John, this is so cool! I've really been giving Stage Traxx a lot of attention since I saw Scott Uhl's videos. Multitracker definitely outshines ST3 for playing tracks, but you're totally right about the lyrics. I bet with this setup you're even still able to run the lights using the midi track in Multitracker! One of the downsides I see is that you're limited to 127 (128?) songs.

  • @CaliforniaCreedence

Yes, but needing that many songs is not really a Casino, Concert Series or other organized show. However, you are absolutely right, that is a limitation. I am not sure how often full bands use Stage traxx 3. Yes! We run lights with MT. It is the best! Using ST3 for lyrics is a very cool option.

@Riffman42 That would definitely solve the limitation of 128 programs! I am not sure how ST3 would communicate that, but I am sure ST3 could transmit it with the right syntax.

@Riffman42 I see I'm not the only one with this question. How to get around the 128 limit? I am a one man show and I play in so many different situations that I far exceed 128 songs in my repertoire. There has to be a way to write the MSB & LSB into the Stage Traxx command and have multitracker see it as a sort of "bank change". Then you could create multiple banks of 128 songs. According to the ST3 manual, the following command sends bank change 2, PC20 to MIDI channel 2... PC20.2@2 . Just need to figure out how to get Multitracker to understand it. UPDATE: Figured it out. Here's the command: [midi@00:01.00: PC0.001@1] The 001 is the LSB bank change (or 002 or 003, etc.). To get Multitracker to understand it, in the MIDI PrgCh Assignments, choose the song you want the command to trigger, then press learn. Then go into Stage Traxx and start the song. Multitracker will learn the command and then you add it to your PC list. Each LSB gives you another 128 PCs, therefore, another 128 songs. It works for me, I hope it helps anyone else needing this trick.

John, that's awesome. I'm wanting to change Helix guitar presets via midi during the songs (i.e lead breaks etc...). It looks like MultiTracker can only do start/stop and initial command when loading a song to nominate a Helix Preset (please correct me if I'm wrong mate, I jsut can't see that functionaity in teh manual). With your approach in the video, could the Stage Traxx send the guitar processor changes through it's midi lyrics functionality. Seems like a massive amount of work but would be awesome when all running properly.

Thanks for the encouragement Mike. It's true that it is cumbersome. Yes, in this case you could embed the patch change in ST3 lyrics per song in my paradigm here. MT can run a midi lane with patch change data recorded in your DAW or Cubasis and dropped into MT. While I have not done that, other users of MT state that they have successfully recorded patch changes via MIDI and dropped it in a lane in MT. However, I would test it first. ST3 is perfect, except for the lack of a MIDI lane and limited audio routing. I am sure later versions of ST3 will overcome this. For now, we have to hang on to MT.

Hi John. One question: Why do you put the start timing at 1 second in the program change? Can I put it at 0 or something very close like this [midi@00:0.1: PC1@1] ? Because if I don't want to use Multitracker, the lyrics is going to be delayed 1 second, right?

  • @CaliforniaCreedence

    10 ай бұрын

I can’t remember why I put in the 1 second delay, maybe because it was an easy number just to plug in as opposed to a millisecond, but on you or second question, I have to say that as really like using the 4Pockets app called Surface where you can literally build your own MIDI triggering machine to however you want on your iPhone. It is so easy. Then use BT MIDI pointed to your iPads. The nice thing about Surface by 4Pockets is that you can trigger more than one iPad for different things, or trigger them simultaneously. It is a great app! Thanks for the questions! I was more excited about the ST3 lyric app than our singer. She does not like automation controlling her lyrics, and she likes to look ahead to an upcoming song with her own lyrics. So we are back to square 1. I thought lyrics scrolling would be helpful for her. Nevertheless, she got a second audition for The Voice, so I guess her mind is along that line (no iPads on stage with those singers LOL!).

@@sorokabaville Thanks for the encouragement! A free way around Surface from 4Pockets would be how I used to do things was with MIDI Studio app (basic version) and use midimittr as the MIDI bridge between your iPhone and iPads. Both MIDI Studio and midimittr work with the iPhone and iPad. It is easy to link MIDI Studio with other iPads when you have MIDI studio and midimittr together on your iPhone. I only got surface because (for 8 American dollars) it had significantly more power, which opened possibilities for expansion of automation. Still, I used MIDI Studio/Midimttr on stage from 2014 to 2022 without a hitch. I just needed more options to manage hardware effects, keyboard program changes settings and all kinds of other stuff via BT. Try those free apps and see if it is a good fit before going with Surface.

I am trying to coordinate a light show (chauvet foot c-2 controller and an assortment of ADJ and chauvet lights) to my backing tracks. Hi Steve! I use the app Photon2 for iPad to run my DMX lighting. The MIDI lanes in MT and the flexible outputs are the barriers to me using ST3, even though I bought ST3 and tried to make it work. Yes, I have a video on how to set and deploy a dmx light show that is completely automated. I use the chauvet AN2 node to get the dmx signal from MT to the lights. Plus I use Donner wireless dmx instead of a bunch of cords. I will paste my video after this posted response. ST3 is a great program, but it seems more for the bar and grill, restaurant or pub performers and not a scripted show. MT midi lanes route to Photon2 which connects to my router which connects to my AN2 which sends all DMX to the lights. Its glorious. MT doesnt bat an eye when handling all of it. I'll post my link below.

There are a couple of issues here. One is whether the apps are on different iPads or the same iPad. Also, did you make a basic R/L track of each song for ST3 to run muted, so that the length and start of songs in each app match? The key to making this work is to set up Multitracker to launch songs via program number. This is set up in the settings>MIDI program change assignments. After you have assigned songs to program change numbers in Multitracker, you load and mute the R/L single track songs into ST3 with the program change midi code at the beginning of the lyrics in ST3. To get 2 iPads to talk to one another, I believe you can accomplish this through the use of midimittr. There is a lot of work involved in this setup initially, however, if you are a working band, it may be worth it. After setting this up, our singer prefers a sense of control over lyrics as opposed to scrolling so she can look ahead to the next song etc. So she was not into it (sadly).

Thanks for the question! (Sorry it's long). It has to do with the limitations of ST3. Firstly, regarding specific MIDI lanes for DMX (ST3 has MIDI, but no dedicated lane), and secondly, limitations to a maximum of 8 multi tracks/outputs. Scott Uhl shared that needing more than 8 tracks seems ridiculous (understandable for solo or duo artists), however, as with cheap/free versions of Ableton, the 8 track limit of Ableton Lite is only to whet the appetite for more functional versions without the 8 track limitation. 8 audio multi tracks is not a preference for performing bands, which is why they choose (like we do) to purchase the more expensive Ableton Standard. Multitracker allows as many audio and MIDI tracks as you want which you can route to unlimited output configurations per song. Too many options for some folks, understandably, and takes a lot of work to set up, but once set up, venues like the flexibility of multiple mixing options. We pair Multitracker with what is called a "split system" for venues. They enjoy it. ST3 is an extremely awesome app, but the limitations are too significant for our band. Thankfully, Multitracker is going to be completely revamped by fall of this year with the excellent features in ST3 while retaining the Professionalism of an Ableton Standard-like performance ability that exists in Multitracker. Thanks for asking Andrew! ST3 is an excellent app, which is why it sells so well and retains such a high rating.
