I always found the idea of Q to be absolutely fascinating. Some of the dialogue at the beginning of the episode was really poor in my opinion, but the Q plot as a concept is awesome. Love the chemistry over the course of the series that builds between Q and Picard.

Q is especially fascinating if you hang on to the end with "All Good things". I've never been so satisfied with a series finale of any series ever. Those two episodes could have been a major motion picture.

I always really loved season 1 and all the early episodes. I always loved the feel of being there in the moment with the characters in the environment. It just had that mystical, adventurous, random exploration feel to it that only could be achieved with Roddenberry's touch. I tend to get a lot of joy out of the interaction and dialogue between the characters as they faced adventures and unknown situations together. Seeing them react to the situations they were presented with on an individual level was always part of the fun. It was done in such a way with that perfect late 80s/early 90s aura that jut can't be replaced easily. I think many people tend to base their opinions of the early episodes around simply the main story arc and none of the good small stuff in between that was taken for granted during the initial release of these episodes. We certainly can look back today with the junk that passes for sci-fi and Trek in current day to see just how much we took it for granted. I would do anything to have trek like this from the Berman era back on TV now.

John De Lancie started his career in the 1980s for about 4 years , on Daytime Soap Opera Days of Our Lives playing an ‘important’ secondary character named Eugene Bradford who ended up being Best friends with Marlena Evans, psychiatrist and ‘star of the show’ for many decades. They were so close she gave her (twin) daughter his name - Samantha Jean Brady. (Samantha was Marlena’s twin sister). Just an FYI.☮️🖖thanks for your analysis

Funny about Patrick Stewart's hair, since I still remember living in Miami when TNG first came out, and I remember a commercial in which locals were shaving their heads to look like Picard. He was that memorable even back in 1987.

I always figured that the federation one day became the Q, and were so advanced that they just intermixed into the race of “human” despite Terrans not being the majority. I guessed that the Q were always beating on the Federation to keep themselves in existence, and maybe even advance themselves through past meddling. Final thing: I have one argument on your idea that the Q wiped out the Quadrant. I always saw “All Good Things...” as being Q saving them, and that in the “normal” timeline, where he didn’t, everything in the future took place as it did because of the irromodic syndrome making Picard insane, but since only the D of the future tried to close the anomaly, it didn’t work, so Q gave Picard a chance.

Arch, I'm big on hating Season 1 of TNG, and in some ways, on criticizing GR. But your lead-in during the first half an hour, going into production difficulties, studio stuff, and Gene's situation, has given me serious things to think about. Frankly, it accords with my own perspective of early TNG suffering badly from [jutting our chins out with our jumpsuited superiority] syndrome, but the why, the context, and frankly, a lot more sympathy for it, that was helped by your information and speculations. And it goes with a larger re-evaluation of, well. Of humanist ideas like GR had. And seeing our modern, more cynical, lack of such ideas. I mean, like, I've heard that's a big deal of Discovery, a lack of that idea of Humanist Vision. Andromeda was a mess, in part, due to that permanently above-it-all, meta, postmodernist, take-nothing-seriously, too-cool-to-care theme and its complete lack of Humanism. On the heels of Mass Effect, a series which was full of it ,both for actual humans, and for all humanoids as a whole. Would I rather have a technically better-hanging-together series devoid of that vision and heart, or something like early TNG, which had a clear vision, but was a burning mound of trash that some quality manages to escape from? I wish I had an easy answer to that.

Ugh, I hate to do it but I'm going to be an apologist for "mystery" of Far Point Station. While seemingly stupid, it is actually quite deep. Think about this: How would the Klingons have treated that trapped creature once they discovered it? How about the Cardassians? Or the Romulans? Or the Ferengi? Or the Chalna, or even someone like the Myzerians, or the Pakleds? Figuring out the Bandi have enslaved this poor creature is easy. The real test is to see how they treat the creature once they discover it. Why this seems like such an underwhelming test is precisely because the humans SO EASILY passed the real test that they didn't even notice it was a test. The real test was the temptation of what to do with the creature. Of course they let the poor creature go without thought or hesitation and reject the Bandi for having done it. To the humans the choice was in fact ridiculously easy. THAT is what so impressed Q about humans, and Picard in particular. And it's because of this Q decided that humanity was in fact worth saving.

