I have the feeling that the star trek tv series where shot on cheapish film material or maybe even early digital cameras from the looks of it. With that said it might be possible that the footage is as good as it gets and would be impossible to remaster to hd

So, for Star Trek HD remasters, the problem isn't the film used. The film used was high enough quality and still exists in its original form. This is what was used for TOS and TNG remasters. The problems begin when it comes to things like effects and editing. Effects were not made using the original film, but were rendered at their smaller broadcast resolution. They would need to recreate each effect again and render in HD. The editing was also not done at original resolution, so they would have to reedit the episode painstakingly in line and in sync with the original. This was done for TNG. The remasters were sold for a very high, but fair price, and sales figures were down. And that was for TNG. A lot of us would love them to release remasters of the other series, but that's unlikely to happen any time soon without some miraculous cheaper process.

In the documentary, they talked about how they had to find the original footage and re-scan for HD, but there was really bad organization and some episodes only exist in their pre-edited form. So they had to search through 10 different barrels of film to find the right shots etc

That's what I like about Star Trek intros. No shooting, no phaser fire, explosions, charging Klingons... Just one ship (or a station) and space, lots and lots of space. The most exciting moment was when that wormhole opened at the end. But despite all this, the impression is just great. This is a sign of a great series: even the simplest opening reaches the viewers.

It was a great intro because it tells a little story. It is not just a ship whooshing by. First we open in the deepness of space, then we're gradually aware that there's some activity and the space station in the middle of nowhere. There are ships coming and going and people in space suits working on the thing. One ship (which fans know is the Defiant) undocks to go somewhere and suddenly there is the wormhole! Where is it going? What is the Wormhole about? We know just enough for the story to want to know more. It is a perfect introduction

Funnily enough DS9 when you think about it has a bigger message of unity than all the other treks despite being alone in space. The cast had the least number of humans as the main cast instead opting for the massive majority of aliens and on top of that the crew of DS9 were at the forefront of working with the Klingons in real brothers in arms style. Your right they may be alone but they are a real symbol of unity.

Tv today seems to get confused with that and we get plenty of super dark, gritty and frankly depressing shows that lack characters we care about or lack any kind of entertainment due to commitment to shock value or depressing the audience. The good shows know how to blend dark and light and be entertaining. DS9 is one of them that got that right.

Funny thing is when I was younger, DS9 was my least favourite trek series but now I am much older and have seen it all the way through again, I rank it closer to the top. I think the reason being based on a station that didn't move it was much more of a character drama than any of the other shows, which were largely adventure stories on ships encountering all sorts of crazy stuff each week. You have to appreciate some of the really amazing performances the actors put in this show consistently, particularly Andrew Robinson as Garak. Also I can think of two episodes of DS9 that for me are again right up there with the best trek episodes of all time. My most memorable one is 'In the Pale Moonlight' which is incredibly powerful, dark like no other trek episode I have ever seen and thought provoking.

IMHO, this is the best Star Trek series - every season is awesome, character development is at its finest (makes you really care about the characters) and there are many fascinating alien races and recurring characters. TNG has a mediocre first season; TOS has little to no character development and many stereotypes, e.g. Chekhov and Scotty; Voyager has Neelix who is something like the Star Trek version of Jar Jar Binx; and Enterprise takes two seasons to really start being entertaining. To sum it all up, Deep Space Nine is the best.

I only finished watching it mid this year, I felt it dragged on a lot and I absolutely hated the relgion aspects, I also found the ending was very disappointing. Sure there were some exceptional episodes but there wasn't enough of them, I still liked it more than Voyager however. I watched TNG later in the year and I enjoyed it much more, I also found that it had a satisfying ending unlike DS9 and Voy.

