as a potential threat but also a curiosity. That is until Q Who. 15 crew members died directly due to his actions. Now Picard recognises that that is Q doing them "a favour" by letting them encounter the Borg and shake them out of complacency. But at the same time those crew members wouldn't have died without him. I think that's the core reason for the crew's additional hostility toward him from this episode onwards until Tapestry when Picard seems to reach more of an understanding with him.

"This is really getting on my nerves, now that I have them!" - Q Hilarious episode! I shamelessly channeled Data's laughing into a fanfiction story, where my android main character burst into spontaneous laughter over the sheer absurdity of the situation he was in. "It was a wonderful feeling."

whoever wrote that question from Geordie "Why are you laughing, Data?" Should have been fired on the spot just for suggesting it. What a terrible way to ruin the moment. And why would Geordie even wonder about it? Q literally just said he's going to give Data a going away present, isn't it obvious why Data is laughing? Edit: good to see I wasn't the only one who thought that was a horrible moment.

I assumed the drab outfit was meant to show his human life being terrible on him. It functions, it does the job of being clothing/a life, but for Q it is nothing but ugly and bland. And him back in a Starfleet uniform is meant to show color and flare is back. I thought it was obvious but it works, since the Starfleet life is so amazing to us watching it it would be hard to show that it could be boring. Unless you are basically a god.

I agree with your points and talking of extended universe must recommend the Q trilogy of novels which introduces us to the monster and threat to the Galaxy that is 0! You'll find out who the calamarain are & more important were when Q encountered them. Yes it's plural by the way . Important contrast to the point the Enterprise raises when explaining why they protected Q and they respond in the negative with chaos plural not singular! They refuse to see the distinction b/w the cruelty directed by 0 from Q who didn't stop him. The best type of novel that weaves together separate threads from earlier shows to weave them together. Including hiw exactly the T'Kon empire was caught by surprise and destroyed by supernova when they had created the solar transporter to remove the dying star and replace it with another. They nearly did but for outside interference. No spoilers read Q space, Q Strike and Q Zone ( don't remember the order) for this. Includes tying together day of the dove, and the children shall lead as well as ST5 the movie into the plot. Later on while novels after Nemesis were considered cannon the novel Q & A covers exactly why Q ( our Q) had such interest in humanity in general and Picard in specific. Let's just say Q believed they are THE ONE! The one what you'll find out after reading the novel. BTW this also explains why the temporal violations made by Admiral Janeway were tolerated by the Temporal agencies uptime and why they ordered the DTI to not go after Janeway for violating the Temporal prime directive. In the series it's explained how in most time lines its by a narrow margin that the majority of universes has either the Borg in control of the Galaxy or removed as a threat. Events had to happen pre destination paradox for humanity and Picard to be where they were when they were on the day they absolutely had to be there lest it be the Borg who get there then and all is lost. This loving care of the books, makes me love this series even more. Merry Christmas LR.

I feel like one of the problems later Trek has is that the writers increasingly point to the lack of continuity as an excuse for more lack of continuity. Continuity has never been good in Trek so why start now? It's the lazy mentality, "This room is a mess. Let's throw all our garbage in here!" The scripts increasingly feel like first drafts where there is a poorly thought out premise that exists to set up a single scene or line of dialog, and then everything around that is highly formulaic. Technobabble is a symptom of this.

Q explained it. It was a large gravitational body crossing near to the solar system at a 90° plane to the moon pulling it through subspace. This is where Q gives the suggestion to "change the gravitational constant of the universe". So yah, the b plot issue was explained.

The biological components of Data solve a number of plot holes, not least of which is his intimacy with Tasha all the way back in The Naked Now. It's not like that experience *couldn't* work if he was nothing but plastic and metal, but it certainly makes *more* sense that she'd want such a thing, if he has some amount of organic material on and in his physical form.

YEah the Continuum setting it up makes sense. How else would the Calamarain know where to look for Q and even know they could capture Q. John De Lancie does great job of making Q so large, with little scene time on the TNG in general.