Personal Top 10 Season 1 Episodes: 1. Datalore (Great, mysterious story) 2. The Neutral Zone (feels a lot more like Season 2 or even 3 already) 3. Home Soil (Nice life concept/ Good Data action) 4. Arsenal of Freedom (Sort of a forerunner to Contagion, action-wise) 5. The Big Goodbye (This one established the Holodeck as plot device. Nice humour, too) 6. Haven (I just loved Lwaxana Trois behaviour) 7. The Battle (For the Stargazer, mainly) 8. 11001001 (Bynars and a nice Character Episode) 9. Where No One Has Gone Before (Funny Concept. Unfortunately, the Traveller wasn't developed further in future episodes) 10. Coming of Age (not for the Wesley parts, but the great build-up for Conspiracy (which they fumbled up imho!)

The Q plot all the way. It even makes the Farpoint encounter look like he is pulling the strings before the gradual reveal. It makes the story better. I also like the way Picard is fighting to construct an argument when Q is abusing his possition as Judge and Picard has to protect his crew as well as stop humanity being found guilty by Q the character is desperate thinking on his feet. The way Patrick Stewart delivers the struggle before he makes his argument is excellent. I love that part of the Episode.

I think the first two seasons in general were more dynamic in some ways. The later seasons of TNG saw the Enterprise doing more diplomatic work than actual exploring. They were more “procedural” than they were about “wonder”. First season episodes like “where no one has gone before” would never have even been considered in later seasons because the tone of the show had shifted so much. Try watching a first season or second season episode and then watch an episode from season six or seven. It doesn’t really feel like you’re watching the same show in some ways. Yes, the characters and ship are the same, but in a tonal sense (filming, lighting, and especially musically), the series was completely different.

The original Mary Sue actually dates back to the 70's, if you can believe it. It was a Star Trek fanfiction character though, fittingly enough. So it's actually more likely Wesley was inspired by Mary Sue, maybe to try fill a popular niche/fantasy the fanbase was displaying already. People always forget or try make out it's a thing people made up recently to critique Star Wars or rooted in misogyny. But it was just a funny dumb fanfic people laughed at.

Sorry--I keep finding things to comment about! Remember how iconic "its five-year mission" was? And then the first thing we hear with this new Trek is "its continuing mission" in a British accent! That was an "oooooh!" moment. AND "to boldly go where no ONE has gone before." Set the new standard from the start. The men in miniskirts might have been a bit much, but looking back you can see they were trying. And omg--who designed the new Enterprise? Because that first shot of the ship was another "oooooh," moment. And at my first glance, i thought Riker looked a lot like Kirk. Now i can't imagine how I thought that. There's a cursory similarity--at the time I just thought he was meant to seem familiar.

The disgruntled, sarcastic agent of the Continuum interpretation of Q continues to work even at the end. Corbin Bernsen and Suzie Plakson and all the other Q were probably originally saying "all humans ever do is fear the unknown, hate what's different, and try to destroy what they can't control". So at the end, with the other Q invisibly looking over his shoulder, he's like "look! It's something unknown, don't you fear it? You're supposed to hate those different things you know! Quick, destroy that thing before you lose your chance to control it!" Just aggressively making fun of the superiors he chafes under, demonstrating rather vindictively how wrong they were.

