Stags' Leap 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon & Stag's Leap 2018 Artemis US Cab Sauv Premium Wine Review

This review is a result of a poll result wherein my viewers wanted me to review Stags' Leap 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon. One of my subscribers brought it to my attention that there are 2 Stags Leap wines so I decided to also review the Stag's Leap 2018 Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon as well.
Both wineries are situated in the Stags Leap wine region. The region is named after the popular local legend that in this region stags (male deer) eluded hunters by leaping across the regions landmark peaks or that they decided to jump to their death instead of being captured/killed by hunters
Stags' Leap Winery has its origins back to 1893 when it first wines where produced (although under different ownership and probably under a different name). The modern history of the winery started in 1970 when Carl Doumani purchased a part of the estate. The winery was eventually sold to Beringer in 1996 and now belongs to Treasury Wine Estates (who bought Beringer). The 2017 vintage is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon 4% Merlot, 3.5% Malbec and 1.5% Petit Verdot. It is aged in 100% French oak for 20 months (37% new oak).
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was established also in 1970 by Warren Winiarski. In 2007 the winery was sold to Chateau Ste Michelle & Marchesi Antinori. Their wines are described as an iron fist in a velvet glove. Their famous SLV wine was first produced in 1972 and the 1973 vintage was used in the Judgment of Paris competition. After the success of Judgment of Paris competition, everyone was buying their wine but they felt that some people were confused between the 2 wineries. So Stag's Leap Wine Cellars sued Stag's Leap Winery to force them to change their name (I guess previously both wines used "Stags Leap" on their label). The courts decided that since both were established wineries and both had come out at the same time, it wouldn't be fair to have only 1 Stags Leap. So they decided that one winery would be called Stag's Leap and the other Stags' Leap. Didn't clear up the confusion as I think most people think they are the same winery.
The Stag's Leap Wine Cellars 2018 Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. It is aged in both American and French oak for 15 month (40% new oak).Artemis was first produced in 2001 and is named after the Greek goddess of the hunt.
Stags' Leap 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon sells for $57.99 while Stags' Leap 2018 Artemis sells for $86.99

Great wines from the first Napa AVA and review I agree with your thoughts here Artemis needs time (my 2014’s drink great!!) another discussion regarding Stags Leaps brings us to Trademark just a ken to To Kolan…. Both “Stags Leap AVA” wineries became friends and ended their lawsuit preserving their wines reputations (1986) but later joined forces to lobby against having the AVA of Stags Leap created (1989). I think this gives a good insight to what happens in To Kolan. The creation of the AVA for the wineries waters down their reputation. In 2016 “Stags Leap Wine Cellars” came after “The Stag” from treasury wine estates a Australian wine because they wanted sell in the U.S market with the name. Here is a quote from the case …. “We believe (Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and Ste. Michelle Wine Estates) are not trying to protect the Stags Leap District, but instead are trying to use the legal system to stifle lawful competition,” according to the statement. Def some legal trademark education to take away from here as it relates to the BS IMO that happed in To Kalon and shows what happens. Behind all beautiful wine there is a ugly business sometimes. Sorry to turn that so dark but felt it’s important to discuss and mention nobody wants to here this side of things although I’m sure your aware and did mention it.

Wyatt: thanks for the insight. No, I was not aware but perhaps because no one talks about this. Yes, we have to understand that aside from the production of wine, there is another side which is the marketing of the wine and there is big money floating around. I was alerted to the name by another subscriber and now that you have alerted me to this, I will do some more research for myself as most of the stuff I have read does make it sound like the 2 wineries cooperated to get the AVA promoted and it is was all positive. Gives me some food for thought and something I need to learn more about.. Thanks!

