You lasted till 95...that's pretty good. I was up there last for Crown, and to look around (water towers, Holy Trinity, the old parks, houses, etc.). I don't get up there that often, but every time I do, it seems that more and more is gone. Sad to know what it once was, yet you can see the traces....

Thanks for posting this great video. My paternal grandfather and grandmother were born in St Louis. Grandfather's family were of the "48ers" group, coming through Ellis island and settling in the St.Louis area. Both of my grandfathers spoke fluent German. Always at home, but rarely in public. I will watch this video several times. @ 17:23 ... Und ja, der Deutsche macht alles bis zum bitteren Ende!

Funny, my family roots are German and Dutch, but we came via New York (New Netherland) and Pennsylvania to Iowa, then to Livingston Missouri. My mother speaks fluent German and I speak conversational, but am learning. My comfort food, culture, the Holidays are all flavored by my roots. I have a German Man-cave in my basement, with beer steins, wood carvings from the Black Forest, and images of German culture, with a touch of Dutch as well.

I'm surprised that they didn't specifically mention the many German Bakeries in St. Louis and the German-style bake goods that they sold. Do you remember St. Louis' delicious Gooey Butter Cake? According to tradition, it was first made, by mistake, in a German bakery. I remember the German corner grocery store in our neighborhood in the 40's and 50's with a butcher shop in the back and jars of candy in front. They would accept empty Coke bottles for a few cents apiece. This was a great way for kids to earn spending money . . . for candy in the jars at the front of the store.

My family have just discovered a German great great great great uncle that came to St Louis in the mid 1800’s and brought our GGGG grandmother over. Turns out we didn’t really venture too far from the area at all.

My great great great grandmother received a Widow's pension of land in Sedalia, MO from the federal government as a result of my ggg grandfather's service in the War of 1812. She and her younger children lived in Sedalia until the Civll War, when she went back to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to live with my gg grandfather. Her grown daughter went to Alabama and grown son went to Texas to work on the railroad.
