Star Engine Demo Reaction | Kryz

Ойындар

Star Engine is the name of Star Citizen's game engine since before moving to Amazon Lumberyard. It was a heavily refactored version of CryEngine 3 from Crytek used since the first in-engine video released at the start of the Crowdfunding campaign. More specifically, the last update integrated into Star Citizen's code was patch 3.8.
On 2016-12-23, CIG announced with the release of Star Citizen Alpha 2.6.0 its move to Amazon Lumberyard game-engine (which is also based on CryEngine 3.8) in order to utilize the integrated Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Cloud-Computing features "to support next generation online gaming". It is not known which version of Lumberyard is currently integrated in Star Engine and how CIG will handle future iterations (as of November 2016, the current version of Lumberyard is Beta 1.6).
Star Engine aims among others to be seamless without any loading screens or invisible walls despite being massively mutliplayer.
Engine development is still driven within the CIG studio structure with some of former Crytek employees supervising the project

Even if people wanna scream "scam citizen". The StarEngine capabilities ( including server meshing ) is an industry game changer. Anything that struggles with server performance will instantly benefit from this tech, including medium to large scale competitive PvP games like PUBG, Tarkov, or SCUM as reasonable for examples.

At minimum CIG have proven the proof of concept. And if other studio's want to compete or benefit, they have to develop it themselves. And this is what's great with what CIG have accomplished, and a big part of why I backed the game. This will bring gaming to the next level, and also other arenas where such tech can be applied.

Great react video! You can see why fans are so passionate. Most features shown are already live in Star Citizen, with the rest scheduled within a year. Game has a KZread channel for updates. It's in alpha with a steep learning curve & bugs, so it's not for everyone. Next month, check out the game for free during their ship expo, featuring nearly 200 ships to try. Ships are pricey but it's to help fund the game. Big ships are for large groups & capital ships will require new tech to run (like server meshing, there's a prototype demo'ed live on their channel) $45 for a starter package. You can get & earn other ships in game. But occasional in-game resets happen (still in alpha development). Only invest more if you're want to support the project or skip the grind. Otherwise, you can just watch its progress and buy later. Alphas are not for everyone. It requires an adventurous spirit.

CR's promise for the game when I started in 2013 was for an immersive experience like no other. He hasn't disappointed me over the years. He has made some mistakes, but I think CR is extremely excited about his dream becoming a reality. Consequently, he has allowed that excitement to cause him to overstep. I feel he is delivering on his promise, even if it is taking a while. I understand that he and the entire CIG team are building an exciting new engine that they can sell. In order to do that they have had to give the engine priority. This has caused the two games to take quite a while. I am willing to wait in order to get the game I have dreamed about since I was a kid. The sale of engine licenses may allow them to continue delivering content for those games into the future.

Its allright you have this view that the focus on Star Engine, have been on the sacrifice of SQ42 and Star Citizen, But I would say they all is connected and beneficial of eachother, as CIG had to develop an Engine to be able to develop SQ42, Star Citizen and to achieve the all the milestones of Star Citizen within our lifetime. Like 100 Solar systems, with all its conent. If you want to pick a scapegoat, its the choice(our choice) to develop SQ42(a part of the pledge). Where most of CIG development resources have been allocated for years now. As much of the assets and tech put into SQ42 also will be used in Star Citizen. And they havent talked about selling or leasing Star Engine at this time. But its a sound choice of they have a stable and competitive Engine. The same is for SQ42 if that game is released within 2 years, this would also generate income to continue even without backing. But I guess everyone has their viewpoint

I agree with you that the games and the engine were all complimentary of each other. They couldn't have built the games without the engine and vice versa. I didn't mean it was always their focus. I just meant that Starengine has the potential to be a money maker and CIG most likely looks at it like it is a blessing. They have alternative income avenues now and their success is not so much tied to whether they sell enough ships. When CIG first purchased a license for Cryengine, it didn't allow them to resell the engine, so selling Starengine is a relatively recent development. Although I would bet that CR always hoped it could come to this.@@Paisa231

Some stuff from the StarEngine demo isn't yet available in Star Citizen, but probably more than half of it is currently playable. The Pyro system, the animals, and some of the newest graphics features from the demo (like the destruction system, fire, new lighting stuff) isn't in the game yet; but the entire Stanton system and it's 4 planets and their cities and stations are in, the mining gameplay loop is quite fleshed out and refined and very enjoyable (it's engaging and requires effort, and you can accidentally blow yourself up, and you can/have to use different gear and equipment and strategies to mine different things and to do so the most effectively), there's a very active PvP dogfighting community, as well as a racing community (and a racing mode with race tracks you can try infinitely), and they host server-wide "dynamic events" every now and then that vary between space based or FPS based, complex missions that they generally try to design to incentivize players to fight each other or to band together to work together to accomplish some goal (or just a mad dash of chaos with everybody trying to kill each other to claim a ticket for a free, exclusive ship). If you've got friends that also play Star Citizen, it's a helluva drug.

