Standard Missile 3 (Ballistic Missile Interceptor) - Juno New Origins

Ойындар

Here's a demonstration of my take on RIM-161 Standard Missile 3(SM-3). It performs exo-atmospheric intercept of IRBMs/ICBMs in their midcourse phase. Been working on and off it for a little while and finally decided to finish it. Features many different guidance and control schemes given the requirements for intercept. Will be modifying this soon to perform Anti-Satellite operations.

Its a bit disconcerting to realize that Governments have, and are actually planning to do this. Not to mention the idea of Perpendicular Strikes although if I recall in the video the Missile itself was on a Suborbital Trajectory so whatever debris remains will be traveling relative to its previous course, but that still leaves the issues of Ablation Cascade, and lack of Launch access into Orbit, or a general ability to even so much as maintain a Clean Orbit as it currently stands Fortunately anything below 500 KM takes about 25 years to burn up. So there inevitably will be an opportunity to begin some kind of Orbital Salvage Program in a Future Day, but 25 years is a very long time by our Standards.

@@nikelinq2899 oh Yah for some reason when I first watched it I thought it was Orbiting. It does make me wonder if a Suborbital Strike of an orbiting object is possible. Either way a real world country did shank a satelite for real so I wouldn't put it past anyone to think in war that it would be a Good idea, and then comes the Ablation Cascade...

@@ErC-oj6rcA suborbital strike of an orbiting object is certainly possible as long as it intercepts the orbiting path and hits it, I am against anti satellite missile tests because it worsens kessler syndrome

And now remember that in war times army’s satellites will not have their communications and transponders enabled all the time, but only when they are pinged by your enemy. This means you will have a good time finding satellites and trying to distinguish them from all other orbital trash floating over there. And all these kinetic interceptors cost a fortune so you have to know exactly what you are shooting. With ICBMs it’s a similar problem, but they also have a lot of their own decoys usually. You can’t shoot them down efficiently until they enter atmosphere (as decoys burn in there), but it’s in atmosphere you can’t use kinetic interceptors anymore. So I believe that despite kinetic interceptors being an awesome example of engineering, they are just expensive toys useless in real war conditions.

Is this actually how sm-3 works? I always assumed it was just an optimised and extended fuel sm-2

Yeah the SM-3 was made to perform exo atmospheric intercepts(hence the kinetic warhead), whereas SM-2(which carries a blast fragmentation warhead) performs endo-atmospheric intercepts

@@composerfreak9897 Yeah, but I'm wondering if it's possible to increase time to intercept while also reducing miss distance, but I suppose that would require impossible precision.
