In relation to the bridge set being destroyed, there’s a moment in that scene where you see Troi take a seat at the helm/con which quickly cuts away before she fully sits down. The reason it cuts away so quickly is that Marina Sirtus sat on a burning ember from the pyrotechnics on set. They couldn’t reshoot the scene once the set was destroyed so they still used the footage.
When I built the model kit I had in the 90's I remember painting it blue as well. I used the sprue from the D and all of the other model kits I built to make a from scratch Borg cube because there wasn't an official "to-scale" model. You could say that in my bedroom the Borg had assimilated the Enterprise.
“There’s still some milk in that teat, apparently.” - Adam Clery, 2022
The issue about colours looking different under studio lights was not limited to the Enterprise model. In TOS the command crew on sreen is wearing gold uniforms, yet the actual wardrobe was in fact lime. That's why Kirk's dress uniform and Wrap around, that were of a different fabric, were green and not gold.

Adam! Thanks for stopping by! Great to see ya in another great video!
I would have thought the Enterprise would have had a bumpersticker that says "Honk if you slept with Riker", or "Blonde Borg have the same fun", or something sponsored, like "Pepsi; the choice of the Next Generation".
Adam thanks for presenting again! I do enjoy seeing you present in your wonderful rambling speech.

Makes sense that the Enterprise-D would have an absolutely *enormous* sick bay. It could well be the *only* medical facility available to the crew in a fairly large area of interstellar space.
10 Forward was the main hangout and Sick Bay was the hospital on the ship. But every section of every deck had a small medical station and a lounge. Theoretically you could never leave your area of the ship.
@ModernClassic

Somebody made a 3D CG walkable version of the ship a while back and I remember walking around on it and thinking "this thing has more bars and lounges than a cruise ship". Having a space with Null-g in Sick bay makes sense if you have ever seen people do aqua therapy (especially after being paralyzed or spinal surgery) or have seen the DS9 Episode "Melora" (where she had to use a wheel chair because she came from a planet with higher gravity) so when you are the Federation flagship and you travel to many uncharted worlds, you might encounter species with gravity different from Earth/Federation standard...you could see how that could be more useful than "saving you putting your feet up when you sprain your ankle."

Like season one with the Moclans ( TNG "The Outcast" had the species with no gender and one who feels like female and attracted to Riker) and Seth flipped it to be all male species, with some born female as an aberration, and made a whole series of episode based on that premise. Technically, the solution to Cause and Effect was made by Riker in every loop, but Picard kept going with Data's wildcard option. I always thought it was odd that Riker made it sound more like an order, rather than a suggestion. Still, a good episode.
IMHO, of all the ships, the NCC-1701 is the most iconic but the NCC-1701-D is the most beautiful. I also love the Excelsior class for being the workhorse/Swiss army knife of Starfleet for 100 years.
@Adam Cleary Nice to see you back in action again! You and @Sean Ferrick create some really great pods!!!
They also built the 4-foot model because the 6-foot one was HUGE, weighed a ton and it was a pain in the ass to work with (the motion control cameras could hit the model if the operators weren’t extra careful). Fun fact: most of the lighting is from the inside, all the windows were holes and neon tubing was put inside the model shell. There was also a 2-foot model built for shots they couldn’t do with the 6-foot one.
Technically, the Generations model was the original model, just repainted and stuff to make it appear more detailed for cinemetic presentation.

Maybe its because I genreally just watch treck cultre for ups and downs + cetacean observations but, I feel like its been a while since I have seen Adam and I have to say its good to see you again.
The schematic of the Enterprise D that was illustrated in the Engineering Run is the one with the Bi Plane, Duck and a few other things. I was there from the beginning.
Great to see you back, Adam :)
A long time ago I read an interview with the man who painted the original Enterprise model. He said the paint colour was called concrete, because Gene Roddenberry wanted it grey like navy ships. He then went on to say that the problem with concrete is that it's very good at absorbing the colours around it. The main colour near the original model? That was the blue screen it was shot in front of. So it absorbed the blue colour making the ship look duck egg blue.
I'm very happy to see Adam again, I was concerned he had left or been fired or something. Glad that's not the case. Hope you're doing well man! :)

Welcome back Adam! Always good to see your videos. :). I would love one on the Species 8472 bioships (Am I the only one who thinks they look like a combo of Vorlon and Drakh ships from B5?)
I'm surprised when Adam was talking about the color blue, as a bit of tribute to Nichelle... It's Blue-ee ( from the Changeling)😛
Decompress main shuttle bay in "Cause and Effect" was Riker's idea, NOT Data's.
welcome to trekculture, sean is pretty nice, ask him any questions while you learn the ropes.
Social media (AOL chat rooms) in the late 90's could be toxic as hell, especially regarding Star Trek.
I bought both Enterprise-D the tech manual and the Encyclopedia.
Huge nerd admission. When the Technical Guide came out for the 1701D, I was in 7th grade. A few other guys and I would sit in the library and figure out how to move around in the Jefferies tubes. The worst part is that we each had ranks within the group. I was an ensign, and the others were admiral and fleet admiral. It is kinda sad when nerds pick on nerds.
This was so cool, that I couldn’t not subscribe. This is so cool. I love Star Trek.
Sad news, The Hollywood Entertainment Museum closed in 2007 😭 I just looked it up thinking did I miss a museum when I went in 2018 but it was already gone. Now a gym, supermarket and takeaway 😲 I know there is an Ent D bridge project on the go to bring one back on display through, they have an FB group I've been following. Think they are setting things up for a perm home soon
6:03 Ten Forward also isn't on deck ten. A simple counting of the external windows shows that the highest deck with windows on the angle shown in the Ten Forward set is deck twelve.
That explains why the little model I have of it was blue
Welcome back Adam!!

