Hi If you want to make some new Jappan for the spokeshave try to find an old 78 record (very old style made before the 33 speed ones) , break into small pieces put in a glass jar and add methylated spirits. Shake a couple of times a day and after a few days the tar leaches out of the old record. paint on the metal you want to coat you will need at least 6 Coates note, apply 1 coat a day to allow drying time Your plane or spokeshave will look like a new tool Good luck this was a very interesting video

Great video and timely for me since I have just acquired a Stanley 53 which I want to make useable. It looks almost identical to the 54

@@Uwannawatch All done.It was pretty rusty but responded to sandpaper and WD40. Blade flattened and sharpened and base smoothed. The hardest part was loosening the blade screw which was fairly bad.

@@Uwannawatch A guy who does the work in the house I can’t do, roofing, gutters general building work etc. was doing another job when an elderly lady asked hin to dump an old box. It was a carpenters tool box with 4saws ( Kangaraoo tools I.e Robert Sorby) R planes ( Mathieson and Sons, Glasgow) a brace and bits, the spokeshave, a couple of chisels and a gouge and various other bits and pieces including a cut-throat razor. As you can imagine I have had a very interesting week exploring there origin and ‘restoering’ them to working condition. I am an amateur, having taken up woodworking in retirement, and I am having the time of my life. Unratcheting a very rusty brace was a high point and my next job is sharpening a variety of bits ( thank you James Wright on KZread) and getting the blade back into a snub nose plane which is providing a serious conundrum. Loved your video and looking for ward to seeing more. On the subject of being a simple maintenance man I recall that my Tai Chi master telling me that he learnt as much from a veteran bricklayer as he did from Zen masters