  • @MetzgermeisterBG

*SPOILER ALERT! DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE SERIES* I'm with you on the religious aspects of the show. Everytime someone mentioned the Prophets, it made my eyes turn. In addition I can also note that Kai Wynn is the most annoying character in the series and I enjoyed watching her perish, it would have been even better if she had died a season or two earlier. I don't feel let down by the last episode, however. The final battle between Sisko and Dukat was as epic as it could be and somehow it's nice to see that the ending isn't fully a happy one since we don't get to find out exactly what happens to Sisko after his ascension (that's the only way I could call it). As for the ending of the other four series: TOS doesn't have a proper one; TNG's seemed so dull to me, I don't even remember it and I only watched it a couple of years ago; Voyager has the best ending in my opinion of all five series; Enterprise's ending was absolutely degrading to the whole series which got cancelled when it finally reached its potential. Other pros for Deep Space Nine: Sisko's got to be the most badass captain of all (he's black, after all); Cardassians are one of the most interesting alien races in the franchise (and my favorite one) and Marc Alaimo and Andrew Robinson did one hell of a job portraying Dukat and Garak (if I didn't know any better, I would have thought that Garak was actually Robin Williams); the Ferengi served as a good comic relief without making you cringe... too much; Odo's relationships with Quark and Kira are also very emotional and interesting.

I absolutely love DS9. It sorta strays away from the exploration aspect the series would mainly focus on and goes more in depth with the politics and various religions within the Federation. Instead of just focusing on a single ship exploring (or trying to get home) it focuses on an entire station at probably the most strategic location in the entire quadrant. Life on a space station is completely different compared to a starship. We've all heard about battles/wars that Starfleet has been involved with in the past but we never really got a chance to see what real warfare is like in Star Trek until DS9 came along with the Dominion War. It shows a darker side to the Star Trek universe and what complications Starfleet has to deal with to protect the Federation, including the existence of Section 31, the "unofficial" organization within Starfleet to get things done that Starfleet otherwise wouldn't be able to accomplish due to the values that the Federation stands for and holds so dear. Also a good portion of the episodes really tie in with each other one way or another instead of a whole new location and story per episode. I found it phenomenal with how they tied the Bajorans religion into the plot of the whole show. It truly showed us a whole different aspect of the Star Trek universe

  • @MrPLebbie

It;s so funny how underappreciated DS9 was on it's release and now how it's enjoyed such an resurgence of appraisal amongst today's viewers. A lot of it is down to the change in audience. In this era of Game of Thrones, Walking Dead etc people want more anti-heroes, moral ambiguity, more complex, less heroic storylines. When looking back on the Star Trek franchise as a whole , DS9 ticks those boxes the most which is why it's being so championed now. Is this justified? Probably - especially from season 4 onwards, although this praise also has a element of because 'it's different' or 'i's an alternative' which doesn't always justify that a show is great.

The french horn is indeed majestic in this, I used to play it a little, and it was an honor to do so but I wasn't good nor patient enough to advance much.

I love the DS9 intro but the sped-up music in the latter seasons drives me up a wall. It sounds like everyone's in a rush to finish and the powerful theme gets no time to breathe.

I've been watching DS9 a lot and I noticed that there's actually two versions of this theme tune. One like this and another which just has a single trumpet/horn playing the main theme throughout. I've got to say I prefer the latter... more relaxing to listen to. Though maybe they changed it as the war with the dominion began.

I know this song could mean anything to anyone, but to me it somehow makes me think about the entire lives of these characters, and I mean before, during, and after what we see on the show. Is it just me or could this song work for any long story also? Sci-fi/fantasy type I guess.

This intro beats them all. It's just so gentle but strong, as if to glorify mankind's achievements. How it pans around the station like that, showing what we can achieve as a species. THAT is the essence of Star Trek, and by God I love it!

One of the things I love about star trek scores is how perfect each one is to match each unique tone, characters, and vision the specific series creates. I can't see deep space 9's music laying over the next generation or voyager intro scenes. I can't see voyager and TOS swapping musical scores. Like or hate it, Faith in the Heart only works with Enterprise. And it's details like that which make star trek even richer for me.
