    The value you pack into these videos is unreal. Excellent work. There is nowhere else I've seen on KZread that delivers this much information so succinctly.

    I cannot thank you enough for how helpful your videos have been as I've worked on updating our 120 year old farmhouse! I've been watching every "deck stain" video I can find and yours is the most helpful. Your pros and cons helps to make the best choice for our situation and goals. Thank you!!

    Agree, their videos are great. I few months ago I started repainting some rooms of my house that we built in 2007. Needed to buy a new front door handle set and decided to go with oil rubbed bronze instead of the silver nickel original and ended up buying new doorknobs for the whole house to match. Then I decided the white doors were nice but after 14 years I thought about black... so I went to Sherwin Williams and picked tricorn black and got a gallon of their urethane trim enamel . Came home and said I hope I made the right choice and decided to KZread tricorn black and guess who uploaded a video on tricorn black the very same day! This guy! Haha 😂 immediately felt good about my decision and away I went, but I’ve watched a lot of their videos now and I’m hooked

    You are the only one who talks about stain peeling. I had a painter is a semi solid stain to my deck. Two years later it began to peel. Prior to that I had a semi transparent stain. It never peeled so I had to do was clean the deck before restaining. To restain my deck, I have to sand the old stain before restaining. A big thanks for this video.

    Just this past week we had our deck boards replaced and I get to do the staining. So I was very happy to come across my favorite paint person. Our deck is on the south side of the house and gets 8-9 hours of direct sunlight. We also live in Georgia where the summers are hot and muggy so I need to get going before the blast furnace starts. Glad to have advice from James. 👍

    So glad I came across this video! I purchased a new home that is cedar shake sided. It is currently stained a very dark green, and needs to be redone. Would it be fair to say a solid stain like BM Arborcoat could be applied on top, in a lighter color like a light gray?

    finally one person on the interweb that bothers to explain the subject in depth. nothing i hate more than someone making a 30 min video telling you how easy it is but only explains anything in about 5 mins of it. they don't bother to tell you which paints are best for the project a latex or flat, they don't tell you about the stain is it an oil based or.... they say stuff like top coat but don't tell you what they used, or what general type works best for the application. it's always a waste of 30 mins and half the time they don't even leave product links so you're left guessing.

    A related question; is it really necessary to use Benjamin Moore's Brighten on NEW yellow pine plywood or is sanding with 80 grit sand paper sufficient?

    Hi James. Loved this video. Very useful information as we are looking into changing the colour of our garden woodwork. Currently dark brown and would like lighter. Have you any tips for us. Thank you. Great to see a channel that includes us basic DIY people.

  • @thepaintpeople

    @thepaintpeople

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Mary! First of all, I can assure you that you're anything but 'basic'. :) There are a lot of things to consider when refinishing woodwork, especially going from dark to light. In most cases, you'll need to remove the pre-existing finish that's on there now. The standard process is to clean the surface, and power sand the polyurethane finish off (and some of the dark stain if you can). You could also try a stripping solvent to remove the dark stain, just make sure you use gloves and a respirator. Once you get that dark stain off, you'll be back at square one with the wood, and will then be able to apply a lighter semi-transparent finish. An easier solution is to use a lighter solid stain instead. They work similarly to paint, so if you're not worried about seeing the woodgrain, go with that. Although I would still recommend a good cleaning and some sanding, but you wouldn't need to remove all of the visible dark stain, as the newer light solid stain will do a better job with concealment. All the best!

    Quick question what finish would you recommend on exterior wood. Pine Wood on a homes Roof Trimmings I live in the Midwest. We get horrible cold it in winter, bad humidity & heat in the summer. What is the best product on the market for me to use? I want it to last as long as possible and give me max protection. What is the #1 product for this type of project? A bit off topic from this video but I might as well ask since its in the same ball park. How about stain product? Client is looking to go with a Black Walnut Stain Color. I've been looking into ExoShield which is a Tung Oil its $125 a gallon and claims to have the best protection. "Best Protection from UV & moisture" is what they claim.

    I want to know why deck owners do not spray all of the framing before laying the deck boards? I built my framing and let it dry out over 7 months. I will stain it, followed by the bottoms of the deck boards prior to laying the decking.

    @@roypoulos1378 you can test it as time passes. Take a little bit of stain and see if it gets sucked into the wood or if it just puddles. In my experience, so long as it gets a good month of heat and sunlight it is ready to seal

    Solid stains protect the wood from UV, but at a price... the UV destroys the stain in 2 years if you have sun exposure to any degree. Expect peeling, chipping and all the rest if you have half a day of sun or more... just my experience
