Star Talk Chat Room - A Deep Dive Into the Cosmos, with Neil deGrasse Tyson - Week 4
Ғылым және технология
On this episode of StarTalk Chat Room, we’re taking a deep dive into episodes seven and eight of Cosmos: Possible Worlds. Given that we are currently living in the “Corona-verse,” Neil deGrasse Tyson is joined by video call by his intrepid comic co-host Chuck Nice.
We start with episode seven, “The Search for Intelligent Life on Earth.” You’ll learn about the Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) located in China which has a 500m diameter disc, making it the largest radio telescope in the world. Neil tells us what it was like to film at the telescope itself. Find out why radio waves are the most ideal form of communication across the galaxy. Neil and Chuck ponder if aliens were trying to contact us via radio waves before we invented a way to detect them.
You’ll hear from executive producer Jason Clark to talk about one of his favorite moments from the series. Discover more about the writing process behind Cosmos: Possible Worlds. Then, we explore the intelligent life on Earth that you might have overlooked: bees. Neil explains how you can get a cosmic perspective studying something so close to home.
After the break, we welcome long-time friend of StarTalk, Madame Saturn herself, Carolyn Porco. Episode eight, titled “The Sacrifice of Cassini,” explores the journey of the Cassini space probe’s mission to explore Saturn and its moons. Carolyn was the leader of the Cassini Imaging Team and she takes us inside the control room on one of the most epic journeys of our time. You’ll hear about the overlap Cassini had with the Voyager mission, including Carolyn’s own involvement.
Discover more about the famous “Pale Blue Dot” photo. We look at Carl Sagan’s influence on inspiring the public with scientific information and how Carolyn continued that initiative with Cassini. Lastly, we ponder what the next mission will be and what tantalizing information could be out there awaiting our discovery.

I love when scientists have a sense of humor...it’s so refreshing.
I was relieved at the sight of Chuck Nice...these times! 🤘😖
I love the Cosmos show and I could listen to you narrate for hours, sir. I loved hearing about the Mycelial network and needed out due to being a Star Trek fan. And it was just so awe-inspiring to watch the origins of life on our pale blue dot. Then, learning about Kondratyuk; Huygens, and seeing the simulated death of Cassini-Huygens probe...man I got so emotional
It does not start till 3 AM here in Birmingham, U.K. 🇬🇧 I hope I’m still awake. 😴. Ah well, at least I ain’t got work in the morning. (Lockdown here in Brum).

Bader Alaraimi - If you think that’s bad, there’s Covid-19 deniers out there, already. I’ve run into several of them. I wish that I could say that they were trolls, but they’re very serious. Trolls usually don’t put this much effort into something. Does it make me a bad person, to hope that they get the virus?

I absolutely loved her story about how the pale blue dot came about. It's such a simple picture...but powerful rendering of how insignificant we are.
@TrickOrRetreat

I wouldn't say insignificant, because we are significant. But it highlights the wastness of space and our current place in it. The perspective of the blue dot, should render us humble. And should inspire us to do great things. We really should consider working together.
Ah I enjoyed the recent bee-story episode tonight and spent time attending to the stirring my homebrewed mead (fermented *honey* beverage) while watching. Great episode guys!
Another set of 2 beautiful episodes
Neil and Chuck are such beautiful people inside and out.
I don’t think Neil was kidding when he said he wasn’t authorized to talk about that. He totally changed the subject real quick
It is wonderful to see how humanistic these scientists are. Carolyn Porco and Neil DGT are both so invested in informing the general public about scientific advancement. And I really appreciate Chuck Nice's interest and enthusiasm.
I would like to see more of this Star Talk Chat Room episodes, its fun to listen to..

Love talking about possible extraterrestial life 💙🌌🌌
I like what you learned about bees. I keep bees in local traditional longhives and so far you just took a look at the tip of an iceberg that is called the world of bees. They all some what different and have personalities - some are agressive, some are more laid back, some are in a hurry and some move more relaxed, some fly slow with big loads some fast with light loads. They recognize you, they know that you help them and don't want to do them harm. Best way to understand that they are all individuals is to look what hive "guards" do. They all get the job done, but they do it a bit differently.

One of the ways we humans sped up communication was sending light through fiber optics, and I wonder if it would be possible to vary the wavelength of the light coming from a star so communicate with the universe.

Hi. You have interviewed Brian Green. What about Sir Roger Penrose and what he proposes with his Conformal Geometery.

Hi Dr Tyson and dr funny. My name is Robert brown,I have been a star talk subscriber for the last 2 years. I want to ask is it possible for mars to have lost its atmosphere/magnetosphere,ect... When Theois collided with earth to form the moon. The question is when that collision happ end is it possible that it could have caused mars to be decemated by the shockwaves and shrapnel from the collision? Thanks so much for your time and I can't wait to see if this gets answered.
Never thought I will be able to correct Neil but Hulk is not from DC Comics. It's Marvel :) Big fan from Poland

Is Sat like a vacuum of the solar system cleaning the dust or something and exgarding material that cannot break down or producing the material that makes up the rings along with other space material and rock as the result of its gravitational force?
@BlackEpyon
4 жыл бұрын
The rings are from moons that have been broken up by tidal forces. Jupiter is much more massive than Saturn.
Chuck: They shake their butts! Neil: Scientifically correct term is "wiggle their abdominal area"
Chuck microphone is too sensitive or Chuck is too loud , i am with headphones and it hurts my eardrums when Chuck is excited
I totally agree with Neil, this is how i also view the world around us, we may think we our more intelligent than other creatures, we have created technology and machines to depend on but we never have a deep communication with the nature, what if those creatures sees us more powerful than them and the same time more foolish. We are judging other creatures which have more sharper instincts than us according to our standards.
Is there possibility for the universe being in an infinite fall onto itself and by that as sort of imagining or projecting physical world around ?
@Shifty4L

yes
Chuck is nice and loud as much =D
It would be nice to be able to hear you well, surely afford a couple, medium quality mics and stands, so that volume equalization could be a thing

i know this is off topic but have scientists considered that Dark Energy might be a consequence of the multi-verse? what i mean is could the vacuum pressure outside our universe be less than inside our universe? Causing it to expand the same way a balloon expand in a vacuum chamber?
The Credible Hulk is a facebook page too :3
How gravity affects time, is it something to do with Theory of Relativity ?
@BlackEpyon

Yes. Space and time are intertwined, so what affects the one will affect the other.

If we are trying to decode and understand bees' communication then ETI should have the capacity to understand our communication.
Just for you information in bee farm you sometimes force the queen to stay were the farm is to produce the honey. This is cruel since bees have the will to fly outside of this farm. Without the queen stuck in the farm there is no honey.
