Star Fox is one of my favorite game series of all time, but to describe Star Fox history as "troubled" would be a massive understatement. Star Fox started out on the Super Nintendo, then received a nearly perfect game on the Nintendo 64: Star Fox 64. In this Star Fox retrospective, I discuss the Star Fox franchise's fall from grace, with its rise in popularity in the SNES and N64 days, to its unfortunate downfall. In this video, I review and analyze Star Fox Adventures, Star Fox Assault, Star Fox Command, and yes, even Star Fox Zero. If you're a Star Fox fan like me and really enjoy this series, please do me a favor and rank the games from worst to best in the comments. I also would like to hear what you think - I read and respond to comments and enjoy taking the discussion further. Thanks for watching, and more videos are coming soon :)

l know star fox zero is not perfect, especially with how difficult to master the controllers are, but once you master them you don't really have to look at the gamepad unless you are z targeting, nor will you need the reticle, play the game for a few hours and you'll get the hang of it. And just gotta say, what you said about a space sim taking pictures from a window? that's bs man, that just tells me you never really learned to enjoy the gameplay and just had a negative attitude throughout the whole game, in other words, you never gave it an opportunity, because once you really get into it, you'll notice it is actually the best the franchise has offered. I just dislike how everyone has collectively gotten in line to trash talk the game, I understand since it is important that nintendo learns from their stupid mistakes, but someone's gotta say something good about it man. Yes it is kinda stuck in the past and didn't evolve as much but it really isn't that bad, I just hope Nintendo hasn't completely thrown star fox out the window, especially with how successfull starlink was.

It is kind of hilarious that Nintendo, a company known for repeatedly making sequels that only increment and improve the same repeating formulas slightly over long periods of time (Mario and Zelda), could never do that even once with Star Fox. Almost every Star Fox game feels like it's trying to be a completely different IP, even as far back as Star Fox 2.

Assault really had that “the end” vibe for the series. I just wished there were more levels preferably in the arwing, but I’m going to say that they lacked the resources to do so and opted for a multiplayer maps to cut corners on time and money. They took a narrative approach with a linear story, which I don’t mind, in fact I preferred since they were trying to keep the single narrative consistent. The arwing levels did in fact feel “slower” on-rails than the previous games. But Assault is a solid game overall and definitely my “true end” to the 64 timeline. The final level and the last scene made me tear back in summer 2005 with the music and dialogue between a cast of characters we had gotten to know over the past years since 64.

Now we just need Nintendo to stop fearing the wrath of overzealous 64 fanboys and actually make a new game. I'd love to see a continuation of Star Fox Assault, which is where they said they'd pick up if they ever got the chance due to essentially removing 99% of Command from canon. But unfortunately, all we keep getting is remakes and reimaginings of 64, because a significant, loud portion of the fandom doesn't understand that Star Fox needs to evolve and innovate to stay alive. And then they have the gall to blame Krystal, Rare, Namco, other fans or even IWATA for the stagnation of the franchise.

I just finished a playthrough yesterday, believe it or not. It fine as it's own game, but it fails when you Campared it 64. Most star fox games failed when compared to 64. The only one I say that not the case, is Star Fox Adventure, and the only reason why isn't because it's that good of a game, but becomes it's not even in the same genre as the rest of series. It really up to preference at that point

The funny thing about Adventures is that it could have been saved by having Fox get shot down at the beginning of the game, leaving him without a ship and without means to contact Great Fox right away. The set up was already there because if I remember Adventures took place at a time when the team's financials weren't good due to lack of work. Great Fox was falling apart, active pilots had been reduced to Fox and Slippy since Peppy was getting on in age and Falco had struck out on his own. It wouldn't be hard to believe Fox was stuck in a primitive planet for a while since the others didn't have much in terms of resources and manpower to conduct a search. You could then write Fox's motivation to be either find a place where he can send a distress signal that (hopefully) Great Fox can pick up or find a means to repair his Arwing so he can head off, only to get dragged into the thing with the dinosaurs, Krystal and General Scales.

