Stabilizing: Infusing Resin With A Vacuum

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've been wanting to do some stabilizing in the shop for a long time. It's a very different process from casting. It allows us to work with soft or otherwise unworkable woods that just wouldn't hold up to turning or other types of machining.
Let me show you what I learned!

Wow, is that crazy cool. I guess it's similar to fossilization in a way, except that it takes a little less time and lots more resin! The first idea that jumped out at me was an easier way to micarta. But you could probably de-bubble small castings with it, too. Good luck ;)

Even a Bread chessboard would be really interesting lol... it was really interesting to see the bread adhere to each other and show no signs of coming apart. I wonder what a PB&J or a different type of sandwich would look like after being in the chamber lol... I would use the other pot and put the sandwich into another bowl to avoid the mess

Butter isn't a solid in the same way that flour is solid, its a saturated fat so it changes depending on the temperature. Its not porous so it won't absorb resin. He's already experimented with casein which is plastic made from milk solids.

I've also noticed a lot of people want to see a bread knife... How about you (1)Stabilize an entire loaf of bread, (2)Cut off 1/3 or 1/4 of it and make those into the knife handles and (3)Use the rest as the "Butcher's Block" to hold the knives. It'll LOOK Like A Loaf... BUT Will Be A Knife Set.

Stabilise all the ingredients for your favourite sandwich and then cast the complete sandwich in a block of clear resin. No other reason than because you can.

I do the same thing when I make turning blanks. However, I have both a vacuum pump and an air compressor hooked up to the chamber. I turn on the vacuum pump first and wait until all the bubbles have disappeared. Then, I turn on the air compressor and pressurize the chamber to around 130 PSI and let it sit there for a while. I have found that it had better results when being used along with an air compressor.

Geez, you're going to have to be careful with that device and bread.. Imagine if you had used Wonder Bread, which is already inherently stable and will still be around after the heat death of the universe and all.. Put that in the chamber with too much resin and turn on the vacuum and you could have caused the universe to implode!!
