Staking Dahlias and Trees 🌸🌳 You Will Love How We are Supporting Our Garden!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Thanks for growing with us!
Today we are talking all about plant supports. First we need to create a way to support the dahlias that Christopher grew from seed. We have devised a method of using beautiful Jardin Stakes from @gardenerssupply and jute twine to make our own version of a hortinova netting. Putting the stakes together is a breeze and once we get them in the ground it is just a matter of stretching the twine from stake to stake. This will keep the dahlias supported but also look great.

We are also working on trees today. The Tickle Creek Birch from @iselinursery5169 needs a quick adjustment to its stake. After that we are going to take a look around at some of the plant supports we have had great success with. These supports and so much more can be found here:

Lastly we need to get our Princeton Sentry Ginko tree staked. The west wind has pushed It over and it just looks silly. Using an 8 ft stake we are supporting proper upright growth and the tree looks better immediately!

You gentlemen are genius! That looks so much better than the flower factory look most gardeners end up with, and you would never have in your garden. A very ingenious method of keeping flowers secure. May I make a small suggestion. Next time black twine might disappear a bit better than green.

I love watching you two work together! Your dahlia stakes are so pretty - that space will be gorgeous when the dahlias are in bloom. I also appreciate you pointing out your pests (rabbits & Japanese beetles) ... we all have them!

I had black twine in my hand at the store and put it back...because it was twice the price. It wasn't even that expensive either. haha
I agree with the green twine color. Maybe just do black bamboo stakes and black twine. I love the maintenance videos bc it’s reality and encouraging for what 90% of gardening really is.

A couple of funny guys. 😆 I really like those whimsical stakes. I don't have plants that need them, but just as a decorative element, I might have to get some. I have the Jardineer half hoops to support peonies and perennials. (I now have 13 peonies! My favorite.) Say, I haven't seen Japanese beetles in my garden this year (Minneapolis ).🤞🏼 Hoping they've moved to another address. Course, it could be because my DA 'Queen of Sweden' roses may have succumbed to our crazy climate. They never seem interested in my traditional shrub roses, 'Therese Bugnet'.

The beetles are arriving in our garden. We have a neighbor that put out the beetle bags so we are hoping most of them fly over there
@Edu_Kate
17 сағат бұрын
@@growformegardening Oh no! I've heard 🚫 to use those bags because they draw the Japanese beetles to your area. I think they can fly at least a mile. Better to deal w/ them as grubs. Treat lawn.

I hope you were able to avoid the worst of the storm
Gentlemen, Two comments:1) the ugly color of the twine will be bleached out very quickly ( you can also take the unbelievable time to apply hydrogen peroxide to "bleach" it) & 2) you will be so chuffed with yourselves that you did this before the summer gets to" jungle phase" and you have to wade into your precious dahlias to the tune of cracking stems. Also, you may never get to this point but, _the ends of twine sometimes "disappear" clinging somewhere in the abyss of eager foliage. Pulling on said twine usually results in the guillotine you hoped to avoid... Good luck and thanks for the video. Excellent as usual! 👍
@growformegardening

Well this is good news. Bleach away!
I see what you’re trying to achieve, but perhaps the netting would disappear once the plant leaves grow in and everything gets camouflaged., and an easier project. 💚 your space, beautiful gardening🌸

If the area was square I definitely would have gone that way. It just an awkward curve.
Great job with the supports! Love the pink clematis! I'm growing honey nut butternut and cucumbers on the arch on my 2x8 elevated bed. The bunnies (and groundhog) have been munching on my dahlias and I can't bring myself to stop them lol Your bunny looks like a baby, so I hope you let him be!

“Team work makes the tree work.” 😂 Can you provide a link or tell us how to get the 8’ stake you used for that ginko? It looks sturdy but easy to remove. We have trees that a previous owner staked with anchored t posts. The not so pretty posts are now impossible to remove because the roots have grown over the anchor. I don’t want to repeat that mistake when I plant new ones!

I think Dahlias are pretty, but the staking thing is so ugly to me. I love watching other gardeners do the work hehe. It's the twine for me. But those stakes are pretty. I would use those instead of the ones plants come in.
