Standard Pressure Short Barrels: 9mm VS .38 SPL VS .380 ACP Speer Gold Dot

Спорт

Testing the difference with standard pressure Speer Gold Dot ammunition the difference between 9mm, .380 ACP and .38 Special. Guns used are the Diamondback DB9 3" barrel for the 9mm, the Ruger LCP 2.75" barrel for the .380 ACP and the S&W 342 PD for the .38 Special. Testing for velocity, accuracy and terminal ballistic performance. Always appreciative of any channel

The 380 is a nice little cartridge. Sure, it will never (probably) meet FBI protocol requirements. But it's a good choice for a lot of people, and it is accurate in the 380s I own. I had no idea Speer loaded a standard pressure 38 Spl with Gold Dot bullets. Learned something new there. Although I think I would stick with their 135gr +P short barrel setup.

The ruger lcp 2 was sent back twice, the p365 once with several new parts and polishing etc. they’re fine now, but obviously manufacturers have some issues, based on what others have experienced as well, with these.

I am really enjoying these vids & tests. Interesting results. I am an older large framed guy, therefore, I am inclined to carry larger firearms. Back in the 1990s I carried 4" & 6" 357 mags(S&W + Ruger)(old school). I still carry full size or nearly full size 40 cal. Or 10mm most of the time. But these results make me consider a smaller 9mm with quality loads. In the woods, no smaller than 40, but in town maybe a 9mm Shield in summer. My pocket gun has been a Shield 45 since it came out.

Nice work, thanks. I pocket carry an m and p bodyguard .380 with federal hst. Magguts +1 giving me 7+1, pinky extension. Its been 100% reliable and I can go through 300-400 rounds in a single range visit and could still go for more. I've tried iwb carrying a 9mm but I just find it too uncomfortable to want to carry on a consistent basis. I look at it this way: the odds of my needing my gun are next to zero. The odds of my needing to carry are 100%. So better to have my bodyguard on me all the time, even in the house.

This is another video I missed last year. I didn’t like those first 2 expansion photos, they look like the minimum expansion. The .380 and .38spl didn’t look like the jacket folded back. The 9mm 124gr in the most popular ammo brands is going to be a pretty good round. 115gr usually do ok too, but if you go 147gr , or less than 115gr like boutique bullet from Civil Denfense that 90gr you have see a lot of expansion issues. At least that’s how I’ve been seeing. Thanks again for the good content, I will try to not miss another one, I am subscribed and notified so I guess I just overlooked you. Have a great day.

I own one of each except what I shoot .38 special through is actually a .357. So, my 380 is a Sig Sauer P238 HD2, shoots smooth, predictable & accurate. It has a 2.7" barrel. My .357/.38 is a Charter Arms Mag Pug. Lower recoil than one might expect with the ported barrel & large grip. Center mass grouping no problem. It has a 2.2" barrel. My 9mm is a Springfield XD9-TACTICAL. (My favorite & my guard officer duty gun)That one is like Heaven too shoot. Wicked accurate, very low recoil & over 1000 rounds fired through it of many different kinds of ammo with zero issues or malfunctions. It has a 5" barrel. Well, it depends on what you want to do. There can be a huge difference in power. Typical ammo has the .38 Special standard pressure in the same ballpark as .380 ammo for energy, but if you go really hot...the hottest ammo I ever fired in this .380 was about 250 ft lbs energy. The hottest .38 Special ammo in a 2" barrel was about 400 ft lbs energy.

If it works for people, great. Far better to be armed and capable than not. Gold Dot is great in virtually everything, abd the standard pressure 124's are a fine load. Density comparison of your tissue simulants to human tissues. Tissue simulants: • Bologna -- 0.85 g/mL • Medium density fiberboard -- 0.50 g/mL • High density polyethylene (milk jugs) -- 0.94 g/mL • Water -- 1.00 g/mL. Human tissues: • Blood -- 1.04 g/mL • Bone -- 1.75 g/mL • Fat -- 0.91 g/mL • Muscle -- 1.06 g/mL • Body as a whole -- 1.01 g/mL. In comparison, 10% ballistic gelatin densities are: • porcine gel -- 1.03 g/mL • clear synthetic gel -- 0.79 g/mL. Penetration results from clear gel must be converted to results in the standard porcine gel by applying a caliber/handgun-specific reduction factor, which I've yet to see any KZreadr do. This is undoubtedly due to needing to shoot through both media to derive this factor, which would be financially prohibitive for most amateur terminal ballisticians. A rough conversion is likely: PG ≈ 0.8 × CG where PG and CG are bullet penetrations in porcine and clear gel, respectively. To which type of gel are you converting your Jug or Not Box results to? They seem to be overestimates to me, so I'm guessing clear gel. How does medium density fiberboard, which is a fraction of the density of human bone, reasonably simulate a sternum? Bologna seems a weak simulant of muscle (even a fat-laden muscle), but then the thickness is far more than a typical pectoral muscle.