Head cannon activate: The Bandi homeworld is Deneb IV. The Bandi were a pre-technological people who were exposed to their local interstellar community by the Tarellians (of the episode Haven). Bandi society quickly adapted to Tarellian Trade and they became merchants and traders, and loss their skills as farmers and craftsmen. Like many species in the area the Bandi were exposed to the Tarellian plague. Bandi planetary leadership was slow and indecisive to act and the plague ravaged the Bandi people, until the leadership had to make the hard choice and exterminate a chunk of their own population. With the loss in cultural knowledge, population and loss of trade the Bandi have been reduced to planetary poverty. The Bandi as a people are well aware of their weakness and how dire their situation. They are afraid of planetary starvation, as well as aggressive aliens that may want to take advantage of their weakness. The Bandi have been open to finding interstellar trade partners, yet they have little to offer that is valued in their Sector.

Measure of a Man of course was pretty good. Q Who was pretty decent too.

Something worth mentioning here that clearly differentiates TNG from TOS right away: In TOS, the default when they arrive in a new location is for Kirk to beam down with his team. In TNG, it's far more likely that Riker will lead the away team, leaving Picard to pace around on the bridge. In "Encounter at Farpoint", Picard leaves the Enterprise only once, to have a brief chat with Zorn in his office. That plus his conversation with Riker make it clear that Starfleet now has a doctrine of considering their captains valuable enough to try to keep them out of harm's way, something that wasn't true back in TOS. That's not to say Picard won't risk himself, but just like a modern army tries to avoid having their colonels and generals in the trenches, Starfleet is also protecting its senior officers.

Maybe it's because I dont have expectations for what is to come? But yeah, I liked how calm it is, never seen such a peaceful feeling show that still had thrills and adventure. If that was Roddenberry's influence, he seems alright to me.

That struggle in the writer's room about the Q plot is funny. I can see, why it was from a TOS mind set perspective, though to be honest. But that's just the thing. For The Next Generation it would've been really weak on it's own. At least for kicking off the show. The fact that mankind as a whole was on trial by the Q was brilliant and also a perfect bridge from TOS to TNG on that regard. And it set the tone of the whole show. Plus it actually gave meaning to the Farpoint plot, but of course, since we know it was a trial, we all had to get back to Q in our minds. Huge save for the premiere, imho.

Going through the series for the ??th time (20?) and through the lore runs for the 2nd! 🖖🏼 I saw it on its first run too, at 35 years ago now! It’s never left my consciousness. My enjoyment of the 1st episodes has varied but that’s normal. In fact it’s not only expected, it shows how as a wise person ages, their appreciation of art changes as they accumulate experience, like The Doctor. Indeed Farpoint went from wow! to hokey as compared to the rest of the series (like watching S6 whilst also seeing reruns of S1). Example: Troi’s reactions. As a kid goes wow!, a young man gets cynical. Now in my 50s I’ve become an old softie and I find Troi’s reactions adorable and heartfelt and the wow! factor has returned. 🚩Wesley: I’ve always appreciated the character and admired the actor. (Especially since we were born on the same date!) I think those who dislike the character do so because either 1) it hits too close to home and they’re ashamed of comparison, or 2) in real life they treat “nerds” with scorn and derision too. Wesley hits close to home for me but that ingratiates him. He’s my even smarter little brother I’d love to geek out with. Those who mock innocent, joyful enthusiasm are sad and dull. But unfortunately he was badly written and badly treated. 🔸Nitpick: “class of ‘78”. I theorize that they originally were going to set the year as 2387, but for some reason revised it to 2364, as established in “The Neutral Zone.” Reason: McCoy’s age.

