Ivan, out here on the west coast Toyota's somehow end up applying rust inhibitors automatically...usually fine Corinthian 5W30...the newer ones 0W20. :)

Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics I have that same sensor issue at 89k on my 2006 Highlander which caused the engine light and the Vsc light as well ( which got me confused ). The car still running smooth and well. I think the code is P0031 oxygen sensor or something like that

He only bought new part because of peer pressure!! If it weren't for all of the KZread repair techs peeking over his shoulder, there would have been a follow up vid on how to disassemble, repair, and reweld the coil back in!! Oh wait, that was another CAR GUY!!

There's one the internet forums would have gotten right. I love that you kept the plugs and 2 of the coils that were good and didn't shotgun everything.

These are the repairs I dream about! Remove a cover, 2 bolts, wham-bam DONE! Wish they all were like this! I'd be alot less stressed out all day, that's for sure! Good thinking swapping those coils around. Great vid! 👍👍

Smashing job ivan, speedy fix :-D it's so easy to think far too deep and spin around for hours getting nowhere. i've done this quite a few times and i never seem to learn lol. "Swaptronics" i love the name, i will have to remember it :-D It can also apply to the times where you happen to have a decent test part to try, not to be mixed up with Cannon-tronics :-D.

I'm no tech , barely a DIYer, but for peace of mind and the fact they aren't expensive on my and my wife's vehicle, I carry an extra coil pack and a cheap code reader. Nice one Ivan, Keith be proud of you changing out not one but two coil packs, lol Nice video!!!

Still a good case study. The average person would be overwhelmed, I think, with the long list of DTCs. I like the approach of keeping it simple and going to what may be causes, instead of effect codes.

Another thought. In spite of the codes, there are two things that can cause this intermittent but recurrent problem: (1) Large pieces of trash in the fuel tank that get sucked to the pickup, occluding it and starving the engine of fuel; when the engine cuts off, the trash falls to the bottom of the tank until the next time.(This is why it can start back up with no problem.) (2) Small pieces of trash sucked into the fuel filter under certain conditions, cutting off fuel flow. When the engine is off, the trash falls away from the filter, and you can restart it almost immediately. About 40+ years ago, in the days before electronic engine management and codes, I faced a similar problem with an almost new pickup truck a guy had just driven from Alaska to the small town in Virginia, where I was in school. He was a recent Harvard graduate, a dreamer with family money, who knew nothing about his truck or anything mechanical. I asked him if he had run out of gas on the trip and, if so, had he had to use an old gas can to refuel the truck. He had and showed me the can he used and the rotten hose that he had used to pour the fuel from the gas can into the tank. The fuel filter was clogged with pieces of old rubber from the hose. I got him on his way in short order, but often wondered how he had made it all the way from Alaska to Virginia, knowing as little as he did about anything mechanical or practical.

rust/sugar/dirt stirring in the tank or filter and blocking it sucks, only thing that sucks more is when it's a boat and your adrift dead in the speed/skiing area. with the fuel bulb vacuum sucked flat. cleaned the tank, cut the internal filter screen off and added large external filter solved :)

Wow quality parts, I want smell them. so much nicer than off brand junk. Turned out easy with owner usage helping validate the cause , job jobbed ...

Experience as a pre computerisation mechanic makes me think that's a wierd symptom for a single coil fault. I'm guessing that shutdown of all four coils response from the ignition circuit was either a designed safety measure due to the high voltages involved or perhaps the faulty coil managed to overload the control circuitry of all four ? Efficient logic applied for the diag Ivan. Well done and thanks.

They can relabel any model with the oil-burning 2AZ-FE engine in it.

Thank you for your video, they have someone who comes to their house and fixes their car like a doctor. Good job!! Just to let you know those spark plugs had high calcium deposits on them which also adds High Resistance and stresses the coil. Calcium is a byproduct of gasoline combustion. Change all the spark plugs would benefit them greatly. By the way Go Minnesota Vikings!

among other contaminates clinging on and the possibility of internal resistor break down :) I've had cheap-o plugs in the past rust down inside the porcelain, only way I knew it was one of them pulled the wire end electrode out with the wire, I tore the whole set apart and every one was the same. ( auto-lite, cheapest copper plugs from walmart close to 20 years ago) no wonder she had odd misfires.......

