Stan Getz - Serenity - I Remember You

Grammy Awards
"I Remember You" - Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Soloist - 1991
Stan Getz
Stan Getz - Primary Artist, Producer, Sax (Tenor)
Kenny Barron - Composer, Piano
Victor Lewis - Drums, Guest Artist
Rufus Reid - Bass, Guest Artist
From the same sessions that resulted in Anniversary, Stan Getz celebrated his 60th birthday as he had his 50th, with a gig at the Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen. Joined by pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Victor Lewis, Getz (who only had four years left) plays in peak form, really stretching out on lengthy versions of three standards, Victor Feldman's "Falling in Love" and Kenny Barron's "Voyage." His solo on "I Remember You" is particularly strong.

I became a fan of Stan's as early as the 'sixties. I was a teen by then. My admiration grows with every day.
I never get tired of the "Serenity" CD. I actually learned about jazz from a nice public library collection of jazz on compact disc. Whomever chose the collection in Amarillo, Texas, in the late 1980s had good taste: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Stan Getz and others.
Nothing you can say other than this is a flawless interpretation of a classic.
Rufus played at my uncles jazz club in Yonkers New York. Many moons ago...
It is just the truth!I've been palying sax for many years and every day I got convince that most of the new players are overblowing and overplaying the instrument today and forgetting that simplicity and sincerity is the key in music,I'm trying to learn how to do that also!.Thank you!.
Que dire? Getz est une icône. Il savait tout faire avec un saxophone. Ses sidemen sont à sa mesure. Le 6 Juin 1991, j'ai pleuré. Comme lorsque l'on perd un père. Rest In Peace...
People lucky in Norway !! I never had the pleasure of hearing him live ... :( He spread (and will always spread) the fragrance of his jazz around the world ... :) Thank you for the comment ! :)

I saw him many times in Manhattan, Stamford CT and Chicago ... his playing was flawless ...he was usually quiet and shy on stage ... i once shook his hand as we crossed paths in Chicago .... He was not rosy warm but very professional.
I entirely agree with what you say ... a unique sonority that he can extract from the sax, so naturally, overflows in sympathy ... a sound loaded with much of feeling, coming from the inside... for me he played "follow the feeling"... of course, with a very crafted technical, as all of the masters... like you said "an out of league player" !! Mr. Stan Getz. Thank you for the comment !! :)

Thank you for posting this great recording!Stan was an out of league player!,and as far I heard him more I'm more sure they may no be a player who built the solos better than him!

Thank you !!
Sublime!
I heard an inerview of Kenny talking about how Jazz musicians today play mostly by head and not by ear,I'm pretty sure he was thinking on Stan when he said that.
Flawless solos .... Ler's hear it for the person who provided that great images.
STELLAR rhythm section: Kenny Barron (not guest artist - had been with Stan for several years), Rufus Reid and Victor Lewis.
While he's d written some great tunes, Voyage among them, "I remember you" is not written by Kenny Barron but Victor Schertzinger and Johnny Mercer. Probably a typo but for the record. :-)
The song is wonderful, the personnel is wonderful, the clip is wonderful! What else? Thank you By the way, I love Kenny Barron (p).
Han var Molde Norway i 90-91 og spilte i Idrettens hus i fullpakka sal. Der også spilte han nydelig jazz.

Had I been there, I would have packed the hall on my own. ;-)
Is this the 1991 Grammy winner ?