I think part of the problem of early TNG was they made the cast too big, but advertised them all as main characters. They had too many characters to properly give them all focus, which resulted in about half the cast feeling like glorified extras. TOS had three main characters, and a rotation of others that filled other roles. Sure, some of them became what amounted to main characters later on, but they started out being more akin to "Guy on bridge pressing buttons". Losing Yar, while generally a bad situation, allowed them to give more focus to other characters. Moving Geordi to engineering helped give him an actual purpose in the show, and moving Worf to Yar's job did the same. At the start of the series, it felt like Data, Worf, and Geordi could have all been replaced with a single character due to them all just being three variations of "Guy on bridge pressing buttons" and later on they even added Wesley as a fourth... That's not even getting into the whole "Chief Engineer" situation before Geordi was sent down there to actually become a character. Even after the reshuffling, several characters suffered from lack of focus. Crusher felt like her role was "Wesley's mother" than ship's doctor a lot of the time and Troi was relegated to stating the obvious/being a love interest for other characters for much of the series. The only reason most of the TNG cast are even remembered was because the series lasted long enough to figure out where to properly use their characters and give them a bit of focus here and there.

I watched Star Trek TNG in no particular order starting at age 6, and I had a deep, unreasonable adoration for the show, so I don't have really any negative memories of TNG. Even now, having watched it all again, I'm inclined to see the good parts more than the bad because they're the parts I remember. I don't see season one as crap, but I do acknowledge that it isn't as good as the rest. The bottom line though is that I enjoy watching it, so it's at least fine.

Have you heard of or read the TNG book Q-Squared by Peter David? If you haven't, it does explore the idea if Trelane being a young Q, and Q being assigned as his babysitter. I read it ages ago, spotted it at the library in passing.

I suspect that the judgement was on everything that's humanoid, rather than humans. I suspect that the Q looked at the Federation, and went "well you're a pretty representative sample" and let Q himself pick whomsoever he'd wish to be on trial (they don't have to worry about how long he takes to choose), and so he finally chooses Picard, as a representative. The other possibility I'd present, and this is entirely speculation, is that the Q are acting a little like the Ancients from SG1 - they have looked at what the humanoid races might one day become (Q-like), and are constantly watching to make sure that if they do one day evolve to that level, that they're not going to go around breaking everything.

Q plot makes the episode quite epic. Humanity is on trial for dare venturing beyond their barbaric realms. And literally there is no one better to argue humanity's case other than Picard.

From what I understand, taking both trek lore and real life science into account, it would be possible for the saucer section to meet the stardrive section if...and I stress if...a few conditions occur. As was stated, the ship was pushing almost warp 10 (9.8...9.9, something like that) and as far as I remember they were still there when saucer separation occurred. The following is speculation: if the relief crew had made use of the ship's then current velocity and fired acceleration thrusters sparingly, if velocity remained constant up to the saucer docking sequence and if the coordinates were programmed into the ship's navigation system...you could, in theory, have the saucer meet the stardrive again at Farpoint Station.

Awesome OP :D There are, shockingly, some good season 1 episodes out there. The ones I remember enjoying are Hide and Q, Datalore, Coming of Age (despite Wesley), Heart of Glory and Conspiracy. Conspiracy I consider a personal favourite of mine just because it dared to do something completely different and had amazing special effects for late 80's TV. Skin on Evil I kinda like as a guilty pleasure.

Not the best start, but not bad either. Certainly throwing Q out there and basically putting humanity on trial did add some stakes to the first adventure for this crew. They got the ensemble introduced effectively and even got to show off some of the cool aspects for this version of the Enterprise right away.

I kinda have to say, as much as this is not exactly how you wanna start off a show, I ADORE the first half of the episode with the Q trial. Makes me wish Q testing the crew as an extension of this "I'm gonna check how you've changed as a society" concept was like every other episode of at least the first season.

I actually hated Q in this episode. If they didnt follow up Q with Q Who, Tapestry and All Good Things, I wouldve preferred the Farpoint plot. In hindsight, the Q plot is better because later Q episodes were fantastic.

Until the day I die, I will claim. Wesley would be, at least accepted if there were another kid, equally intelligent, that could be his friend. Nog helped Jake be universally liked among DS9 fans, because he/they were real. Wealey needed a friend. Also adding another smart kid would take some of the, odd jealousy hatred, that Wesley gets.