When changing out coils or putting in new plugs, should you (or not) spray the inside of the coil with some kind of dielectric, silicone or fluid film? Just asking because I've sometimes done it, not sure if it's a good idea or bad

When do you recommend replacing the coils? The owners manual doesn't say anything about the coils so I would guess its not like a timing e belt or something that get replaced at every 100,000 miles or something like that.

Eh whenever they start to act up I guess. Some coils are lifetime.

As someone doing the same as you are in this video. Retaining a job but going back into private diagnostics. How did you charge for this? 2 call out fees plus repairs? Any discount on the second call out? I appreciate your time Ivan!

In your part of the world the only thing Toyota's fear is dying of rust.

Does that Highlander have A/F ratio sensor(s)? If so, I've fixed cat codes on Toyotas with new O2's and verified the fix with Mode 6 before and after data. The last one I fixed this way was an 04 Sienna with a P0430. Mode 6 data verified it was significantly over the limit. Put two new Denso O2's (from RockAuto, of course) in on bank 2 and ran a drive cycle. Again, verified with Mode 6 data and showed way under the limit after replacement. Haven't seen the car since April.

Good thing it wasn’t a six or you have to take half the top of the engine off! And probably some other dash. I’ve got an 07 Sienna and not looking forward to it someday soon. I just heard you say they pay like Half an hour for one coil shop time, that’s not on that four-cylinder is it?

Doug Foote Not bad, I just replaced 2 coils on my Sienna and one was cylinder #1 which I think is the toughest to get to. I have never taken off the plenum to do spark plugs or coil change outs. Not bad. Do not fret

I'll bet that #3 coil got oil soaked at some time.(note the stain)..The sparkplug tubes fill with engine oil..Bad valve train gasket does that..Has the owner had it replaced at some time.?

I would have replaced the plugs as a preventative measure. They are cheap, easy to get to and won't hurt but only help.

Old school? Pshaw it even has more than one coil! Practically space age technology!

The cat codes will show up in this instance. The catalysts probably are marginal and should be changed out (partially clogged) Coolant temp with a plugged cat will be around 210 or so when the thermostat is 180. Might run smooth but will cause problems later on.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics And the car will run hot and overly rich. In my 98 Contour, the V6 was running 212 degeees (way too hot) and ran very rich before the cats were replaced. After, ran fine.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics No. It is the CD4E. I had the pleasure of changing the trans back in June. Pump shaft snapped in two and the main input shaft snapped. Got a recent rebuilt one and put a ATF cooler on it. Then the alt shorted out, dash cluster diodes blew and shorted the alt circuit out, was overcharging and the pico scope found it.

The exhaust i put on it is the SVT dual exhaust

I have the 2003 Highlander/Fwd. "Check Engine" has been on for 5+ yrs. My service says nothing has failed, just the sensors. ($200/ea) Other owners/same complaint. 7 sensors ... 180k miles !!!!$ Your thoughts? Been good car.

The P1725 is a result of the misfire #3. Sensors NT and NC should have a certain sync. to let the ECM shift gears properly. With the misfire they are out of sync. so the car gets into "limp home" mode.

Toyota had cable throttle in '02. My vw has drive by wire in 02.

P1725 Toyota Code Description: This code is triggered by the sensor in question detecting a discrepancy between the rotation speed of the input turbine and its' counter gear (NC) speed. By comparing the input turbine speed signal (NT) and the counter gear speed sensor signal (NC), the ECM detects the shift timing of the gears and appropriately controls the engine torque and hydraulic pressure in response to various conditions, thus performing smooth gear shifting.

Yes. On the transmission main (or input/front/input turbine) shaft, specially designed grooves (or a notched reluctor wheel) are present. Typically works as described below, but I'm not a Toyota expert, so mileage may vary: The sensor (NT) is positioned near the rear of the torque converter (at the transmission input shaft) and is either mounted with a bolt/stud or threaded directly into the transmission case.

I'm not saying it was aliens......... I'd guess that as has already been discussed, stalling in gear. Additionally, the multiple misfires may have produced results, at least as far as a sensor was concerned, that were similar to stalling in gear, for a split second or so. Maybe. There's always the fun possibility that a transmission issue is gradually making an appearance.