I'm assuming the bumper sticker on the dreadnought D is a reference to a near-identical one from the movie "Spaceballs".
Fun fact: The "gold" uniforms in TOS were actually greenish in color. But under the studio lights and on early color TVs they ended up looking yellow. Which was carried over to later series.
@willmfrank

The Enterprise is also green. So was Spock's makeup. The underside of the Klingon ship was green too. All of that greenness got washed out, except for the darker green shading on Spock's eyelids and ears...And even that was toned down in later episodes and films.
This was a fun and interesting video.

Mike Okuda talked about the CGI option. The problem wasn’t as much an issue of not looking good enough, but rather an issue of production schedule. As Okuda put it, the technology was untested for use with a weekly TV show. Even a small technical problem could derail show filming and cause enormous issues. So even though the lower price and capabilities were appealing, they stuck with the devil they knew (models) to ensure the show could be produced on schedule. Most everyone seems to agree that they made the right call for the time as they were just a _little bit_ too early for the technology.

More like “more blood from that stone” or more “life from that corpse” The blue colour would explain why the plastic model one could buy was blue instead of silver white.
Adam insists you should not willingly incriminate yourself on video, then by the end, he does so himself. Well done, Adam. TrekCulture, I think Adam is trying to not be allowed to do episodes anymore. But I loved it. So, tough.
Ahhh, Ten Forward did change at least once. It became the president's office for The Undiscovered Country.

Having made a modelk of the Enterprise-D when I was young, I already knew about it being duck egg blue, which was a surprise to me at the time.
My biggest gripe with the bridge of the Enterprise for Generations was not that they added the side work stations or the stairs leading up to the captain's chair (or even the chair they finally gave to Worf), it was the lighting! It went from being so bright to looking like someone had lit it to be a gothic dungeon. That along with having the computer suddenly have a massive problem with reverb throughout the entire ship (including the bridge)... it really didn't work.

@joermnyc

They reduced the lighting because the sets were built for lower resolution TV cameras. On higher resolution film stock all the flaws (like gaps between panels, paint errors, etc) would have been glaringly obvious, but they didn’t have the budget to fix it. So lowering the lights “hid” the issues.

@@stefanmisch5272 even watching the footage on this video, I was wondering why it was so dark. 🤔
Mr. O'Dwyer: We know i watched you doing it and laughed my ass off x'D
I honestly thought the Generations saucer was an editing error or something along those lines. Well, I learnt something new today
I hadn't realized there were so many size inconsistencies in the Enterprise-D. I'll have to look around if you've done a video about the Defiant (which has much more significant size/continuity problems), or if not, that would be good for the future.
I noticed the changes of TNG Enterprise, but shrugged it off as refits. The TOS enterprise actually went through something like five different changes, or refits, the last three minor but there. BTW, in 1960s through 80s TV the TOS enterprise looked white. In fact the 1970s Enterprise model kit had for the paint of the ship as white. The original TOS model was not duck egg blue but a slightly greenish mid grey. I saw in person the refurbished version (which I think was much more to what it would have looked like in the studio, without the studio lighting, inferior film, and TV broadcast changes). It was grey with a slight tint of green. Duck egg blue is much lighter than the ship was. The movie Enterprise's color parts (the rest was white with different shininess) were duck egg blue.

The "Cult TVman's Fantastic Modeling" website has an article by Gary Kerr called "A Modeler's Guide to Painting the Starship Enterprise" which shows full-color diagrams of the TOS Enterprise's paint job, and gives formulae for mixing paint to apply to your own models. As Scottysaid about his alien booze "It, erm...It...It's green."
@brancampbell
Жыл бұрын
I learned the green intermixing was for the camera to help capture the contours of the ship, as the model would look more 'flat' when done in one color. Since the green here wasn't visible to viewers.... Is there any connection to the 'gold' uniforms effect?
You folks have created your own easter egg in this video. The 9th fact presented is they actually blew up / destroyed the Enterprise-D's bridge, during Generations & the space was given over to the Star Trek Voyager production. As Adam states this, @13:28 there's a shot of the Voyager crew coming from Capt Janeway's ready room, onto the bridge. But instead of Kate Mulgrew it is the actress 1st hired to portray Janeway, Geneviève Bujold!
It wasn’t Data, It was Riker who suggested opening the main shuttle bay door.