Both really good, and at the Wall To Wall tasting, we had it alongside the Penfold's Grange. I have watched your video with great intrest! The story of the legal battle is of course not new. It shows once again that the wine industry is also concerned with power, money and market share etc. You would almost forget, in this example, that good wine is also being made. We often see the industry as far too romantic. You can conclude that, and that is how the wine industry likes it! It is good to think about that. As far as the wines are concerned. You already indicate it yourself. They are actually both too young, but certainly the Stag's Leap Artemis 2018. With its solid tannins. Aerating remains an emergency handle. It may soften the wine a little, but it can also dry out the wine and make it more angular. For balance, harmony, depth, richness, complexity, drinking, this type of wine still requires a long bottle maturation. Difficult in a world where people have little patience. However, patience is amply rewarded! Nevertheless, well that you show this to the viewers. They must also experience this for themselves. But the message may be best, try and some bottles in the wine cellar. In other words you say that. You can also focus on the right wine/food combination with these kinds of tough wines. And that in combination with a spacious Burgundy glass. Then you can also aerate the wine a little less. All this works wonders if you want to drink a young Trophy Wine Hunter wine. But i don't tell you anything new with this. Trophy Wine Hunter, an inspiring wine tasting!

Marcus: thanks for your continued support. I try to bring a perspective I don't see with other youtube channels. I searched and couldn't find anyone who mentions this difference in the 2 labels in any meaningful way. No one wants to bring up anything negative but actually, I don't find it negative. It is just business. I am also curious when I see people review young wines and they can smell and taste so many aromas and flavors, including secondary and tertiary without aeration. Maybe they are super tasters or Masters of Wine but I try to take it from a perspective of a consumer. I do think it is important not to dramatize the experience as I am not here to sell wines...I am here to try to let people know, if they choose to open a wine young, what to expect. Too many people experience through reading others reviews and not through tasting. Ultimately, it does matter what anyone else, including me, think or experiences as wine is a personal experience and only you can know what you like and what wines best you. I hope that I can encourage others to taste the same wines I review and hopefully, my review gives them an accurate description of what they will experience. At minimum, they will have a little history about the winery, which I think enhances the tasting experience as you know the philosophy and something about what makes the wine unique.Cheers!

I think it’s worth pointing out that Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars S.L.V. was not only featured at the 76’ Judgement of Paris wine tasting but it won the red category outright (the Château Montelena Chardonnay winning the white - and for which the movie “Bottle Shock” was made about). It really makes it a winery of extreme significance: Red Wines of the 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting: Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973, Napa Valley (127.5) Château Mouton-Rothschild 1970 (126) Château Haut-Brion 1970 (125.5) Château Montrose 1970 (122) Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon ’Mountain Range’ (Montebello) 1971, Santa Cruz Mts. (105.5) Château Leoville-Las-Cases 1971 (97) Mayacamas 1971, Napa Valley/Mayacamas Mts. Chris: thank you for viewing my video and your comment. Yes you are correct. It won the competition but it is almost impossible to find that wine today and not even sure how it is drinking today. The point I was making in the video is that blind tastings like this are very hard to interpret. Don't know about Napa but 1971 was a terrible vintage for Bordeaux so not surprised by Leoville Las Cases' placing. 1970 was one of the most tannic vintages for Bordeaux and 1970 Montrose is now probably ready to drink (would probably win the competition if it were held with these same wines today since it would be the only one with the tannin level to easy survive for 50 years). I will do a video in the future on blind tastings but if you have enough wine knowledge, I can almost skew any blind tasting to get the desired result. I can also change factors that would make it almost impossible for someone to get the wines correct on a blind tasting. Having said that, the significance to me of the Judgment of Paris is that Napa challenged Bordeaux and won. Many Bordeaux wineries where resting on the laurels and not making very good wines in the 1970-1980s and I think the increase in quality for Bordeaux wines in the 1990s can be largely attributed to increased competition and wine knowledge. Please like and keep watching. Cheers!

Eyes of Ascension: thank you for viewing my video and your comment. I agree, theoretically, you should not choose a wine based on the label. But practically speaking, I must admit, I do get swayed by awesome bottling and if it is going to cost me a few more bucks I am fine. I also have to look at my audience. The majority of the people I drink with are not hardcore wine enthusiasts so spectacular bottling will get their attention. You have to drink to your audience, at least if you are drinking in a business setting. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!
