As a youngster, I could never figure out how imagined survivors could think and talk to each other while the landing party was talking to them. It was almost as if they were fully developed men. After watching it several times, it hit me that is how powerful was the Talosians' ability to create illusions, as they could conjur up ones who could think and operate on their own.