I don’t think Geordi’s being dumb, I think he made an incorrect assumption. I think he was under the impression Q told him the funniest joke in existence and let him laugh naturally, and wanted to hear it as well. Hence why he asked “What is so funny?” not “Why are you laughing?”.

Q when trying to help in Engineering explains what most likely caused the moon to fall from orbit. He theorises the most likely cause was the passing of a black hole at the edge of the system. I'm inclined to believe him honestly as I doubt it was a test by the Continuum. They seemed truly shocked by Q's self sacrifice/suicide as if "Well this is happening. Holy crap!"

When it comes to Geordi's comment of "He's mot worth it", I don't see that this contradicts his character as in The Enemy he is negotiating with the Romulan for mutual benefit and giving a stranger the chance to prove he isn't completely dogmatic and violent. From what he has already experienced of Q, it isn't necessarily out of character for him to write him off since he already knows what to expect of him, or at least believes he does.

Time lords. Doctor who. All the power in the universe to make sure nothing happens. The moon was pushed out of orbit by a large object passing by at near right angles, according to Q himself. Bored human Q, talking to Geordi. Change the gravitational constant of the universe. Took place in main engineering.

  • @nickokona6849

I think Hide and Q, Deja Q, and Tapestry are the most honest portrayals of Qs character. The Q clearly have a fascination, reverence, or concern regarding how far humans will evolve. Beyond even them. Who knows if the Q have ever encountered anything beyond themselves. Q wants humanity to continue to grow. Not be babied. They either see how by specific prodding they can influence humans, either to help, or ensure q dominance over what we might become. Kraia said it well. True power is knowing how to strike the fractured mass so the ripples end up where you want them. Sounds like the Q to me. Work has his best line ever in this episode. Love the interaction.

  • @sutterkain8215
    @sutterkain82153 жыл бұрын

Actually they do explain what happened to the moon. Q explains that it is obviously the result of a large mass passing by the moon at a right angle. Don't know if that is scientifically correct but that is how Q explained why the moon is out of orbit. Not sure if you will read this since it is an old video but figured I'd still try

  • @harpercole5321

I feel like Q's role as an advocate of humanity starts here. One could make an argument for "Q Who", but the Borg encounter seemed more motivated by wanting to prove his superiority. I like that Captain becomes his preferred uniform rank as the series goes on. From making himself an Admiral or Marshall in the early episodes, he's now only presenting himself as Picard's equal - a nice touch! It seems like the other Q had to be responsible for the Calamarain showing up, as they could hardly have heard about Q's new mortal status otherwise. The idea that they also sabotaged the moon hadn't occured to me, but it does seem to fit. I understand that this was originally going be a the story of Q faking his mortality, but Gene Roddenberry suggested that it be real. His last ever direct contribution to a Star Trek episode, perhaps? It's a favourite of mine, the comedic elements really land.

m*δv represents the change in linear momentum, and m*δv*r is the change in angular momentum, where m = mass of object and r = radius of rotation, and δv is the change in velocity (Uppercase delta more commonly used, but I couldn't find the alt keyboard code)

I get the ugly outfit was just a bit of petty revenge from the crew. I could see someone quietly ordering "Give him something the complete opposite of flamboyant to wear." When it comes to ageing, I always head-canon'd it as Data occasionally just resculpting his appearance subtly over time to fit in with humanity better eventually culminating in the skunk stripe he had in the future in All Good Things. A sign that that version of Data knew being ageless would be slightly offputting to anyone he spent any significant time around, but not understanding it completely so he made himself look slightly ridiculous.

Yes, Q has positive qualities, but... them going out of their way to not accept him - firstly, I think they are trying to give him a bit of lesson about accountability and consequences. And secondly, of course they would use the opportunity to basically toy with him in a similar way he toys with them, because now they have basically somewhat similar power over him - they know and control things that are completely alien to him (pain, hunger, sleep...)

