Star Fox Zero: Better Than I Remembered

Whenever a series of games lasts long enough, there's bound to be a divisive sequel or spin-off cropping up in the crowd eventually. Generally I tend to avoid these kinds of games out of a lack of interest, but there is one that I can't help but feel different about. Star Fox Zero, eh? Let's take a look back at Star Fox's (currently) last outing, and discuss why I think it's not as bad as others do.

Hey all! Sorry for the lengthy wait on content. I am hoping to have another vid out fairly soon though to sort of make up for it. As always any help with sharing the vid is much appreciated, but no pressure. Thank you all regardless for watching my content also some addendums: -the game *does* actually tell you that you can switch the tv and cockpit view in the tutorial. I missed this though as I was playing on an old save. -it's called the gyrowing, *not* the hydrowing lmao. Idk why I kept calling it that. -You can play every level in a row in the arcade mode

I wish more people would have gave this game a chance instead of presumably giving up on it after the first two levels because they couldn’t get used to the controls , because the game is not that bad at all once you take some time to get used to it ,and yes a few levels are kinda annoying with the controls but I think the overall fun gameplay makes up for it ,also I’m glad you pointed out that you can switch the cockpit screen from the Gamepad to the TV I remember a lot of KZreadrs never really mentioning that back when it first came out.

Yeah the view switch is something that I think a lot of people tend to overlook, although I can't entirely blame them since I don't remember anything in the game telling you that was an option

I thought that Zero was fun when I first got it, but wasn’t a big fan of the motion controls, and all the bosses being free range. It’s still fun, but it takes a while to get used to the controls. I really liked being able to switch between the Arwing and Walker at will. As for the story I would have preferred they had continued from Assault and just ignored Command (although, in this hypothetical I’d want them to salvage the few good characters/elements from it). I would have preferred if Nintendo had made a rail shooter on the Wii because the motions controls and aiming would have worked so much better. Despite my problems with the game I can admit it’s graphically beautiful and I’m glad others got a kick out of it. I would love to see a Switch port that fixes the game’s various problems and adds new content. Unfortunately Platinum Games have officially stated they don’t have any plans to port Zero. Barely anyone owned the Wii U (I’m one of 8 humans alive who did) so they missed out. Esphirian and UndyingNephalim have new trailers for their games. Neph has a new demo available and Krystal’s voice actress narrated the video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/mYSTx6yonaqthdo.html). Esphirian’s trailer also has Krystal speaking and it’s a much darker take on Adventures (kzread.info/dash/bejne/dZhktrukc9rRdMY.html). Both look super good. Assault was my favorite game in the series. The reason is because it did something new with the story, and I liked the gameplay. That being said the dialogue is super cringy, it’s too short, and could have been done better. There’s rumors about Namco potentially remaking the game. But, that’s based on a statement about them hiring people to remake some GameCube games on the Switch, and we have zero idea if Assault is even on their list. I hope it’s real, but Star Fox leaks are wrong the super majority of the time. If it is real let’s hope they fox it’s various issues. Good video. I didn’t agree with some of the points, but it was well put together. Good luck.

Star Fox Zero is the only game in the series I’ve played, and I actually really enjoyed it! It just took a while to get used to the controls (which are rough I won’t lie). Star Fox Guard was absolutely based though, I won’t let anyone tell me otherwise.

2:21 I am coming for the gameplay but the story of Star Fox Assault is what really got me into the series. An epic and emotional story mixed in with awesome arwing and running and gunning. If you haven't already I would recommend playing star fox assault. Just make sure to change the controls to a classic 3rd person controls.

@@Wyrlwind All I would say is that if you change the controls to the traditional 3rd person controls before playing, you will have a much better time with it. Also it's not like adventures were 95% of the game is on foot zelda style. You have a variety of weapons to use and most of the ground missions have the land master or arwing to use depending on how you want to handle the situation. There is a reason why people who are unbiased says that the last good starfox game that wasn't just 64 agaun was Assault and why people hope that it's Assault that's getting a remake/remaster from those bandai namco rumors. If you do end up playing it make a review video on it. I would be interested in watching that.

The story grip is actually valid when you consider that starfox 64 3D came out a few years before. 64 3D matters in this conversation because remake or not they still choose to make a star fox game that reimagined the that was just remade within the same generation. At the bare minimum try to come up with a new villain that doesn't feel like Andross (I'm looking at you Anglers).

  • @kurokamina8429

The landmaster in this game is interesting in that I feel like the biggest problem I had with the landmaster was finally resolved. I hated how in 64 the landmaster was a pain in the neck to aim with the ground screwing with the aiming radical which kind of made me like the blue marine more. But in Zero the aiming is no longer tied to the stick but the motion. I am actually able to more things outside of tge the things that are ground base. Heck even the bossed meter being increased allowed the hover function to be more useful. The gravmaster i feel like is mostly good for getting higher elevation avoid land obstacles or certain attacks like the titania bosses sweeping attack or to attack Stridders weak point. The walker is used for those situations that require fast ground speed, confined spaces. Situations that just wouldn't work with the landmaster. The walkers flaw is that its fragile, easily pushed around, with a low hover. The landmaster makes up for that by not being so easily pushed around, having a base laser canon that doesn't require power upgrades with a good hover function. The Gravmaster is there to give it even better elevation to avoid obstacles but not too much as you can only stay in grave for a limited time.

I have this weird interest when it comes to the “dark age” of Nintendo during the 3DS and Wii U era. I like to play games that a lot of people don’t like and form my own opinions on them because let’s be real most people haven’t played hey pikmin, paper Mario color splash, metroid prime Federation force, animal crossing amiibo festival etc. Star Fox Zero is the most recent of these games I have decided to play. I think the game is really enjoyable. The controls are a bit odd and take a bit to get used to but I find the game to still be fun nonetheless. My only real complaints is that I find some of the walker sections to be kind of clunky and annoying and I wish there were checkpoints after every phase because having to redo the entire level all over again is really annoying. There are checkpoints sometimes and then other times there aren’t and I’m really confused about how the checkpoint system works. This is my first star fox game so the reuse of a story doesn’t bother me but it definitely would if I had played the previous games since I care very much about story in video games. When it comes to stories in games, I’m not asking for Shakespeare or anything, I just want a decent story but reusing the same story from two other games is just really lazy. I also got star fox guard and that game is way more fun than I thought it would be

I like the idea of the walker sections but in practice it's super clunky for sure lol. All around the game is a little janky but the controls are something I've always felt like people exaggerated quite a bit. I don't think the controls are great, could be better for sure, but after about half an hour it felt like second nature to play.

One could say the Walker allows more maneuverability in confined spaces? (Ok I'll see myself out for that one) Real talk, I'm glad you made this review. Besides more Wrylwind content which is always welcome, StarFox Zero is a game I've been defending since it came out and it doesn't get enough credit. I'd love to see it get a second chance and I can't wait to talk about it on my channel.

The Gyrowing, a vehicle so forgettable you got the name wrong every single time. For what it's worth, I actually enjoyed my time with Zero on the first playthrough. Maybe it was because it was after using motion controls on Switch, but the aiming clicked pretty quickly.
