Oh no, far worse than that. Clancy was an optimist on the former soviet Republics, Russia in particular. This shit would have been handled more quietly, a couple unreasonable types on bot sides assassinated by the heroes or some fellow villains turning on each other, thr EU/NATO offer being extended simultaneously to both, some sort of fancy negotiation.

30:35 Fun fact - in the Ukrainian version of the game the Duty is the only faction to be voiced in Russian. No idea why, but I've heard theories that it's because of the association with rigid Soviet army culture (since Freedom is indeed often said to embody the "classically Ukrainian" anarchist sentiment). UPD: Looked it up - Military, Duty and Mercs are all voiced in Russian "intentionally", as stated by the developer. Before 2014 Ukrainians didn't really have a high regard for the army, and thought of it as a Soviet remnant - hence this approach to localization.

Another version which is most likely to be true, is that they forgot to localise Duty or simply didn’t have time/resources to do it. So they just decided to leave it like that. @@fullmaster8211 >Another version which is most likely to be true And yet is completely false. Looked it up and the official description of the localization patch outright states that the Military and Duty are both voiced in Russian "intentionally", since Russian used to be the language of the army (back when the army was unreformed and plagued with Soviet heritage). Funnily enough, Bandits of all factions (who use Soviet prison cant) got new lines by the same actor, so this wasn't the case of translating as little as possible.
@fullmaster8211

@@maxr2743 well, you saying it yourself your version is what creators said officially. Do you think they would tell their customers “guys we were lazy to complete transaction for Duty”? Usually when a fuck up like this happens, you come up with an excuse, which is how their explanation sounds like. I didn’t play the Ukrainian localisation so I don’t know, do bandits speak Ukrainian there? Cause it they do, then it supports my version. Criminal dialect that they use in russian translation doesn’t exist in Ukrainian language. All the criminal culture that Bandits faction represents came from russia during USSR period, so making this faction speaking Ukrainian while Duty speaking russian doesn’t make much sense. I’m not saying that I’m 100% right, but it’s a known fact that GSC were constantly in developmental hell while creating Stalker series. I tend to believe that it was more fuck up on their side than the real decision, cause their explanation has some holes in it

@@fullmaster8211 Bandits in Ukrainian version speak Surzhyk - mixture of russian and Ukrainian, associated with low culture. Interestingly Renegades kept russian voicelines. It would be sick if Scar and some of the more prominent Clear Sky members came back as monolith in the next game. With Shadow of Chernobyl spoiling all the mystery surrounding the Zone itself (it was aaaall the work of crazy scientists with psychic powers) I hope they emphasize the relationship between Stalkers themselves in the plot of STALKER 2 instead of another "fight your way into the center of the Zone" story. Call of Pripyat was very promising to me with how it de-emphasized the combat and set pieces and encouraged you to just wander around and talk to people - you can't even leave the first area without initiating an unmarked quest that involves hanging out with a crazy weirdo hiding in a boat, which you can only discover by exploring or chatting with random NPCs. That's the kind of game design that has me optimistic for the next game.

Late, but as CoP revealed, SoC didn't really spoil anything. With the C-Con gone, the Zone got even more "alive" and would expand to cover the world. AFAIK STALKER 2 will focus on both the new factions relations + solving the mysteries of the Zone which sounds really ambitious. Really excited to see where it leads, when it eventually releases LOL.

Yknow the STALKER purists give the Anomaly devs a lot of shit for some of their changes but I gotta say for the most part the layout of the zone makes way more sense in Anomaly. I only played Clear Sky once and it was years ago but I think I forgot just how disjointed it was, and Shadow of Chernobyl wasn't that much better in that regard. Anomaly does away with setpieces for obvious reasons, and that does kinda lessen certain areas that were specifically designed around scripted events, but it makes much better use of a lot of areas. For example rather than Garbage being a bandit stronghold, in Anomaly the trader is actually a hunter who buys mutant parts and sells specialized hunting gear. This is a great placement as some of the most reliable mutant hunting in the game is around Garbage and its adjacent areas. It actually makes hunting a viable way to make money like searching for artifacts. It's also under the protection of Duty, which makes sense since, yknow, their job is to hunt down bandits. Just in general faction placement in Anomaly is top notch. Having Freedom and Duty next to each other is great, as is having Freedom act as a natural barrier against Monolith (either be friendly with Freedom and buy their much better weaponry, or side with Duty and prepare yourself for the fight against Monolith by killing Freedom on your way).

