Standing-up to Fear | David Nihill | TEDxManchester
What’s the number one fear in the world? It isn’t death, but public speaking. Ironically in trying to overcome his own fears using some unconventional wisdom in the face of tragedy David Nihill (rather reluctantly) became one of the world’s leading experts on the topic…even though he hates it. David will show you in this inspirational and hilarious talk that while not everyone can overcome fear, everyone can learn to manage fear.
David is the Founder of FunnyBizz Conference, bestselling author of ‘Do You Talk Funny?’ (published by Benbella/Persius) and the winner of the prestigious 43rd annual San Francisco Comedy Competition (past finalists include Robin Williams, Dana Carvey and Ellen DeGeneres). His work has been featured in Inc., Lifehacker, The Huffington Post, Fast Company, Entrepreneur, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, The Irish Times, and Forbes. A graduate of the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School he calls San Francisco home when immigration officials permit, and was named on the 2017 Irish America 100 List, which recognises the accomplishments of the best and the brightest Irish-American and Irish-born leaders.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

An excellent talk from David Nihill. Only David could deliver a powerful message within the context of a comedy routine. Congratulations.

Only David? I'm guessing you've not watched a lot of stand up by any other comedian.
Irish humour + Irish wisdom = 💚
This is comedy gold combined with Dave's counter-intuitive wisdom. He always crushes it.
I now understand why since I was a child and comedy central was still an infant, comedies have always been my heros. And now on a Ted talk a new hero is born. And the message really reassured me that I now need to go to confession, I'm not even religious but I fear a good priest.
David Nihill, i saw you "live" performing at Google in Dublin on the docks, i bought your book, and this TEDtalk was very emotional. Laughs, goosepumps, happiness for your friend...you're a genius, not only in public speaking, but also as a (very strong) character.
What a revelation to "stumble upon you." Humor, humanity, laugh. You made me laugh!! I needed that so badly and my spirit shifted/lifted. Thank you, Irish Dave!!!!!!!
So happy for you @davenihill . Irish humor is the BEST . Proud to call you a brother in arms

✋🏻Found him a few weeks ago. Love him!
You are an awesome person! Im so glad you came up on my utube. I keep sending you to people so that, among all the sadness and anxiety, they, like me can really laugh! Thanks!
Your life is quite an inspiration. You didn't get the glory, but you helped others to win. I guess you don't see how heroic that is. And when you help people, you don't become an egomaniac about it and think you are so special. You just go on with life. It is called comedy and you are supposed to be judged based on how well you make people laugh, but if you can share something about Ireland or be likeable or interesting, that delivers value, as well. Keep on doing comedy, even if you don't get the laughs, or the glory. Sincerity is rare. We need those kinds of people in public speaking.
David Nihill is a master of his craft.
Mr Nihill, the more clips I see of you preforming, comedy, the more I like you. You’re quickly moving up as one of my favorite comedians. Keep up the good work. From your possible very very very distant cousin lol
I can't believe it took me so long to find you! This is a very nice talk. I'm glad that synchronicity worked so that I could finally meet in Vermont. ☘️☘️☘️☘️
David is amazing, not only is he genuine, but also, his style of humor is one of inclusion, respect and kindness - the stuff of a master comedian and honorable human being.

Well said Sylvie👏👏
I could not agree with him more in 2021 my girlfriend died of covid i was picked to make a long speech in church.. i was so scared... but when i got to that altar i thought of her nothing else my fear left me it was they most positive thing in my life call it divine inspiration or whatever.... but to this day i have no fear of speaking in public again ... we all can overcome our fears ... there is always a spark
Beautifully said. Public speaking has been a part of my life for decades and it was never in the plan but happened naturally. Just spoke for a group at a VFW hall tonight for an hour. Your last part - tell your story, you know better than anyone. 100% on the target.
Careful now David. That's bordering on deep stuff. Brilliant
We love all your KZread videos David!
What a great talk and what a story. Bravo Mr Nihill and thanks for sharing this extraordinary journey that you've been through with your friends and with yourself. 🎩
I came for my morning dose of comedy, got a life lesson as a bonus!! I was a fan before this, but now I'm going to look for your book too! Thank you for the elegantly delivered insight. 🙌
I love David 💗 Comedians are more intelligent than the rest of us 😏
Solid work. Glad I watched.
Well done Dave. You are a master storyteller. 🙌
Irish Dave, brilliant story sir! Incredibly open, honest and humble view of what some people perceive as a meticulously crafted life. Thank you for sharing and especially presenting your friends story, Himesh, to the world. Nothing but respect ❤
I love this. Thank you David.
I've been reading David's emails for years (off the back of his book) and always loved his sense of humor. Thanks David!
Damn. I like him!! Puts tings into perspective.
David is so funny! I watch everything I can that he does. Thanks so much.

Great TEDx! Bravo David!!!
Quite emotional ❤
That's meaning be excited the fear. Very helpful!!!!
Nice work. Great talk and story. Thanks for sharing.
EXCELLENT! ❤😎
I got the best parts of autism for public speaking. Unlike most I’m not shy and in the right circumstance I love to share my thoughts. But I can’t tell the emotions of other people. So I can’t tell if they like me or hate me. So I just figure they like me and continue on with my talk. Works great.
Really enjoyed this.
Thank you David going to read your book after lady Fartwell has finished it, and the book.
Wonderful
Love this guy. 2nd to many Scots Commedianns - being a Scot. If he as "Danny Boy" went into a pub anywhere. Guaranteed they are both covered.
Nicely done...

" We're woke as feck over there!" 🤣🤣🤣
Just realised that Mrs. Doubtfire was an irish accent 😂😭
Ha I’m the same about speaking, but then I’m 3/4 Irish lol, I’m talking all the time, but don’t ask me to do any public speaking.😂😂
Is anyone else focused on his headless shadow?

This was 3 years ago. How is the audio so bad? It takes like 15 minutes to get rid of the echo and fix the audio. It's disappointing and takes away from the person talking.
this is just a pep talk for ireland or what
Not true if dna ten 23% Norse! What Irish?
This did not age well.