Ivan My guess is a bad connection in the connector.................. nothing to do with the misfire This sensor detects the rotation speed of the input turbine. The signal is input from the turbine rotation speed sensor to the ECM and this signal controls the engine torque and shift timing. Also,according to the engine speed,this controls the lock up.The ECM detects conditions (a), (b), (c) and (d) continuity for 5 secs or more. (1-trip detection logic) (a) Vehicle speed : 50 km/h (20 mph) or more (b) 2nd, 3rd or O/D gear (c) Solenoid valves and neutral start switch are normal (d) NT < 300 rpm

igf and igf signals , some toyota when one igf signal is loss the car doesn't start

Pretty simple experiment!! Swap coils, it would be funny if you repaired it lol. That would make Scotty smile with envious, lol. I don't really see Toyota with repairs. Wow!!!

Yes it is but don't get tricked, Toyota uses the same engine code but when it comes to SUV or van applications they throw a bigger Cam on it to increase the torque and make over for the extra few hundred pounds on the curb wight

dunno why so many mfgs went to individual coil over setups= compactness ? or cost ~? -could not be really better then old "distributor " units - or 4 to 6 or 8 coils in one pack-some 3 cyl mills also !! -(except for arcing and crack over sparks in wet if insulation on wires or boots failed, where the old water spray bottle or SNOW trick worked for me ~) VW notorious for flaky coil overs-Hondas rare-dunno others like Toyota,Mazda etc

Why not change all 4 in the beginning? Its not that expensive

had a 1967 ford the vacuum advance rod cam loose, e clip broke, give it gas rod would short points fusible would melt. I get there it starts, third time decided to drive car for 2 days stalled pulled cap seen clip gone replaced, still wouldn't start! fusible link gave up. replaced, ran fine. no codes/, no computer either

The only problem I have is ivan keeps saying Teyota not Toyota. I hear that a lot here in az from the Mexican folks that cant speak English very well. Lol

P0310 in description... Cylinder number 10 misfire??? Toyots dont break...

Rock Auto is fine for ordering parts but when you get a bad part how do you explain that to the customer that has to work the next day. Highly recommend getting your business license and setting up an account with a few parts houses and you can get shop pricing locally with even better customer service. Always check the gap on the plugs regardless if they look good and for giggles I'll normally drop a scope down the cylinder. To get in the habit test the coils that way when you have a situation your more familiar with the testing of the could using the component tester. I swap also but I still check the coils as you completely verify the tool. Nice Fix! On the parts house deal I al setup where I can see Parts availability with my local Parts House and which location has what amount of that part. I can limb place an order for that part and based on what location has what I can get the part right away or up to an hour later as they have their delivery vehicles running in town during weekdays. I have to go to the main warehouse It's just 15 minutes across town which is about a 7 Mile Drive. Definitely not a long drive like you if I remember you're out on Long Island. I've spent many a days out on Long Island waiting on freight to come back to the Midwest years ago. Like going every now then but don't miss it.

Always use Denso parts if you have a choice. Sure, they can be slightly more expensive but peace of mind is worth a lot when you are driving around late at night in the rain or snow.

The original company (Nippon Denso) was exceptionally high quality back in the days- before anything China existed. They're a HUGE company now. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denso

You need to change catliststic converter

P1725 turbine input speed sensor circuit malfunction (aka NT revolution sensor) enabling criteria greater than 20 mph, in second or high gear sensor reads 300 rpm or less (thoughts: could be symptom of stalling)

Well after what 17 years something finally broke I think that's really good.

Is this the same P.O.S. 4 cylinder as the similar vintage Camry with the too short head bolts that fail resulting in head gasket failure and usually total motor destruction? Just like the Corolla motor with piston rings that frequently fail, bad Prius firmware, automatic transmission failures, V6 engines that throw rods thought the side of the block, and other huge embarrassments, Toyota has had a shocking number of design failures. It appears their choice of coils in this application was yet another mistake. Toyota reliability seems to apply only to pre 2000 vehicles. And if you want something as basic as Android Auto, which pretty much every other manufacture has had for several years, don't buy a Toyota as they still don't have it in any of their vehicles. Basically Toyota largely sucks these days.
