This recording was made when jazz had reached a peak, and was the most satisfying music on Earth. The complexity even left the 'classics' behind, yet was easily understood and more expressive.

I have ALWAYS liked Kenton's horn sections, and the bass, and the drums, and even Kenton's piano playing (restrained tho it was). Kenton also had some of the outstanding arrangers of his time.

Ray Brown on trumpet, ...he injured his lip beyond repair in immediate post years... Stopped him in his tracks as a trumpet player. : ( He would have kept progressing as a trumpet player, but instead became a LEGEND educator in the S.F. Bay area. And people like Steve Gadd will tell you all about his influence as a teacher. He went on to influence hundreds of great players. Ray Brown is true Gem in the early jazz education world. (for example, he show how the melodic minor scale fits in so many more places than anyone realized before... dominant #11 scale, dom #9 b13 scale, minor/major scale, min6 scale, Dom b9 b13 scale, Min7b5 scale. ...The melodic minor scale fits in all of them if you think about it!!! : ) (Ray Brown and his brother steve, were among the first to figure this out, and teach this way, which produced many famous and successful musicians)

Lovely lilting jazz. That Quinn Davies is one great soloist. To me he's up there with Art Pepper.
