    It’s too bad Andy Dick is in irredeemably bastard in real life and is mostly likely responsible for getting Phil Hartman’s wife addicted to hard drugs again, causing her to murder him in cold blood with a gun. I’m glad the son a bitch was cancelled for sleeping around and just being a completely unreliable drug addict of an actor that most studios were just looking for a good excuse to stop hiring.

    In terms of funniest episodes in all of _Star Trek_ history, this one ranks with "I, Mudd," "The Trouble With Tribbles," and "Trials and Tribble-ations." The best part of this episode, not involving the doctors, but just as funny, is when Seven "hangs up" on the Hirogen. Who hasn't wished we could do that to the robo-callers?

    Funny thing is that the Doctor didn't tell the Prometheus EMH to do anything but press "Fire", so it's technically his fault for telling him to fire it without telling him to aim the torpedo at a target first.

    One of the great things about the Federation is they're consistently "superior" in tactics and technology because it's an amalgamation of so many distinct cultures and species. I grew up with Star Trek, from TNG to Enterprise, which colored my perception; The Federation is an inspiration for what we can be. Something we should aspire to be (something Picard and Discovery abandoned because the writers didn't understand why that outlandish principle existed). A black captain, at a time when that was still controversial, and the series never even addressed it. "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." - MLK

    I believe this hints that the Defiant class was getting put back into active service nad production due to the efforts of the DS9 Crew given that there where only a half dozen of them when the Defiant herself was assigned to Sisko. Why would 2 of them be following an Akira unless they were becoming more common.

  • @Euripides_Panz

    @Euripides_Panz

    2 жыл бұрын

    More common, yes. They weren't coming out of mushroom spacedocks like spores. They're still high-maintenance. Escorting a larger asset is more in line with their original intent. Originally a prototype for a fleet, not just a class. Defiant was effective, apparently, on screen in everything from minelayer to battleship. It's shown on science duty, even though it was specifically stated lacking such specialized amenities. Prometheus was a refined warship with a higher cost, but much longer duration, endurance, and even more firepower in mind. Multi-vector mode was gimmicky to be honest. Redundancy for three effective parts is a lot less efficient than say two armed and armored halves. I imagine two three ways of going to rebuild the fleet from war losses. First, lightly armored frigates with independent multi-role capacity, long range, good speed, modest maintenance demands, and power projection on par with a heavy cruiser. Second, a less numerous warship with roughly the geometry of Defiant, slightly smaller and more compact, taking advantage of tech refinements, experience with Defiants in the field, with emphasize on greater agility and defensive weapons for escort and fleet defense rather than more powerful frontal assaults. Supplement Defiant class with lower build and maintenance costs, lower crew requirements, and more sustainable vehicle for peacekeeping. Less common, and more specialized Interceptor based on an armored Nova design, with more firepower, powerful sensors, quad nacelles, a second impulse system, and twin reactor. Splitting into two would be impressive, but probably not worth the development and construction costs.

    You know, I never really thought about it, but it's actually kinda lucky that the Romulans tried to steal the Prometheus. If they never tried to steal her, she probably never would have gone within range of the alien relay network and Voyager would never have been able to send the Doctor to her. Without that, Starfleet wouldn't have known Voyager wasn't destroyed until she got home or a ship did pass within range of the network. Thus, they never would have set up a team to try to contact Voyager, and the series would have been very different.

    It would also stop the nebula class attacking the stolen Prometheus... And prevent Voyager from stopping the Equinox that was murdering its way through the Delta quadrant. And prevent the Lakota from intercepting the Defiant that they thought was commandeered by changelings. And prevent the Enterprise-D from hunting down the Phoenix that was murdering its way through Cardassian space and about to start a war. And prevent the Excelsior going after the stolen Enterprise Seems like it would do more harm than good.

    @@Slavir_Nabru I mean, the thing is, we know that starfleet in the 2260s already had command codes which could override shields and presumably weapons and other systems, had they kept such a system in place, with authorization from whichever admirals, it would allow such encounters to be even easier. Other than the Voyager vs Equinox, but I'm sure Torres could disable an IFF system.

    A lot of people giving shit to this ship, but the overall design and technology are quite decent. The ship basically has two drone ships, each one with their own shields and weapons, this can cause target saturation, where the enemy can't concentrate on one ship, spreading out it's firepower among them all, and should the enemy concentrate on one ship, it can move back out of range and have the enemy change targets then re-engage. With the limited AI it was able to engage and defeat romulan warships. It did show flaws, such as predictable attack patterns and obviously the main section is the control for the other two drone ships whenever there is insufficient personnel, as well as we can assume that separating then will decrease the shielding they each have (but this is somewhat mitigated by the regen shielding). The biggest flaw in all of this however is the creators of the ship, the Federation. Their peace like mindedness holds the ship back, as it was clearly shown, with medical AI the ship was able to deploy and attack successfully, but even then it required patterns that can be exploited by the enemy, having a more war oriented mind, specially one with the "art of war" in mind would make this ship far deadlier, specially if depeployed in force, and would allow for a cheaper ship, as it wouldn't need med bay, mess hall, or even life support, along many other things biological entities need. There is no perfect ship, but for hit and run tactics where numbers and firepower is key, this ship fits the bill very well.

  • @janeysprings583

    I'd simply like to add, that in Star Trek Online? This ship can nearly compete with a cruiser, like Galaxy class, but split into three and you become something like like Defiant. In the end, this ship can't defeat a full-fledged cruiser, or defeat a full-fledged escort (like Defiant)....but it can be either at any given time, and that gives it a power very few ships ever had

    A) suspension of belief, to keep the plot moving forward. B) it's a prototype NX-##### , other vessels (and perhaps this one, after it's tested) may have safeties installed. C) while logical, Starfleet vessels attack each fairly regularly. The Maquis used Starfleet vessels, others might take similar measures negating the point.
