Star Trek DS9 - Episode 321 - Garak is a very good tailor...

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I take no credit for this show, scene or anything else. I merely provide it as a public service. :) SPOILER ALERT! Do not watch unless you want to be aware of how the episode ends.
The background here is that Garak has been exiled for a long time among a people that hate him, and has wanted to return to Cardassia. He's labored for years as a tailor in bitter loneliness, resenting the menial task when in the past he was a powerful man in the Obsidian Order.
So at the beginning of this two-part episode, he takes pleasure in blowing up his own tailor shop as a means of escaping assassination. He and Odo go on a sort of buddy-cop adventure only for the tables to turn and Odo ends up captured and Garak is given the chance to reconcile with his mentor (and secret father) Enabran Tane - head of the Obsidian Order.
Things get tense when Garak is asked by Tane to torture Odo for information about the Founders. There are lots of great moments, but ultimately Garak and Odo escape and return to DS9 as the Dominion wipes out both the Obsidian Order and the Romulan Tal-Shiar.
And so Garak returns to DS9 - to the shop he blew up himself. He will not return to Cardassia. He will remain in exile and disgrace. But at this low point, Odo visits him and extends a rare olive branch...
It's a great moment for both Odo and Garak as characters, and a good example of the interplay and development that made DS9 such a great series among the Star Treks.

I just realized. When Odo suggested that they have breakfast and Garak pointed out that Odo doesn't eat, it was a realization that they both play a part, act like someone they are not.

As humiliating as it is to have to admit you sold out your comrade and even tortured him for meaningless information, Odo understands Garrack's unbearable desire to return home. It's the little details like these that create true friends, and it's why DS9 was absolutely amazing.

  • @Paerigos

Well - the main point was not the information - Garak pretty much knew there was nothing meaningful to be found. He simply needed for Odo to break. And he did that. For reasons Odo pretty much understood... and well he did it too later... only to pull back from it at last second like Garak... Funny - maybe without Garak Odo would not have pulled out of it in Sacrifice of Angels...

Conflicted people in extreme situations is what made DS9 different and better that the Star Treks of the time. TOS and TNG had too much of the "we have a perfect utopian society, you barbarians" overtone. Do you sell out your morals for the survival of your people? Ladies and gentlealiens, I give you Andrew Robinson, the first amongst a host of MVPs in the _Star Trek: Deep Space Nine_ roster. It is positively unconscionable that he didn't get an Emmy for his iconic portrayal of Garak. But then again, I could say the same for a score of actors in the main and recurring cast. A magnificent series, the likes of which we may never see again.

This is the most theatrical scene from the whole series. The remarkable about this scene is that it is one take, no cuts at all and the camera is frozen on garak. Also there is no background music at all. It's raw. It's awesome. But I wonder why they decided to do that since this was a very a-typical approach to an otherwise pretty standard series.

I love how we only see a small reflection of Odo's silhouette during this scene as he and Garak converse and connect. It's a lovely bit of setting that may go unnoticed by those who don't see any significance in it. I love it. it's so different from the artless scene setting that so often takes place in modern movies and television shows. the actors/characters may look at each other, but we only ever see Garak's face and reactions as Odo expresses a subtextual forgiveness, and implies a desire for friendship by inviting the "simple tailor" to share breakfast with him. I love it. It's so sad that it took Gene Roddenberry's death for Star Trek to do a series that showed it's full potential in characters, story, writing, and even effects. DS9 is just that series. every one thereafter had become significantly worse, and all the ones before were not quite as good.

This is a perfect example of continuity - The scene in the Way of the Warrior is designed primarily to set up the background for the upcoming Klingon invasion of Cardassia. I love how this scene is shot. We stay on Garak the whole time - we only see Odo via his reflection, and even then it's only a dark, muddled silhouette.

I wonder if this connection - Odo's need to stand with the Federation against his people, even though he desperately wants to rejoin them, and Garak's decision to not reveal what he's been told and thus regain his own place - is deliberately established to prefigure Garak's later treason on behalf of Starfleet Intelligence. After all, he too ends up fighting against his own people for all that he loves them.

I remember seeing the trailer for Improbable Cause the week before this episode premiered which started this 2 parter and thinking it was going to be a boring episode, by the end, I was speechless and couldn't believe I had to wait for part 2. Reminds me of when two Muslim brothers I knew met Indians in Nashville in the late 80s while in College, who helped them acquire a car and a job from the hotel their family owned; In their native lands of Pakistan and India, they would have been blood enemies, but in exile, they became friends. I remember the younger brother asking me to go with him to Duncan Donuts because he was afraid his English would not be good enough, and the minute, he walked in the door, the Indian behind the counter asked him a question in his Native tongue, to which he replied since they shared a similar dialect, and thus the friendship and conversation began. I had to laugh, and afterward would tease Raz, "I think I better go with you to that Duncan Donuts, I'm not sure they will be able to understand you!" Deep Space Nine was about 10 to 30 years ahead of itself in storytelling, for what was about to transpire after 9/11 as far as world events go, it was incredible to watch, my favorite of the Star Trek series to this day!

I don't think TOS offered any characters as interesting as Garak. Indeed, in TOS the characters themselves weren't as interesting as the interactions and dynamics between them. Especially considering how "little" screen time Garak got as a "secondary" character in DS9's much larger cast.

  • @GestapoPussyRanch

Character development on TOS focused on the big three (Kirk, Spock, and McCoy). They didn't do much with secondary characters, like they did in DS-9. There are entire episodes and storylines devoted to Quark. When did a TOS series episode ever focus almost totally on Chekov or nurse Chapel?

How good is this seen? One single camera shot, taking to a reflection of another main character that you can only see in shadow, plus the dialogue is very good, as usual with DS9. Yet another example of how it's the best series in the franchise. I really hope they HD remaster it like they have TNG.]

  • @TheYorkMan
    @TheYorkMan4 жыл бұрын

Initially I never really cared for Garak, as a character, in DS9... His entry in those early episodes seemed to only be there to further the 'one-shot' element of the first 2 series.... Before TNG ended and they could really explore the Dominion arc which would be the backbone for the next 5 series. His nature made no sense, and they never did really explain why he was exiled, rather than just killed for whatever 'crime' he committed... However.... As his background got delved into, and he as a character became so much more than just an 'Ex-member of the Obsidian Order', it did become apparent how the screenwriters began to enjoy the character as well. In the end, he not only became a pivotal member of the DS9 'family', but was instrumental in both the war against the Dominion, but also was there liberating Cardassia from Dominion rule... Oh, and all credit to Andy Robinson for what he brought to the character as well. It's been noted by all involved in DS9 (both in front of, and behind, the camera) that his acting craft, emotional and nuanced, defined how they all either reacted when acting alongside him, and how his developing character was 'written'... Brilliant performances through all seven seasons!

Did you all miss the double subtext? The first part you caught. Odo: Sisko would approve a "tailor's" shop. Garak: Sad thing, I was a very good "tailor". But the second: Odo: We should "eat breakfast". Garak: I thought you didn't eat. Odo: I don't. Neither Garak nor Odo are as they appear, and the invitation is not to share eating.
