Stamp Carving Basics // Block Printing How-To // DIY Rubber Stamps- Today I will show you how to card your own rubber stamps using supplies in the June Smart Art Box: smartartbox.com/
Supplies:
Lino cutting tool set
Waterbased Speedball printing ink
Strathmore postcards
Soft rubber brayer
Soft carving block
Also recommended: Scrap paper for testing prints, tile or scrap plastic for a palette, baby wipes/paper towel and spray bottle of water for cleaning, ball point pen
Directions:
1. Sketch or transfer your design on the soft carving block.
2. Working from largest tools to smallest remove a layer of rubber around your design. Use the smaller tools for details.
3. Clean the plate and ink it up with your brayer and pull a test print.
4. Carve away any areas you don't want to print.
5. Clean the plate and make as many prints as you like.

I wish I could like this twice; this is still the best video here on the correct way to make your own stamps and print effectively. Thanks for using the correct terminology and not saying, "so um, ok yeah" ten thousand times!

Love block carving and printing. Speedball also makes a water soluble oil ink that works great on paper and fabric and does not require heat setting of fabric. It's great stuff. thanks Lindsay!

Something I know my printmaking professor did for his blocks to keep them from drying out as easy, he would put them in ziplocks with a paper towel with water and glycerin in it and it helped keep them springy a little longer. Not a total fix, but it's something worth trying!

Thanks, Lindsay, for a super informative video. By showing the process in real time, you've provided the necessary instruction to get started. Now, I have a realistic idea of what tools are needed and what my first designs will be.

I did a wood block carving when I was in High School - it was a carving of attached brick row houses - one of them was my house. Had all kinds of detail - building were 100 years old then! I used different color paints rolled on and printed the block several times forming a long row. It looked great! I won a prize, and my art teacher wanted to buy the block from me! :) LOL! oh, I should have kept up my art then!!

I've only seen this process before. Didn't know that there was any such thing as making your own stamps until then . I love feathers and already have some stamps, but I liked seeing the tutorial. This maybe something for the future; the idea of drawing and making my own stamps is something I like.

Years ago I purchased a set of wood carving tools from a craft store that was going out of business. I still haven't used them, but it never dawned on me to use them for stamp carving. I've had ideas to do some, but didn't realize I already had the tools to do them. Thanks so much. I agree with the other poster about "Weirich withdrawal," too! lol

Talk about synchronicity, I was looking at a piece of leftover 4' x 5' vinyl flooring; I noticed the back was of the same material if not similar to the lino carving material we used in H.S. I thought, hmmm I can make designs on that and bingo print up my own logos on bags. For the life of me I couldn't remember what the tools were called that we used. Today in my recommendations this video popped up. So yeah, synchronicity!

Oh, I am so happy you did another stamping/carving video! I am looking forward to making my own stamps, and this seems like a wonderful way, and the items you used looked like it was not that hard...compared to say carving an eraser. The tools looked like they did a good job too! I am also very impressed that this company offers all that for the 50 dollar price. I checked out all the items on Amazon and it all came to just about 46$ before shipping. So they did great! I was curious what was the amount/size of the tubes of paint? When I priced it all, I figured roughly a 1.25 oz tube. If it's more, that's an even better deal. Do you also know if this company sells boxes individually, or only by a minimum amount subscription? I went to their site and found the older boxes up to May, but could not find the specific June box singly for sale. If they did have the lone June box without the commitment, they'd for sure have my business over Amazon! That is a good deal! =) Thanks for so carefully and precisely showing this demonstration, Lindsay! I loved it! =)

A paper recommendation for printmaking: Somerset Printmaking Paper from St Cuthbert's Mill (same folk who make Bockingford and Saunders Waterford watercolour papers) is really nice and great for stamping (it's in my forthcoming paper review) - if you tweet the st Cuthbert's mill folk, they seem pretty happy with sending people a sample pack with a roughly 6"x4" sheet of each of their papers or with 3"x3" pieces of all of their papers - just enough to decide if you like it and they send you all the weights and finishes and colours if you ask nicely. Really nice company to deal with.