I think our biggest issue with Anomaly is that its based off of Misery, which is without question the very worst mod. The difficulty of Misery (and by extension Anomaly) isn't the issue, its the addition of unnecessary items that turn the game into a tedious, boring, ugly (why is rust on literally everything? tree's dont rust so why is there rust on the wood of my rifle?) mess. Duty and Freedom as main competing factions/ideas remains a fresh and unique concept to this day. Often in RPG storytelling the dilemma is a boring option of 'the obviously good guys' vs 'the obviously bad guys' who are evil for no other apparent reason than spite and doing it for the lulz. Be it rebels vs. empire, enclave vs the rest etc. It just falls flat and isn't immersive. Whereas 'Duty' and 'Freedom' (with all the alternate meanings of those faction names in original russian) is a much more thought provoking dilemma not just about the zone but life in general and neither can really even be characterized as 'the good' or 'the bad'. Also, good observation about the cultural feedback loop of Russian turbofaithful to the USSR basing their beliefs on American boomer (though not just of Tom Clancy types) perceptions which in turn were based on warm colored Soviet propaganda posters. It's quite a widespread phenomenon. And it feeds itself. The meme of 'authentic Russian sources based on authentic Western sources based on authentic Russian sources based on...' is real.

The stories, while generic, offer a fair bit of entertainment and the lore behind it is, to me, amazing. I can't wait to see what mods the community comes up with before stalker 2 comes out. There’s a side quest to find a “legendary AK-47” in Cordon for a stalker in the neutral base. Had a lot of fun with that rifle. It has high damage and uses either SVD and RPK ammo. In a quest in Red Forest you can find I think 4000 RPK ammo in a tank. But by that point you can get a Thunder S14 which can be upgraded (unlike the AK-47).

This was my very first stalker game that I played when I was 13 years old and the environment kept me loving every single bit of it. I would quite literally fall asleep in my chair sometimes because I would simply stand on a watch tower or sit by a campfire at dusk. To this day I have good memories of how lively the train depot in the garbage was and can't help but be melancholic seeing it again in Anomaly being occupied by at most 6 or 7 people. And fuck me yeah, the game is downright peaceful; in Anomaly, my head is constantly on a swivel trying to avoid getting a surprise bullet or have my ass jumped by lurkers, cats, or worse. Was a joy to see you cover my sweet nostalgia. Also yes, I completed the entire game on "Stalker" difficulty. Yes, I still loved it. To this day people give me strange looks because of it.

Interestingly Clear Sky features time travel device from soviet TV series called Guest from the future. It got me thinking that the main value of ''stalker atmosphere'' for post-soviet players was not survival or general post-apocalypticness but specifically post-apocalyptic Soviet shit like old cars, Soviet architecture, posters, Pripyat. The exclusion zone is a conservation zone of late-Soviet era. Stalkers even use Soviet rubles for some reason. The original game was mostly about the creation and fall of USSR from some point of view. C-Consciousness scientists are essentially bolsheviks and their goals are communist goals (they're rather romanticized sci-fi communists longing for a better tomorrow without greed and conflicts, people who believe in the fantasy of commie-futurism, people who want to create future from Guest from the future or future from Strugatsky's Noon Universe, which is kinda Star Trek but without the Prime Directive). From this point of view stalkers are early post-soviet people with (small) businesses, people like Grigorovich maybe. Thus bandits are kinda 90s post-Soviet bandits. That's why I'm very interested in STALKER 2 -- the original game had musings on post-Soviet 90s, logically STALKER 2 will have to be more about what came next, like Maidan and all that stuff.

So according to your interpretation, the ending of the original game is one where the early post soviet generation kills the stalinist nomenklatura and is clueless after - the - fact about where exactly it is heading? If so that is an interesting reading. I do doubt that STALKER 2 would have that kind of interpretable subtext, it strikes me as a happy coincidence. It would obviously include comments about Ukrainian nationalism, that is 100% sure.

You can actually glitch the game in Shadow of Chernobyl and join Freedom, which is the only way to join any faction in that game. It’s possible to beat the game, but it messes with faction relations so bandits and mercs are friendly, and ecologists and of course duty are hostile.