I mean you really think a game where moving around boxes manually in almost every single gameplay loop, you think that is going to ever be more than the niche game it already is? Even if we ignore that from a technical standpoint the game is completely broken by all the bugs, even if we just look at the gameplay and how it is intended to work one day, it is utterly boring and requires an organized group 24/7 to do literally anything. SC backer and player here. What y'all have to realize is for as expansive and impressive as this game looks, right now it's mostly potential unrealised. If you migrated Starfield's gameplay, characters and scenarios into Star Citizen's game world, you'd have the definitive quintessential space game of all time, especially if it could remain an MMO. That said, being that SC is an MMO still in early development; it's a bit vapid despite being an absolutely breathtaking technical marvel. Again: huge potential yet to be fully realized. There are no "quests", a very sterile faction system, no overarching plot, nothing to drive you other than "do shit to make money to buy stuff", and its punishing when playing solo. I urge all those interested to check it out, it's truly a unique gaming experience no other game provides (the closest has been NoMansSky). Wait for the free fly events, or pay the minimum ($45) for a starter ship and hop in....just be sure to temper your expectations because its still in early alpha stage.

Lot of commenters mention the little hiccups. This is because of the streaming in/out of objects with persistence entity streaming(PES). It's the sacrifice of not having loading screens. PES is amazing on this scale. every object, down to an empty water bottle, is saved on the location someone left it. The hiccup is the loading in/out of out of those objects, sometimes it has a little delay. PES on a solar system scale is really something. This engine just keeps going man, it doesn't stop. It's so seamless and immersive. UE5 is really good on "the usual suspects" like graphics, no doubt about that. But it doesn't offer the seamless experience of Star Engine. I've been playing Star Citizen for a while now and as like others I have thought, where is the progress? Then I saw this video and I thought: okay, this looks like 11 years of development right there.

Main issue with Star Citizen right now is the server stability. One of the core techs being worked on is dynamic server meshing and replication layers. The goal is to seamlessly transfer from one server to another and for servers to dynamically spin up and down. For example you could have two large organizations in a space battle over a planet. The interiors of each capital ship are their own servers, meshed within a server for the exterior, while someone on the planet is observing from another server without any performance issues you would have if everything was happening on just one server.

Now let me see how you have a few hundred servers connect to each other, simulating billions of miles of a solar system with 150k players and another 1-2 million NPCs on top of that and do that with anywhere from player connecting with 20ms-200ms ping to your servers. That is what is required for an MMO to work. What they showed so far is only a proof of concept, as that it technically works but it yet has to be tested if it actually can scale in the way it is required.

By 2025 we will have 4 systems Stanton, Pyro, Nyx and Odin. We are getting closer to Beta. Try it and see for yourself what is implemented. It is free up to Nov 30th UE5 with Nanite is impressive. But having all the UIs in-game and this scale is not yet possible with UE5... although it will not take long

Oh yeah, glad you brought up UE5. Something people don't realize is that UE5 was made for limited zones, similar to Starfield's Creation Engine. I am no expert so I don't know how far CDPR are pushing UE5 to keep their big zones in CP2077, but CIG spent years modding the heck out of the CryEngine to get 64bit streaming and that way completely eliminating loading screens. They even hired Crytek staff to work for them full-time. So anyone thinking UE5 can do every thing better, think again.

This is the "just temporary" culmination of 11 Years of Trial & Error and Research driven by Cris Roberts Vision and the Support of more than a Million Backers. Each Tech presented in the Demo is the result of years of development time by the brightest graphical engineers. Its not magic though and can still be run on normal everyday PCs and Servers without requiring a Nations Super Computer. There are dozens of documentations online created over the years that can explain in detail how they were achieved. This demo rerpresents the capabilities of the engine and are currently not representative of what is playable in Star Citizen. That might be because some of the Tech is coming online throughout next year or because the online environment is not as forgiving as a Standalone Demo PC driving the Engine without having to synchronize with servers over the internet. That said Star Citizen is not called a Screenshot Generator for nothing and can produce stunning visuals in its imperfect state. Gameplay advancements will move into the game faster next year and I am stoked for the new opportunities. See You in the Verse (as we say)

I _suspect_ this video isnt actually meant for backers. It demos the capability of the engine they developed. Note the TM after StarEngine. Trademarked. This is not an jnternal nickname, it's an engine with a trademark name. I thibk the intended audience are game studios. I think CIG is considering licensing this engine to other studios. If I were Bethesda making Starfield 2, EA making a new Mass Effect, or Star Wars anything.... I kinda think this engine would be tempting at any price. CIG has a legit alternate revenue stream selling their tools if they want or need it. Granted, they are NOT hard up for cash, but StarEngine licensing could ensure they NEVER worry about funding.

Would love for them to give a kick back to people who backed prior to 2015 or something if they lease out the engine and profit from it. But as a backer I loved it and can't wait to see it in game.

Well, I don't know how technical you want to get but it seems like you know at least a bit about Multiplayer-games so I think you might be able to understand at least parts of this. This Demo was only part of an about 2 hour tech-talk about the engine. Most things they covered were already seen in the trailer (only highlighted even more later) BUT there is one aspect that is not seen in the trailer (and honestly very hard to show in a trailer) and that is ServerMeshing. If you would like to get a little technical about Online-Gaming and Server-Infostructure this is basically a must-watch: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qn-Lw5aQn7fRhpc.html (at 1:15:00 in that video)
