About Our Discussions: At Chronic Love, in collaboration with our generous featured guests, we share candid discussions about living with chronic illness with the intention of showing the humanity, the wholeness of life impacted by chronic disease and chronic conditions. We hope that these conversations can offer a needed counterpoint to the often sterile portrayals of illness and treatment in the service of helping those living with illness to feel less alone; to offer supportive others a lens through which they may more sensitively meet the needs of their fellow humans with illness; and to raise awareness, curiosity, critical thought, and contemplations of change as we lean into issues that impose further hardship on humans living with illness.

Well there were times when I just wanted to die because of the pain I had in so many ways. But I knew that I couldn’t give up because I had eight kids to raise and so God got me through everyday and I’m a fighter and I’m 69 years old and I’m still here fighting With Melanoma. But my advice to all of you going through this . Please Believe! Because even though you are so sick and so tired and trying to be a parent or etc. Don’t give up and just remember Prayer 🙏

Thank you! In my journey I have had a lot of success with the medications given to me as they have worked longer than expected. The most recent one just stopped and they are trying to figure out what to do but they first have to get the results of the most recent biopsy I had. I'm a firm believer in prayer and a good attitude. What is surprised me most is it sometimes people that you think will be there or not and those that you don't expect who will step up. This is my story. 38 years old perfect health. No prior symptoms. June 23rd, I was admitted to the ER due to migraines while at work. I blacked out in the parking lot while waiting on the ambulance. I woke up in the SCIU after undergoing emergency decompressive brain craniotomy surgery for a brain tumor. I stayed there for 9 days. I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and brain metastases. The cancer spreaded to my brain. I was told by the surgeon i stopped breathing for 35 minutes before having to be intubated. I completed 5 days of srs brain Radiation in hopes to remove the small amount of tumor the surgeon wasn't able to remove. It's been 74 days now and i started my first round of chemotherapy yesterday. My first two infusions went great. It was my 3rd infusion of Toxal medication where I started to experience shortness of breath, chest pain and throat locking up. 25 minutes in the infusion they has to stop it. I must say that over the 74 days, I've experienced no cancer symptoms, thankfully. I dont know what my future holds, but im trusting God, no matter what

When my 28 year old daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer I would go to the city with her for chemo. A couple days after we would be out sightseeing and having lunch. It was surreal. On the outside we looked like a carefree mother and daughter to anyone but on the inside we were going through so much trauma. I've learned not to judge so much or be envious of people because you don't know what their life is really like. And Jayme don't ever feel guilty that you are living an ok life. No 30 year olds should ever have to deal with cancer. None of us should but we are all entitled to our good days.

I pray that Jaymie is continuing to do well. My dad had a chest cold in early winter 1996. After it hung on for a month, and got worse, he went to his doctor only to be told he had bronchitis. In early 1997, he went back again and was told he had walking pneumonia. No chest xray was ever ordered, and my dad was old school and never went to the doctor, so you know he had to be hurting. By June, he was having lower back pain and trouble walking. He went back again and was told he had a pinched nerve and needed PT. August 2nd, he couldn't get out of bed. His wife got help and took him to her doctor that did a chest xray and discovered lung tumor the size of his fist. Admitted to hospital on a Friday, on Monday afternoon he was told to get everything in order because he might live a month. His CA has mets to his bones from his skull to his lower leg, had taken out two lumbar vertebrae and part of his hip. He went home on August 9th and passed away on 8/17/97. It took me a couple of years to get accustomed to this, but I went back to college when I was 47 to become an xray tech. I worked 16 years in cardiac cath and helped numerous patients live after a heart attack. I held families when their loved ones died in the lab. I lived for my dad, and I never let a doctor I worked closely with keep information from a patient. I can't believe there are still doctors like Jaymie's and my dad's out there.

This world needs more healthcare providers like you who care on such a deep level for the families you serve. Thank you so much for sharing your story, for joining the conversation. I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer ALK mutation non smoker. Just like her, it takes months for the doctor actual diagnosis me with stage 4 lung cancer. I had to go to er for the second time and demanded additional testing. They were about to discharged me with the inhaler. The doctors were shocked to see my pet scan lighted up like a Christmas tree. Cancers were everywhere in my body, lung, abdomen and neck area. I probably dropped dead if I did advocate for myself.

It is so sad when WE need to DEMAND what tests we should have. These doctors seem to just brush you off and send you on your way if you do not advocate for yourself. On February 1, 2023, I had a thoracentesis to remove fluid from around my right lung. One liter was collected. For about 2 months before the procedure, I had a cough that will not go away with wheezing. I am now going for a CT scan this month for a dry cough I am still having with wheezing. I hope it is NOT lung cancer, I do not smoke, do drugs, etc. I just turned 62 this month and am scared to death. I also have congestive heart failure that has taken 25 pounds off me without my even trying. Thank you for allowing me to rant.

And I’m so happy that you have all this time. He got a bad cold, had pain in his back and then was diagnosed with cancer. He tried everything, but was too far gone, when he found out. We miss him so. The hospital made sure he was comfortable with an open line of morphine. The bad part was they gave the family the button. It was very hard for me to push the button. The nurses ended up giving him his final dose as the family was surrounded him. The good die young is true. He was only 61.

I've dealt with several chronic (and one rare) conditions for 34 years. Many docs, some awful and a few wonderful. Many hospitalizations, invasive tests, etc...some helpful and some made things worse. The point about what the doc says and what the patient hears is sooo valid. I'm still here largely because I refuse to say die! But all the advice about advocating for yourself is impossible when you feel like crap and no one takes you seriously, especially male doctors. Sadly, Jaymie's story isn't that unusual. I hope she continues to feel well!

This was great information regarding lung cancer and how doctors don't want to tell patients the truth about their diagnosis as well as treatments available for them in the earlier stages to get treated for cancer. It is quite understanding to be devastated by bad diagnosis when it took two additional doctors to figure out your situation that the first should have done in the beginning.

Oh Linda, Robin here. You’re really attuned. I was full of feelings hearing Jaymie tell her story as I imagine many are when they watch. We agree that we hope the medication keeps working until we have a cure for this beautiful woman and everyone else suffering from this terrible disease. Thank you so much for tuning in and for joining the conversation. Sending you so much 💛

Jaymie thank you for sharing your story! Thank you for shining a light on how we must advocate for ourselves. It's so disappointing to hear how dismissive were the medical professionals who failed to diagnose you before you reached such a critical situation. Live well.

Insist on an x-ray. I was given an x-ray as soon as my doctor heard I had coughed a spot of blood up. ( I had mentioned it to a friend even though I didn't think it was a problem, myself, and she insisted I go to the doctor asap.) The tumour was removed, I got chemo, and am in remission now.
