I don't completely know what happened to kill 1/4th of of my fairly nice yard (Bermuda Yard). I'm paralyzed and I normally run around on my zero turn spraying my yard. I let a friends kid do it and he didn't walk fast enough. He sprayed about 4 times the rate and it wiped my yard out. It's literally 80% dirt now. I used Prodiamine, red label image for POA Annua, so I'm scared 😱. I went from loudly saying walk faster to yelling walk faster and he wouldn't listen. Any valid ideas ideas and not ideas from those who just talk trash. Thanks in advance.

Thirty years ago I got my newly sodded St Augustine looking amazing. Then June came and the grub worms ate the roots across the entire lawn. So I litteraly rolled that dead lawn up like an area rug. Disposed of it, then spread durasban across the lawn to wipe out those well fed grubbs. BTW, grubs are June Bug nymphs. Then I had new sod layed down and purchased a lawncare book. That book was an amazing resource. I have been awarded yard of the month many times over the past 30 years. Durasban (Chlorpyrifos ethy) used to be the golden ticket insecticide. Dursban was banned by the EPA around 2000-2001 because of concerns for the health of humans and wildlife. It even killed mosquitos, which are a problem on the gulf coast.

Never had any experience with this grass type but it seems much lower maintenance than everything else I see on KZread.

That is the way to do it in Central Florida because when you have 4 inches of grass or more above it reduces the need for watering by half and cutting at 4 in if you have a thick healthy lush St Augustine lawn it will suppress the weeds as long as you keep it healthy and thriving

Quick question, I get spots that sink slowly over time around my home, amid the fast spread of weeds that blow in with our NWFL storms...I'm about to go in with a friend on some full dirt before long and wanted your opinion on filling it in; subsequently, I will need to grow grass. Suggestions/advice? I have a large palm to deal with and new gutter system to attend to as well, but they main yard itself tends to sink little divots that in a couple seasons become bigger and broader spread, which I have backfilled before then another spot nearby does it. I'm about 5 mi from the beachfront and sitting on about 25 ft or so of dirt before the aquifer so I imagine this a factor. Sprinkler system is also being repaired soon so I can automatically water. Thanks in advance!

I'm south... southern hemisphere. Cherry tree is busy dropping leaves, but that means i can mow to break up the leaves. St Aug out the back, did my first top dress this season, bit of work due to access, but those areas look thicker and greener than all the areas i didn't top dress. Finally sat down and converted lb per 1,000sqft to metric as i have no idea how big 1,000sqft is. It's just under 100sqm, exactly my front lawn. I kept it going till xmas when i had surgery then just kept it alive. Here's 🍻 to my next season.

Dallas grass, Johnson grass and most of all crab grass are the hardest weeds to control. The back breaking job of pulling them out is the hardest work. A garden weasel or shovel are instrumental in getting the whole plant out.

Hi Allan, maybe you could perhaps help me in making a decision. I am wanting to sod my backyard. I do have dogs. It will be a high traffic area in that regard . I absolutely love the way Saint Augustine looks and I want to use this to sod my yard if I can? I'm from Alabama Yard is mostly sunny, however I do have one shade tree. Is this still a good choice to sod my yard with St. Augustine or should I go with a type of Bermuda instead in your opinion. Thanks for what you do. I appreciate it.

Will top dressing help to jump start growth in St. Augustine? A few weeks ago, I put down fertilizer. Will repeat at the 8 week mark. I’m in zone 10a with very sandy soil. I have a few large areas/patches where it’s bare sand likely cause the irrigation doesn’t get everywhere due to some berms with a tall croton plant in the middle of the yard. I’m now watering those areas with an oscillating sprinkler three times a week. Should I top dress the bare areas?

I recently did an experiment by cutting the long stolons that have rooted from the crown. If you apply fertilizer and water for the next few weeks it will establish independently and spread faster instead of having to get most of its nutrients from a distant crown. I'm not sure if this method is widely known. It forces the stolons to create a deeper root system completely independent from the original crown.

So you recommend fertilizer outside of spring is what I’m hearing? People keep telling me not to do that because of burning but you seem to suggest it’s not an issue for you.

Hey Allyn. Thanks for the great advice. I just purchased the warm season E-book for my St. Augustine lawn. I see you're rocking with the EGO zero turn. I have the push mower and the chainsaw with the 7.5 AH battery; thinking about upgrading to the zero turn if you recommend it.

It's well worth the money - cuts great and has lots of nice options such as blade speed adjustment that I like when my SA gets a little thick.

I have both Floratam and my front yard and large side are Provista, since they are both St Augustine do you suggest the same weed control, fertilizers, etc for both?

You can use the same fertilizer for both. For weeds you can use Glyphosate on your ProVista (not on Floratam!) and a combination of products for Floratam. I like Celcius.

Are these instructions/products different for the folks in Central Texas? We get far less rain and higher temps in the summer. Let me know.

Hey man my neighbor has St Augustine and he's been watering and fertilizing and cuts every week, but grass is a ft thick, He's never thatched it. It looks beautiful but it's crazy looking. What can he do?

Hey LCN! I moved my mower to the highest setting and have been mowing every week, yet I'm not actually cutting much of anything. My lawn doesn't seem to want to grow vertically. It looks over grown and is mixed with some weeds and cutting high isn't making it look much better. Should I mow lower for a bit to encourage growth?? It's St Aug btw and I'm in South Louisiana.

  • @Thelawncarenut

yes for sure you can mow lower as long as you are following the 1/3rd rule. You could have a dwarf variety of St Aug that just won't grow tall. The key is to always follow the 1/3 rule.
