It is actually better. The original score was done with a smaller pick-up studio orchestra as the entire film was made on a smaller budget than the original ST Motion Picture which was over budget and over blown. I remember reading at the time they used a skeleton orchestra with 20 violins as opposed to a full orchestra like London Symphonies which would have over 40. Smaller wind section, too.

That was a really great episode - how to fit so very much into 40 minutes? How to fit a whole other life into a few minutes? The show achieves with us what the story achieved with its character! Believe it or not one of my good (Trek-loving) colleagues regards this episode as lame. He is a few years younger than me, though. Think of Picard's secret longing to have lived a more conventional life with wife and kids. Deeply touching in all ways. In one of the movies, Picard cries at the death of his nephew - the closest thing he had to that family. And then Picard meets Kirk that time, and both dwell on the idea of being married to their ships - sometimes the real-life fate of the Navy officer... We should not let it mean anything to us out here in "the real world", yet we do and it does. In the original poem "The Inner Light" (which George Harrison also built on), we read "Without going out of my door, I can know the ways of heaven". Perhaps we should amend that to "some of/part of" the ways of heaven, but the Holy Spirit came to me in my bedroom, and from that moment I KNOW this is the truth. Star Trek did this kind of thing for us, and there was always a fierce debate as to whether the show was religious (Roddenberry was determined that it was not, and was not even such a nice guy, yet he had the vision - perhaps literally, and I am pretty sure there is divinity in there somewhere, in spite of everything).

Could talk about how beautiful First Contact theme is, the swashbuckling weaving of the Wrath of Khan, the threads through Voyager, the Beauty of Illia's theme, the cheeky Stealing the Enterprise, or the hopeful, epic, gorgeous Generations theme that captures the spirit of Star Trek; but to be honest the entire performance in it's entirety is incredibly special. One of the few videos on KZread I'd be genuinely gutted to lose access to; it captures so much of the values I learned through Star Trek, as indeed many of you in the comments have too. 🖖here's hoping Star Trek captures or rediscovers the magic once again in the future.

Too bad that nowadays, in the "deconstruction era", they doesn't seem to want to make at least one scene like that where we could appreciate the titular ship in the show in it's full glory. I also always liked this main theme much more than any other. Probably because back in the day the Trek of my childhood was TNG :)

The vocals, performed by singer Louie Jean Norman (b. 1913, d. 2005) were only in the 2nd season opening title recorded in the 1967. Season 1 used the "cello version" (a more subdued arrangement also performed in this concert) and to avoid paying music royalties to the vocal performer for Season 3, yet another opening rendition was recorded using just a very theremin-like organ sound for the main theme instead of a human voice, screwing Loulie Jean out of continued royalties. Or so the producers thought. But then came the perpetual reruns, and because it is widely considered the best arrangement, most foreign markets ran Star Trek with only the 2nd season title sequence, so Loulie continued to receive her fee after all :)

The main melody from the First Contact theme, the one that starts around 1:04:55, is one of the most beautifully unfolding melodies I've ever heard. When it crescendos with the cymbal crash, no matter how many times I've heard it, I still get goosebumps. Jerry Goldsmith was such an amazing musician! Also, I'm so glad that they arranged a suite from "The Inner Light" Next Generation episode. In addition to being an excellent arrangement of that music, it reminds me in part why that is one of my favorite Next Generation episodes. Speaking of goosebumps, when Picard says "oh, it's me, I'm the someone" at the end of that episode... such a powerful moment. One of Patrick Stewart's best performances in my opinion.