Fun fact - in Anomaly because they used the same map almost exactly, you can go into the tunnel Strelok destroys in the Red Forest and see how it works. There's just a ton of grenades on the ground with a bunch of red barrels - the scripted sequence sets off the explosives to create the effect and that's kind of it. Not super interesting but still funny that they just kinda used ingame items to do it rather than spawning the explosion effect on its own.

This video and its side discussions of Ukrainian anarchists and the current war has me reflecting on my latest English final. Just months before the war in Ukraine kicked off I was in the last stretch of my English course on rhetoric and activism. Having recently read Black Square, an American journalist's account of then modern Ukraine, my choice of subject for the last paper was Euromaidan. Focusing on the rise of civilian power, and the extremely rapid and organized mobilization of protestors as well as support structures for them, I said "These were aspects of its (Ukraine's) historic national character waiting to be unearthed and used for a movement like Euromaidan." In that paragraph the main example of historic national character I spoke of was the anarchist movement. Not long after that semester the same force of civilian power was turned towards a new and unfortunately much more traditional war. I think I got a C+.

I don’t much enjoy Sseth, don’t enjoy the way he edits and I am put off by the edgy humor, personal preference really - the games he reviews, though, the man has good taste. He reviewed Caves of Qud, one of the most interesting games I’ve ever played. Mandalore on the other hand I quite love, his recent Marathon videos, wow, just wow. But really, out of the three of them, I like Warlockracy the best, just the way he paces everything, his theory background, I haven’t seen that many gaming KZreadrs reference Nick Land or even Slavoj Zizek.

Still, the average American has the memory of a goldfish and as long as Hollywood keeps making evil Russian movies, you know whose side you're on. Clowns 😅

I love the stalker series, I love the setting, factions, the stories but most of all the community. It radiates this energy of mystery, but also something familiar. The factions are believable, they aren't some wacky Hyperborea-type esoteric schizophrenic boogaloo (excluding monolith) and you can really see and understand what they're about. The stories, while generic, offer a fair bit of entertainment and the lore behind it is, to me, amazing. I can't wait to see what mods the community comes up with before stalker 2 comes out. He inspired me to try out Stalker at a young age and to me at the time, it was the best thing since sliced bread. The CoD-like roleplaying game of my dreams.
Two small things not touched in the video that are interesting: - You can actually find Scar's Vintorez from the intro in the swamp, although it's completely broken and has to be repaired - This was the first Stalker game to have combat music; Shadow of Chernobyl had some very action-y music composed by the band FireLake (the tracks Fighting Unkown and Against the Ionized Odds), but as far as I can't tell, they were never used despite being associated with the soundtrack; it's quite good and weirdly fits, but there's only three tracks so they get repetitive

You can actually glitch the game in Shadow of Chernobyl and join Freedom, which is the only way to join any faction in that game. It’s possible to beat the game, but it messes with faction relations so bandits and mercs are friendly, and ecologists and of course duty are hostile.

But at least i got Anomaly to scratch that very specific itch to visit the swamps (actually one of my fave areas in CS despite it being what it is).
Glad to hear you alive and well.

I think the lack of "credible" citation killed your grade. Unfortunate, but its reality Patterns of the past are still relevant now. For example, my country Indonesia has always existed with a center ruling by proxy of local nobles/oligarchs, this applies to Majapahit, Dutch East Indies and modern Indonesia. There are 39 years of 2 dictatorships trying to fight this norm, they fail to hold it Downsides of this, is that unlike Ukraine. The weakness of a government is non existent politically when the local lords have their share of power and wealth
I love your style of videos. Really happy to see you reviewing my first introduction to the Stalker series.
Absolute king for making this one
There *is* Ukrainian VO, for each faction except Duty. Duty is supposed to be a sort of post-Soviet veteran group, red is one of their colors. Freedom has a tryzub on their patch, plus a Ukrainian flag. The commentary is quite interesting. I wonder how, comparing STALKER from SoC to 2 will measure Ukrainian society's evolution away from Moscow. I always play STALKER on Ukrainian VO for practice.

