E channel for the win on this track... Sounded cleaner and had that airy top end while the G brought the vocal more up front and emphasized more of the throat tones / voice grit ... I use the G on drums and E on everything else, but I might have to try that E on drums too !

TheRealPistolP Yeah he was saying E channel for pop, r&b & hip hop / Rock on the G channel. I'm working on a track with all E channel strips but I think I'll dupe the settings with a G channel! The harmonics are crunchy AF. Yes, it's all preference it's great to have two options. I'm just waiting on the 9000K emulation!!!

I have watched this a few times and that always bothers me. The mid range girth of the G is clear here but his settings make it even more. On the E he is scooping 2.5db of 3k and on the G he is boosting 3db of 1.5 (these are approx). That difference is what makes the G sound more different in this clip. I used to work on a G console and I own the SSL waves plug ins (I have since 2007 or whenever they came out) and I also own the brainworks SSL channels. The waves is more detailed and clear in the top end and more round in the bottom. The brainworks is more mid focused and gets almost harsh in the highs but like a console would. Im not saying harsh in a bad way, I am saying harsh in the sense of how you would hea the difference in this video of the G vs the E. To me thats more real of what an SSL does. The Waves E is like a R Channel, very clear and accurate. The G is a little more real. But brainworks is more real than these. To be fair, I never worked on a real E console and only have these comparisons to picture what Im hearing. But the E to me has a more sparkly top and round bottom and smooth mids. But the more I mix, the more I like having the raw mids of a G there. I can always clean that up if needed but mixes lately are getting too clean and clear so the G adds a realness to me.

Is this another example of pop musicians not finding english to be a sufficient language to use for singing, but are too lazy to learn another one, so they make up a childish make-believe version of english? The indie-pop movement around 2010-2011 did this, and I really thought (hoped) we were past this now :)

I find myself reaching for the g channel more often, personally…my rationalization being that I tend to bring in channel strips for sources that want some energy and movement. An acoustic guitar that sounds GREAT is gonna get pro q and maybe some low ratio/high threshold compression. But an overhead bus whose energy I’m trying to melt with a 76’d room mic…that’s a g channel job, imo. You’ll get your normal processing with that funny, ssl syrup that’s tough to describe.

on the vocal yeah, but I mean let's be real, they have to demonstrate a difference somehow... Most of the real differences are under-the-hood so unless you know what you're doing, half the time it's just your workflow being affected and not the actual sound (and if it is, it's subtle as mentioned in the beginning of the vid). On that note, the snare in the overall mix had a bit more weight on the G-channel and the mid-range had a bit more "thump". That was about it for me.

  • @RedButtonTV1

neh... more like, 'buy it, the old one you have now ain't so good', the new one is better'... ...and maybe it is, but one can't see it from this particular video. energy being fed into the plugin must be the same when outputing from the plugin, when parameters are on zero and it must sound the same as if being bypassed. 100% in 100% out signal. because otherwise we get colorization of the signal, and that is a bad thing. so this video is in reality saying that, either plugin changes the original sound (not good), or it's the same except for the color of the knobs... if the algorithms were rewritten, this video can't & doesn't show... agree?

G has it's uses. You can see that it's definitely a difference. Does the G fit with modern music? Not always. I feel that if you're trying to go for a number 1, in any of the modern genres just get the E channel. I mean they used it on closer by the chainsmokers. And for good reason too.

Q is a measure of bandwidth, i.e. the slope of the bell curve. A narrow Q (higher number) means you're boosting a narrow range of frequencies, while a wide Q (lower number) means you're boosting a wide range of frequencies. Wide Q's sound more natural when boosting, whilst narrow Q's sound more natural when cutting.

Could b multiple reasons If ur in a non sound treated room there can be phase issues with the way sound reverbs around the room and that might mean it attenuates down on certain freqs that might be normally more audible. Too much low end could drown out high and mids in a echoy space aswel. If ur monitors are going through a preamp make sure they dont have any eq’s from hardware or software (windows sound settings).

I do some engineer study, many of my colleagues (teachers, engeneer, students) say they say they can hear the difference between the G and the E, or between an mp3 320 and a wav, or between the EQ Neve and SSL, etc... I can confirm you they all failed. They cannot do better that 50% by doing A/B, so this is not better than chance. You can hear some differences of course, but you need a very good calibrated monitoring system, a big neutral room. But those who says that it changes everything are completly possessed for me. The main mistake that is done with this type of EQ, Compressor, plugin, analog console comparison, is the volume problem. If you really put the same volume (with a vu meter / peak meter for example, not like in this example) many of this people will be lost.

So you definitely need to learn ✌️💖 the e and g are working differently, g has a proportional q and has more broad curves, if you do a dip at 200hz with a SSL G, it will feel brighter than the SSL E eq settings for example, which has more narrow curves.

I would have thought it was the other way around? The E is crisper and has more air, while the G is warmer and rounder.