My best understanding of the awkwardness of characterization for both Troi and Yar is because the actors were originally cast oppositely, but then Roddenberry decided what role he was going to write for Majel, so the woman who could pass as her daughter got shoehorned into that role. With a great deal of vagueness as to how much of the characterizations should be attached to the character vs how much to the actor. Such is my understanding.

What I think about the behaviour of Q is that he behaves badly to provoke a reaction from Picard which requires Picard to be at his absolute best. Q is aware that Picard holds no power in the conversation he simply wants to see how far Picard can stretch own capabilites to match his own ideals. If the Captain of the flag ship of the Federation is espouting values of the Federation then he wants to verify that this person is above reproach and sets the example they preach. Q is verifying the mental evolution and moral self discipline of spacefaring Federationalist.

To answer your question the things that jump to mind when thinking of season 1 of TNG are indeed Encounter at Farpoint, The Naked Now, Code of Honor, The Last Outpost, Justice and Skin of Evil. I don't typically go back and rewatch season 1. However I'm gonna try to watch these along with you. So hopefully my opinion of season 1 will improve. To answer your other question the Q plot is FAR more interesting. The Farpoint plot is beyond boring and disinteresting. It feels like a bad TOS episode with a new cast of extremely awkward characters in place of Kirk and crew. One other thing someone actually very recently seriously asked me "Kirk or Picard?" I have a favorite between the two... But that doesn't mean the other is a worse Captain. What a weird question. My favorite between them would be Picard. I told the girl who asked me "Picard but actually Sisko." I don't think she knew who Sisko was... But yeah it's a weird question they're totally different characters I'm not gonna sit there and debate who's the better Captain. Both have strengths and weaknesses in different areas. Anyway I enjoyed the rumination. I love hearing other people's thoughts and opinions. It's interesting to get a fresh perspective.

When I think of Season 1 today I mainly think of the awkward acting compared to later seasons. Episode quality may not be the best but when I first watched it as a kid I obviously loved it and it still holds that sentimental value that you have for such things. Worst episode is the one with the black guys that capture Tasha, best episodes are Datalore and Conspiracy. Kudos to Roddenberry for writing the Q character. By far the more interesting plot of the episode and one of the best characters in TNG. It was very interesting to hear that whole behind the scenes part. Thanks for sharing. My love of Star Trek has really been rekindled lately. Such a huge part of my childhood and youth. Not that I ever lost that love but until recently I considered the ST franchise to have ended with Enterprise. Anyway, I very much look forward to reliving TNG once more with you.

Point of order, from the Holodeck apologist in the back: The nitpick in question, the seeming contradiction that when Wesley left the holodeck he was wet, and that a snowball flew of the deck seems to contradict what we later see when the two characters step off the holodeck and de-rezz. Sorry people, this IS NOT a contradiction. My evidence: The two mobsters stepped off the holodeck and still had a good about 15 seconds, enough to utter a few sentences, before they began to de-rezz. Go back and watch the scene, Wesley is bone dry in the next scene and there is no water left from the snowball impact. So there is no contradiction, 15 seconds is plenty of time for a snowball to hit someone in the face.

    - I prefer the Q story now, but that might be because of what Q became ... I can't remember which one gripped me more at the time. - In terms of the Q's fascination with humanity, I think Q says in the next episode that they believe humans have the potential to become greater than the continuum. I guess we'll get to that in a few months. - What do I think of when I think of S1? It's the Wesley season to me (his role reduces pretty rapidly after this). Also an impression of awkwardness and naivety, but a sense of wonder that I find charming. For all its flaws, I'm glad we had this, rather than just seven seasons of the more polished TNG from S3 onwards. More variety this way. - I've heard that there were troubles behind the scenes, but don't know many of the details. I look forward to your thoughts on those. - Nice work! This is going to brighten up my Mondays for the next three years or so ...