  • @jacindaellison3363

    @jacindaellison3363

That's a good idea. Also, maybe it was shown at the end of the canonical comic "Farewell, Beloved Falco", at the beginning of Star Fox Adventures, the team don't even think about Falco, wondering if he is OK. I think Adventures takes place 6 yrs after 64, but that is too long of a jump. At 6 yrs, you'd think the team would st least try to contact Falco after not hearing from him for that long. My idea for Adventures is to have Krystal be an active character as well. But, have Star Fox try to investigate what happened to Cerenia, her home planet. They have no idea Dinosaur Planet's plight is connected to Cerenia's destruction. Fox works with Krystal while Slippy and Peppy try to find clues to what happened to Cerenia. But before all this happens, this story can take place a few months after Falco left. Fox is thinking about him, worrying if he did anything to make him leave. Slippy, despite having to put up with his arrogance and sly remarks, misses him too. Peppy misses him, too but knows that he has to find his own path and understand that he had to decide at the end does he want the adrenaline rush or does he want a team/family? His coming back=he sees the team as family. He'll always want action but not at the expense of abandoning them. I hate that they went that reason for why Falco left in Command. Like, you're making him go through the same character flaw! And Krystal was done dirty with some of those endings. Fox firing Krystal was bad, too. And now finding out that he also has an ego makes it bad, too.

8:45 Actually, Falco does more than just that. He also helps you find a few items, for example he shoots down some asteroids in Meteo to give you golden rings & a few other power ups & sometimes he gives a hand in completing mission criteria, best examples are Zoness & Macbeth. In Zoness, you have to shoot down all the search lights to go to Sector Z, he shoots down some of the search lights, and in Macbeth near the end of the level & beginning of the boss fight, you have to shoot down 8 switches to go to Area 6, then Venom 2 & get true ending, but if you fail, you go to Bolse, which leads to the fake ending. The last switch s behind a wall thing (Don`t worry it`s destructible, but it`s better to not bother it if Falco is not down by that point), and Falco shoots it for you, and hitting the last 2 switches is not as easy as it seems. P.S. Readers, you are welcome to add in anything else I missed

Falco does many small things for you. (List below) In general he is the best pilot, whereas Peppy is the experienced one and slippy the technician. On meteo he warns you seconds before you'll get attacked from behind ("Watch out Fox!"). Later on meteo he shoots down some enemies who attack you ("I think it's your turn to be thankful") and later shoots down an asteroid that pops a golden ring (one of the stony ones that you usually can not destroy, but this one you can destroy yourself. But without Falco you probably wouldnt know it works for this one). Nothing special on Fichina. But if he is not present, Leon will also attack you instead of only Wolf. On sector X, in the beginning, the warns you again about a wave coming from behind. ("Enemy group behind us. Man they're fast!"). He also "helps" you taking the warp to sector z. (He gives you feedback that you're doing it right when you fly through the warp gates). Nothing special on Bolse, Venom 1 and Katina. On solar, he warns you when the boss is re-appearing from under the lava ("Here they come"). On MacBeth he helps you with one of the switches needed for going to Area 6 and Venom II. On sector Y he reminds you to use bombs against many enemies ("take them down with one shot!") and gives you negative feedback if you fail the hidden mission target of 100 points ("is that the best you can do?") kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYuFrKhxednKhdo.html On Aquas he tells you to "shoot a torpedo to help you see [in the dark]". On Zoness he helps you at the end with two of the search lights to come to sector z. Also gives you an early warning against the minefield before the boss ("Jeez laweez, what is that?"") On sector z he helps you shoot down one of the missiles to get to area 6. I like him most, because he's the best and most confident pilot. Where othes see a threat, he sees a target. He hates when you have to save him, and is usually much better then enemies. On sector X he wants to "have a little fun" and is eager to see the secret weappon. (I as a kid was afraid of it). Later he even mocks it ("destroy what? He's cracy.") while Slippy can be hit by it. On Titania Peppy complains ("Don't go too fast Falco") when he's going ahead on his own. He is also eager to shoot down the titania boss ("Let me get a piece of that action Fox") Also confident on Venom I ("Let's show the monkey who is boss").