@@Warlockracy That might certainly be. Since I always mod it in. I had assumed it was a Ukraine release only thing, but that may not be the case. They are mostly the same voice actors though, which is why I had thought that. Edit: Do any of the Russian VOs have Ukrainian accents? I can tell that many are native Ukrainian speakers, because they speak very good Ukrainian when they do the Ukrainian VO, but idk if the accent comes through with the Russian since I only speak Russian.
no way my favorite KZreadr and my favorite series!!!!
Hey the shot of the Clear sky by the end was pretty cool. You have a great sense of theatrics man, great video as always.
thank you for doing these kinds of vids, fun to hear your take on the game and see the snippets of things you find that inspired game stuff irl, fun and informative :D
Makes my day whenever you upload, brother.
You're like Civvie for game genres liked by East European/Russian parts of the internet. Keep up the good work, such genres rarely get any coverage, let alone a decent one. P.S. - Any essential mods for Clear Sky to reduce frustrating parts?
Glad you’re continuing with the stalker games, it’s one of my favorite series. Might I suggest you cover some of the standalone mods as well? Wind of Time and Lost Alpha:DC are some of my favorites, there’s a few more that are worth playing but idk about reviewing. It’s always interesting to hear what you have to say about these games/mods, you have a unique way of reviewing them that I haven’t seen anyone else do. I’ve rewatched the Morrowind series 2 times now, it’s one of my favorite things to watch when I’m winding down for the day. Anyways, thanks for the hours of entertainment, looking forward to seeing your experience with Call of Pripyat and Fallout: Nevada.
Keep it coming my dude, you make it way cooler to watch you talk about these games than if I played them myself. I have no idea how you do it
I never thought about the Freedom faction being a reference to Makhnovshchina...huh...
The most terrifying and broken part of this game was the Monoliths. Everytime I hear a Slavic man yell "Grenade" I breakdown crying and screaming... I can hear them in my head yelling "Grenado!" Every 5 seconds and popping out of existence and killing me instantly with a VS Val... Even with a fully upgraded Exoskeleton they didn't care.

Fun detali - you can find Scar's signature gun around the 2 train wagons where the first cutscene took place. Gun is on the ground, in a bad condition and you can't get more ammon for it anytime soon. Unless I'm just delusional, or ir was added in the Complete mod.

Shooting crows was like the nightmare, it was so hard but money was to tempting. I did it once for the highest bid. Totally wasn't worth the time :D
I know it was a COD thing, but "Surprise final boss helicopter" always takes me back to one of the early games of my own childhood. Playing an old copy of Bionic Commando. Possibly the first game where you ever got to kill Hitler now that I think about it. Final Boss is an out of nowhere Helicopter flown by Hitler. With just one shot to snap off a bazooka round to blow him up.

I just want to say this was the first video that I saw when I came home from work today and it really made my day! Clear Sky gets some flak, that is for the most part deserved, but I can't help, but love it due to all the character it injected into the Zone.
Totally from nowhere, I was thinking again of Jagged Alliance. That's totally the kind of game for a Warlockcracy video.
Appreciated the political insertions. It takes balls to antagonise part of your present and potential subscribers like that. Shows integrity.
Steve Blum putting on a bad Russian accent is something that brings great joy to my life.
i love all the random information i end up learning from this channel
Thank you very much for a great video and commentary, keep up the good work!
One thing that I don't get about online Russians saying Ukrainians are "Polish slaves" is that I have barely seen any of that directed towards Belarusians, are people that would be classified as "Polish slaves" that reside in Belarus simply classified as "ukrainians" to those forum-goblins? I thoroughly enjoy the "cultural interpration" parts of your videos, somehow very natural tangents that are genuinely interesting.

They're just salty because Ukrainians and the Western world portray us as bad guys, even if no one here has any power over Putin's government. And when everyone hates you, it's easier to buy into Putin's propaganda that says we're actually heroes and the West is evil. Before the war, most of us didn't even believe it would even happen. I'm not saying that here was no racism towards Ukrainians, but it's never been as bad as it is now. Most of it was just edgy jokes really. And the Ukrainians have always responded in a similar manner
When the first Stalker came out my PC barely could run it. It was the high water mark for my first PC and it always makes me both sad that it couldn't run it and happy because now I think my smart fridge can run it with a bunch of mods.

@Socucius Ergalla it's not that simple unfortunately, in the garbagr for example you have to kill bandits in guard positions even if they are out of where they should which releases a trigger that causes your faction to advance
@Mr.Sylky0
Жыл бұрын
@Socucius Ergalla sometimes a character lost from the group is enough to not activate the trigger, which happens a lot because when you capture a command post another enemy post is divided into multiple patrols to send a counterattack and not all arrive, some are lost due to mutant attacks. You have to go get all the missing patrols to activate the trigger