Nice job on the video, a lot of people think barrel length doesn't make a difference or ammo but when it comes in my 380 it's a short barrel and I'm very particular about the ammo I use. Most of the time they're testing out of four or five inch barrels and here I and most people carrying 380 are shooting it out of a 3 inch barrel and losing 20% of the ballistics, which makes all the difference if you're wanting your hollow points to expand. I'm getting almost the same ballistics out of my 380 out of a Kimber micro using Second Amendment ammunition JHP as you're getting out of that 9 mm with the short barrel. When it comes to the 380 I'm really particular. I think Hornady makes a decent cartridge but I wouldn't care to use it to defend myself with 380. However the Second Amendment ammo they test their 380 out of a short barrel at 1050 FPS . Buffalo Bore makes some pretty good ammo too Lehigh defense but you just really need to know what you're going to be using for carry and kind of ballistic you're getting out of what ammo and firearm. When you're shooting at lower power gun. 9 mm maybe it's not as important but if I was shooting a real short barrel 9 mm I would even care about that.

For those determined to safely perform bullet expansion testing, your methodology of using standard plastic gallon size water jugs is the easiest to set up for enthusiasts. The plastic is virtually uniform in thickness across nations. H2O makes for one of the most uniform test mediums as well. The positioning of yourself , the test box and test mediums (denim, bologna and bottles) minimizes risk of ricochet. Have to ask- Ever been tempted to taste the bologna that remains after a test, say that which is intact @ an inch from the impact 'zone' ? Not that I would want you to risk lead/ particulate poisoning, I just do not like to see decent bologna go to waste.

Sam. thank you for the standard tests. Sis just got her ccw in Md. Took some thing for her to shoot and rented others. long story short. she is 65 with limited hand strength. Has shot some but not much. Great shot with her 686+ with a 5" barrel. However i don't think she was really comfortable with anything we shot. 365,ez380,ez9 and 43x. To me it appears that they all. were handfuls that took her to her comfort levels and abilities. I was supprised how much the 380ez recoiled. I've always thought they should offer it in a heavier frame.Maybe their new metal pistol they came out with. Watching her shoot these weapons makes me curious about a LCR in 327. Shooting the 32mag?? or 22 mag. Many female reviewers tend to be younger and or sponsored. Where is mom or grandma in the 60-70 year old range? I'm a big guy with hands that make a beer bottle look small. I've become very aware of how small some peoples hands are and how sensitive new shooters can be to recoil.I would be very thankful for thoughts or recomendations on weapons and/or loads for my sis that has poor hand strength.

Have you ever tested your theory on jug to gel depths?

  • @GunSam

    @GunSam

    4 жыл бұрын

I don't have to as I have watched countless other videos with 10% and 20% gel with common rounds in same barrel length that I test. It's been pretty consistent that the rounds that stop out back of jug 2 always stop average about 11" to 12" in gel depending on the gel, and back of 3rd jug is always 14" to 17" depending on the gel. I feel confident with the numbers, but even if I wasn't the rounds that have passed all FBI and IWBA testing almost always stop with denting out the back of jug 3, so it's a good point of comparison.

Thanks for watching! I don't have a great scale and the ammo bullet weight makes it change depending on the ammo, but I can tell you now that roughly the weights are: the revolver and the .380 fully loaded are about 13 oz and the 9mm fully loaded is about 16 oz.

I like accuracy, just makes it easier for good shot placement, so I like the smaller calibers like the .380 and the 38 special that has moderate recoil but very manageable. Now if I were in the outback I would carry something more powerful for bears and lions.

Overall I think Speer is the best company, but like anything else there are a few choices here and there which are better with others. Example is the Gold Dot 158 gr .357 Mag. The Hornady Custom 158 gr XTP .357 Mag is a better load even though both have similar energy. The Gold Dot won't perform well with that one as it uses the Deep Curl Hollow Point bullet. Also Critical Defense VS Gold Dot is sort of a wash in .38 Special as I can't say one is better than the other.
