Standing-up to Fear | David Nihill | TEDxManchester

What’s the number one fear in the world? It isn’t death, but public speaking. Ironically in trying to overcome his own fears using some unconventional wisdom in the face of tragedy David Nihill (rather reluctantly) became one of the world’s leading experts on the topic…even though he hates it. David will show you in this inspirational and hilarious talk that while not everyone can overcome fear, everyone can learn to manage fear.
David is the Founder of FunnyBizz Conference, bestselling author of ‘Do You Talk Funny?’ (published by Benbella/Persius) and the winner of the prestigious 43rd annual San Francisco Comedy Competition (past finalists include Robin Williams, Dana Carvey and Ellen DeGeneres). His work has been featured in Inc., Lifehacker, The Huffington Post, Fast Company, Entrepreneur, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, The Irish Times, and Forbes. A graduate of the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School he calls San Francisco home when immigration officials permit, and was named on the 2017 Irish America 100 List, which recognises the accomplishments of the best and the brightest Irish-American and Irish-born leaders.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

An excellent talk from David Nihill. Only David could deliver a powerful message within the context of a comedy routine. Congratulations.

I now understand why since I was a child and comedy central was still an infant, comedies have always been my heros. And now on a Ted talk a new hero is born. And the message really reassured me that I now need to go to confession, I'm not even religious but I fear a good priest.

David Nihill, i saw you "live" performing at Google in Dublin on the docks, i bought your book, and this TEDtalk was very emotional. Laughs, goosepumps, happiness for your friend...you're a genius, not only in public speaking, but also as a (very strong) character.

Your life is quite an inspiration. You didn't get the glory, but you helped others to win. I guess you don't see how heroic that is. And when you help people, you don't become an egomaniac about it and think you are so special. You just go on with life. It is called comedy and you are supposed to be judged based on how well you make people laugh, but if you can share something about Ireland or be likeable or interesting, that delivers value, as well. Keep on doing comedy, even if you don't get the laughs, or the glory. Sincerity is rare. We need those kinds of people in public speaking.

Beautifully said. Public speaking has been a part of my life for decades and it was never in the plan but happened naturally. Just spoke for a group at a VFW hall tonight for an hour. Your last part - tell your story, you know better than anyone. 100% on the target.

I got the best parts of autism for public speaking. Unlike most I’m not shy and in the right circumstance I love to share my thoughts. But I can’t tell the emotions of other people. So I can’t tell if they like me or hate me. So I just figure they like me and continue on with my talk. Works great.