If they really want to move starfox forward and away from the same old, maybe try making it more open- universe with missions and side quests, with a fully developed story so the players feel more immersed in the starfox universe. We don't need gimmicks, we just need something fresh and well made, with some new game elements and some of the classic rail-shooter action we love.

Would love ports of it and Adventures, I know 64 is the fanbase's golden child and respect it and would love to play it someday, but Assault specifically just interests me most personally for its additions and overall vibe. Really hope someday someone can convince Miyamoto to get over himself when it comes to his views on this series (and f-zero) and also just properly move the series forward from Assault, storywise and in gameplay. I actually think on foot ground missions are a great next addition and they just gotta improve on what Assault laid out. And since Starfox 2 has finally seen the light of day, they can reintroduce Fay and Miyu to the crew as well. Lots of potential here than just doing remaking 64 essentially a 3rd time. Also yes, shoutouts to Space Harrier and Panzer Dragoon, there's also a remake of the first Panzer Dragoon on current day platforms for those interested.

My first N64 game back in the day was StarFox, so it holds a special place in my heart. It is such a fun game and I went on a Twitter thread rant about how a lot of games have lost that replayability factor and this game is my favorite example of that. Discovering a new route in 64 meant getting better at that route then suddenly finding a new one or messing up and trying to get back on the correct track. That being said, I loved Assault. I don't think I was nearly as bothered by the on foot portions as many people. I'd have liked an expansion on it through better controls an maybe some NPC interactions and missions for story changes in later games. Watching so many playthroughs were people used the charged shot for the WiiU game I suddenly understand why. Those controls are horrible. It takes the shooter out of the shooter.

This was really well made! We don't see many in-depth looks at the Star Fox franchise like you did, covering all games in the series. You did a great job expressing how this franchise always gets the short end of the stick despite having a great foundation. Star Fox 64 is one of my favorite games of all time, I have a tradition of beating it every single year, something I've been doing since the 2000s. Every year in late December, I dust off my N64, put my admittedly rusty Star Fox 64 cartridge into it, and do my usual route to see if I can finally beat my high score from many years prior (spoiler: I never manage to). The route I always make is Corneria > Meteo > Katrina > Sector X > Macbeth > Area 6 > Venom. I always do the hard route requirements for each of those stages, but I choose the "change route" option for some of them because they're better to rack up more points (like Meteo over Sector Y, and Sector X over Solar). Anyway, I really enjoyed your editing style and your narration! You got a new subscriber :D

I know it's not an official Star Fox entry, but I was a little bummed there was no mention of the Star Fox crossover with Starlink. I genuinely mean it when I say there was more love and potential put into that crossover than the latest entry to the actual Star Fox series. Most of the original, 64 voice actors return to reprise their roles, the characters have on point and fun interactions with not only each other, but the base Starlink cast, the gameplay feels incredibly adaptable for Star Fox players, heck. Ubisoft goes the extra mile to include Fox in the base game's plot and it honestly feels so natural. My biggest gripe has to be that a good chunk of content is locked behind payable DLC. Aside from that, super solid video! You summed up my feelings about the Star Fox series really well. I know it's a long shot, but since Nintendo is picking a handful of Gamecube games to rerelease on the Switch, I hope Star Fox Assault is one game they consider giving that treatment.

Would we have seen Assault at all? 2. Would DP have ended up as an Xbox exclusive, being their answer to the Zelda franchise? Given years later Microsoft took on an indie game about a fox that was very Zelda inspired as an exclusive, then acquiring Tunic felt like such a wink & a nod to DP in a way. Def wanna check out some of these games now by the way.

It hurts to see something that you love slowly wither into obscurity. Star Fox has a ton of potential just waiting to be explored, but likely will never happen. Just imagine free roam exploring a dead starship, and having to retrieve a sort of black box to get the data on what happened and then having to fight your way back to your ship against a rogue machine, or alien monster that roams the ship?

