Stadium workers with a message to the Orioles | Edge of Sports
The Baltimore Orioles Team Store at Camden Yards is, as of 2023, subcontracted through a company called Fanatics. And Fanatics is drawing a hard line against the store retail workers represented by UNITE HERE Local 7. The union is asking for a new labor contract with full time work at a decent wage, as well as health benefits. Fanatics wants temporary workers in part time jobs without health coverage. The Orioles retail workers already make substantially less than those in other Major League Baseball retail stores. While Fanatics is playing hardball, the workers are suffering, unable to pay their bills or care for sick relatives without their health benefits. The Orioles are currently in ownership transition, with two private equity billionaires in the process of buying a majority stake in the team from longtime owners, the Angelos family. The family patriarch Peter Angelos made his money through labor law and even supported the players to the chagrin of his ownership brethren thirty years ago in the 1994 player’s strike. The question is now twofold: 1. Will Fanatics finally negotiate in good faith with the Fanatics workers? And 2. How long can the Baltimore Orioles remain silent?

I’ve been to the team store many times. Everyone working there always treated me well. Pay the employees what they’re deserved since they’re the face of the merchandise. I don’t understand how Fanatics can have a monopoly over the entire sports nation. It’s disgusting!
I'm sure owners and their corporations / investments can empty their pockets a little to help out with the struggles of life for others. Keep Up the fight 😊

TRNN, for a new show idea, can you tell us how Amazon bids out their delivery service contracts to those van driving companies. I live in Calgary and the owners of those delivery companies are located in Toronto. This is capitalism at work, money makes money and the opportunities go to those who know how to organize and take advantage of them. The workers are usually living from one day to the next, often hand to mouth and also have no idea how to enter into these fields.

Amazon even pays taxes in Luxembourg if Im not wrong, instead of US. So what can individuals do except being mocked to seek legal help, and as Chis Hedges said- poor people know that system is rigged from the start. If immigrants are replacing non-white and white collar local population, both white and non white, how is it possible to combat this recycling of people?

It’s really quite grim when you see a team like this which is (or was) one of the more moral ones in professional sports, be sold off to a faceless hedge fund which no doubt will only make things worse; and another unpleasant corporation mistreating its workers and hocking endless plastic merchandise.

Stadium work is no easy task! Fanatics have a tendency to act uncouth and crazy with all that beer drinking. I wouldn't attend any sporting event in the US for all the 'Tea in China', no matter who's playing!
Is refusal to accept cash a trend in professional sports venues? I experienced this buying souvenirs and refreshments at NBA and minor league baseball games over the past year, the first pro sports events I attended in decades. This would be yet another reason to boycott these games.