I agree on the 'sleep being scary' thing. If you think of an infant (or a very young child), what is standard? Diapers (cannot understand/control the body's signals for the excretion process), and resistance to sleep. In fact, I remember some 90's comedian making the off joke about some very young kids crying when told it is 'bedtime'. "Do you remember when you were so young you DIDN'T want to go to sleep?" LOL Why? Because falling asleep IS horrifying. (we just get used to is) Also, I think his official designation IS "Q2". At least I saw that in the Star Trek Card game. So, no biggie. I too noted Troi's reaction to Data laughing. It was one of the best parts, in my opinion. I feel it (/want it to be) on purpose. That she was sensing waves of joy & happiness radiating from Data & was reacting reflexively to it. (i.e. laughter is infectious, for a Betazoid more so) So it really was a "feeling", and not some circuit adjustment (or whatever) that emulated laughter. Merry Christmas Lorerunner.

That Diablo 3 reference is real good stuff, the character dialog is the best part of that mess's writing, the expansion has way more of it, there are a ton of memorable background stories, specially in the expansion, such as the selfish husband and his wife or the continuation of the blacksmith's story where he gets an apprentice.

Also I strongly disagree with Q being their enemy. Or, to be more precise, I don't think they ever actually considered him an enemy. To me it seemed clear that they consider him as a child with a gun - rowdy, spoiled, reckless, and dangerous since he's got a gun, but... not an actual enemy. Just a dangerous trickster element which tends to complicate stuff immensely. Oh and also, in my opinion that's what he really is, in screenwriter's intention, as well as in-world, that's his character.

I'm also willing to not consider things in season's 1 and 2 cannon if something better contradicts it later. I like that we get more Q and Guinan, but still there never is a payoff and this is the last we see of it. I thought it was corny how the scientist on the planet described the devastation that would occur when the moon impacted. I think a starship crew can figure out the effects of failure. Did they get the clothes for Q from the replicator in Picard's ready room? Does Data remember the laugh with the same emotion years later? When he gets the emotion chip, how does the memory of the laugh compare/stand up?

Add a weak b story about Romukals taking Data's remaining components and reverse engineering robots based on Data's body and partial neural net. Army of robots. Anyways Soong gives up his android body and implants Data's memories. Data returns to star fleet for a while but decided he was finished. IMO, Q ALWAYS talks and ...steers the situation by that, by talking. His powers... it always felt to me like he used them as an... additional layer to the talking? The way people use gestures/body language, basically. So to me, him trying to talk himself out, or steer the situation by talking, that's not new. What's new is that he's kinda terrified because he's lost his "body language" to go with that talk.

Geordi's reaction to Data laughing always bugged me too. It actually made me even angry. Not just because of the stupidity of the question but also because of its (unintended) rudeness. Now Geordi is the least funny one of all main characters. I mean intentionally funny. I can honestly remember only one instance when he made a humorous comment, and thats the "My hero" when Data got his fingers trapped in that chinese finger trap. He simply doesn't have much of a sense of humor. And as we are shown in numerous episodes he also lacks other social skills which all put together makes it very difficult for him to get a girlfriend... or to have many friends for that matter. Well, apart from Data, who doesn't have emotions and with whom Geordi gets along best. And thats the problem in this scene. Geordi both really doesn't understand why or at what is Data laughing AND he also DOESN'T LIKE IT. This is a departure from his reliable emotionless friend Data and he doesn't want that. Thats what I meant by the rudeness, both the partypooping quality of his question (if I am not laughing, noone is; that question was meant to stop that "nonsense" and it did) and the selfishness of it, because he is thinking more of himself and his status quo rather than of what Data may be experiencing (and who knows, maybe liking it). Troi understands this and goes along with it (I think that shot was intended and that it is what Sirtis was supposed to do, because Troi had similar shots of smiling understandingly at the present situation in other episodes, Menage a Troi for example), Riker understands it and smiles, Piccard perhaps understands it at least on the intelectual level and is wise enough to not interrupt this unique experience and Worf dismisses this as inappropriate but as usual his protest is a stoically passive one. Even more ironic is that Geordi, for all the social grace he lacks, shows very little patience with Data (or anyone else) when the other person doesn't understand or mishandles some social concept, which Geordi DOES understand. For example when Data in season 1 took some metaphore literally and was confused by it, Geordi tells him that it is a metaphore in such tone and with particular choice of words (starting with adresssing him by name) that it came out as a mixt of contempt, incredulity, impatience and mild anger.