It’s one of Nintendo’s IPs with a bit of a rocky history so they’re rather afraid to innovate. Command was like bad fanfiction and killed the series for a bit and while I really like zero it was just 64 again but with better production value. I want to see something more like with adventures and assault, bring in new characters and a new story, I want to see this universe grow. Hell maybe some spin-offs too like a game centered around star wolf, I would definitely play that

Really fantastic video. I'm not sure what else can be said, this is all basically how I feel about the series as a whole, pretty much sums it all up. At the end of the day they need to just make a SF game that's fun and with arcade-y gameplay, and they just need to spend a good amount of developing a full experience, none of this where you have fewer levels and less replay value than SF64; there's no excuse at this stage of modern game development. There's so much opportunity with the core gameplay too, which is basically about quick movement and quick shooting. They could add a vehicle, like a speeder bike or hovercraft (like in Wipeout), to go down narrow caverns and into the core of planets to destroy an enemy base down there, using the left stick to dodge environmental hazards while using the right stick/gyro controls to fire at enemies. You could even do a level where you have to race Wolf to a supply depot via ground vehicle to stop him from blowing it up or something, avoiding rocks and enemy craft while speeding along. You could also do a level like the Macbeth level from the original game (in a hollow planet), except that you go back and forth between driving on the top and bottom of the surfaces, if that makes sense. It doesn't have to be all on rails, as long as the movement and shooting are quick and satisfying. You could have a handful of levels like in Rogue Squadron, where you have a number of objectives laid out (and can change as you play the level and events unfold), that necessitate navigating terrain and speedy, urgent flying from one location to another in a free-form manner, protecting some targets or ambushing enemy groups and stuff, just in that super-satisfying SF quickly reactive gameplay. Like all-range mode, but not limited to just one square arena where you basically have visibility of everything all at once. They need to make a full game with like 25 levels, a bunch of different ways to earn medals (not just hits), and a big variety of difficulty in finding new paths through the solar system, and for the levels themselves. Stop playing to the gimmicks and ask "is this a full, fun experience?"

Find it hard to find retrospective Star fox videos. Planning to play SF64 on 3DS as well, nice video over all. Also noticed that you placed megaten ost. I'm willing to guess you played them as well let alone future video?

The perfect Star Fox game *does* exist. It's just that the pieces to it are scattered all across it's shattered legacy. Every new Star Fox game feels like it has something great going for it, but it's ultimately held back by some poor design or direction choice by Nintendo.

Miyamoto confirmed that Zero has a very STEEP learning curve. It can be Mastered, but it may take about 3 or 5 whole days in training mode just to understand the controls. Cause StarfoxZero is F-zero Gx levels of hard😓. You have to know the function of every single button when playing, or else!🤕

The main reason why assault is my favorite is because it doesn’t have Andross or even feels like a 64 copy. The amazing story to the new ideas I really love Star Fox Assault assault

As a Star Fox veteran who has been blow away by the original in my teenage years, who has always loved rail shooters since Space Harrier and After Burner in arcade, I consider Star Fox Zero as a masterpiece and strongly disagree with almost all the consensus on the web. I love the three main Star Fox for their specific qualities and I usually can't tell wish one is my favorite, but sometimes it's Zero.

16:10 ... You uh, you did check the options menu for the Twin-Stick option, right? It's still annoyingly slow, but it's actually third-person shooter controls.

Absolutely agreed with your views on Star Fox Zero, I remember being super excited to being able to play Star Fox again and then just to have it fall tremendously short thanks to the horrible controls of the wii u game pad Seriously though, Nintendo would do that game justice if they could bring it over to the switch and give the players the option to play with either gyro or traditional controls. They really should do this because behind the messy control scheme is an amazing Star Fox game with incredible visuals and does have the Star Fox charm. For example, the arwing dogfights between Fox and Wolf were nothing short of spectacular!
