Our Steps
1. Select top quality boards to finish
2. Lightly sand the boards with 150 grit, not too much.
3. Remove the sanding dust
3a. Apply pre-stain conditioner if you are staining Pine
4. Apply your stain using a foam brush in nice even strokes.
5. Allow to dry (don't rush it)
6. Lightly sand again with the same grit as step 2
7. Remove sawdust
8. Apply 2nd coat of stain with the foam brush as before.
9. Let it dry and lightly sand
10. Apply your polyurethane top coat, add 3 or more coats sanding lightly in between each coat.

Thanks for the post. When I refinished my interior stairs, I did a light sand between poly coast. I did 3 coats of poly but sanded between the 1st and 2nd coats. Is only 1 coat of poly good enough? I assume it would effect the way the board works, in that bean bags will slide the hell off more often if more poly layers are added! lol.

I would do several coats, I sprayed my finish so its hard to say how many coats you will need. Best to apply and try it out.

@Matt Hickman Matt, this is great video (very informative). I have a question about stain compatibility, was hoping I could get your quick thoughts. I plan on doing a relatively simple board. It will have a painted boarder around the entire board. The "middle"/"center" (area between boarder) will be stained (I will add a decal also over a portion of the stained board). Can I put a water based sealer (e.g. Minwax Polycrylic or Varathane Water Based Polyurethane) over an oil based stain (regular or gel). Assuming I let the stain dry thoroughly. My reasoning was to use a gel stain (oil) to give a clean line/edge (no seep/bleed under the frog tape) and a water based sealer to give a clearer look (avoiding the "yellow"/"amber" color that an oil based sealer often provides). BTW, I'm using 3/4" Baltic birch.

Hey. As long as you let it dry all the way. You should be good with the water based poly on the gel stain.

Very informative video, thanks! I would like to use the water based exterior house stain we used on the singles of our house. Do you see any issues with that type of stain? Would it still need a coat of poly? I'm thinking the poly would make for a smoother finish.

  • @SimpleWoodShop

Sand away the top layer beat you can. Maybe put some water on the top (lightly) and see if it soaks in a little. That’s how you know the poly is gone. Might be easier to just unscrew the top and stain the other side that doesn’t have any finish on it.

Hey Joe, That is usually the best way. It saves the hassle of moving full sets around to dry. I set up my drying area for tops only so the rack will only fit tops. That is the way I did my setup. Other do it differently as well. Do you stain a lot of boards?

Hi there! Can I use an oil base stain on pine? Also if I did a stencil design on it with tape, will the oil bleed through? Thanks so much!

  • @SimpleWoodShop

Hi. Oil is just fine on pine. Let it fully dry before you put your polyurethane on. I would apply it in lighter coats to avoid it bleeding. You can always test it ion the underside. If you plan to pain the whole top it would be good to prime with a good primer before the paint. This will help block the oils in the pine from coming up.

I’m using a maple top and wanting to stain down the middle and paint on the left and right of the hole. Do I need to use pre stain on the part I’m going to stain? Also my paint is enamel satin- do I need to prime the painted areas? Thank you.

Hi, I have not had experience staining maple. You might try it on the underside first to see if you like it or not. I would try the pre-stain and primer too.

Would it be ok to STAIN my board first and then tape near the edges for to paint afterwords?

  • @SimpleWoodShop

    @SimpleWoodShop

    3 жыл бұрын

Sure. You can stain then paint over the parts you want. That would be ok. The stain will seep into the wood and the paint will go on top. If you want crisp stain lines use frog tape and gel stain. Not regular stain.

Hey Karen, You can wipe the stain once you apply it on the boards if you would like to. The longer you leave the stain on the abords the darker it will be. It is a personal preference. Just let it dry completely.
