    @Austin Ryan Your wrong asf. Off by a long shot. Goose ran into him started smiling ready to be his normal, goofy self asking him where has he been, then when the guy responded “upstairs” in a low, soft, sad voice. Goose’s smile instantly turned into a concerned look. Goose was genuinely worried something was wrong. I’m sure Goose has no idea dude was about to walk away from the team. Goose knew he didn’t show up to practice, but it’s no way he knew he would quit. Goose probably thought he had a family emergency or something that’s why he seemed worried.

  • @ThomasFromTN

    @ThomasFromTN

    2 жыл бұрын

    The guy "quit" for exactly the right reason. He lost the desire to play and he had a passion to do something else in life. If someone else cannot cope with that state of mind...too fucking bad. I understand exactly how he felt. As a sophomore in high school, I was getting more and more time working with the varsity first team. Suddenly, it hit me...I didn't enjoy playing the game, anymore. More to the point, I knew I would be sticking around for all the wrong reasons...principally, giving a shit what someone else might think if I "quit." Coach even let me take a week off practice, said if I changed my mind I could come back, nothing would be said. But I knew myself...I came to that realization I just didn't want it anymore after giving it a lot of thought, and a week away wasn't going to change that decision (and it didn't.) I still loved football...but playing just didn't mean anything to me, anymore. Case closed. Footnote: Once in college, the college coach ran into me in the Student Union, sized me up, and declared, "Hey - you look like you could play some ball. Come on out for spring practice." But, even then - I just didn't have the desire I'd had all along before choosing to walk away...so I never walked on in college, either. By the way...that college coach went on later to become an NFL head coach. Not saying I was pro material...my point is that desire is just as big a component as ability where choosing a course of action in life. I 100% understand exactly what that NFL rookie meant when he decided an NFL career was not how he wanted to make his mark in life. And I'll say again - anyone who might fail to appreciate someone choosing their personal, private direction in life for themselves...too fucking bad.

    It was nice to see Marvin Lewis try to talk Matthews out of quitting. The NFL is such a competitive environment, he could have just as easily said, "ok", and moved on, but he took the time to try to make sure Matthews knew what he was giving up, to forestall any regrets later, classy move.

    I have a lot of respect for Terry Allen. He had a bad season the prior year and had the impossible task of replacing Jamal. He showed up to camp in great shape; seriously he looks like Terrell Davis compared to Brookins and Barnes here. Terry wasn’t great in 2001 as he was rusty in the early portion of the season and dealt with injuries in the mid portion. But by the end of the season when Grbac wasn’t throwing a ton, he stepped up big and rushed for over 90 in 3 of 4 games, including the wildcard game against Miami.
