Standard Form to Vertex Form Without Completing The Square Method Algebra 2

This algebra 2 and precalculus video tutorial explains how to convert a quadratic equation from standard form to vertex form with and without using the completing the square method by using another technique. That is, by using the x=-b/2a equation / formula to find the x coordinate of the vertex followed by the y-coordinate. The x and y coordinates of the vertex are known as h and k represented in the form v(h,k) which can be placed in the vertex equation y=a(x-h)^2+k starting from the standard form quadratic equation y=ax^2+bx+c. This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems for you to work on. This video also contain examples of converting standard form quadratic function into vertex form with fractions.

    If your confused in the first part of how to factor x^3 -6x + 3^2. Its because of the formula (a-b)^2 if you foil it or just remember what that would equal to, it would be a^2 - 2ab + b^2. x^3 - 2(3)x + 3^2 you can already tell that would be equivalent to (x-3)^2 by applying the perfect square formula.

    in the last example when you're using the completing the square method, why would you multiply 5/3 by 1/2? Isn't it supposed to be (b/2)^2? Therefore making the completed square term (5/3/2)^2 and then you would do keep change flip and have 5/3*2/1????? Isn't that how you're supposed to do it?

  • @randywilton3466

    @randywilton3466

    6 жыл бұрын

    ((5/3)(1/2))^2 is the same as (5/3/2)^2. any time you multiply by 1/2 its the same as dividing by 2. Same with multiplying by 1/3, its the same as dividing by 3. Any time you multiply by 1/x, its the same as dividing by x. Hope that helps if you didnt already figure that out 7 months ago lol

    It's because he added 5/6 in the brackets on the right side (to make a perfect square), this means he has to add 3 time 5/6 on the left as well to balance it out. It has to be 3 times 5/6 because he added 5/6 in the brackets. but since we need all of our numbers an variables except y on the right, we will have to shift the 3 times 5/6 that was supposed to be added on the left to the right to the left by subtracting 3 times 5/6 on the right side. Hope this made sense!
