I can hear the top of the kick more with the UAD version which helps my ears find it, the SSL Native buries the kick and rounds off the top end, feel like you could push the high shelf even further with the Native version. The Waves is a mix of the two, has that tinnie sound of the UAD one but a rounder low end. All are cool though

Great comparison. For me the SSL is Smooth (as you said). But I was feeling it also added glue to the mix overall, everything seemed to sit better together with the SSL Native. Currently on a 6 month demo of all SSL Native plugins, which I got free with the purchase of my SSL 2. I love the Channel Strip, Vocal Strip, Drum Strip, Bus Comp and Flex Verb, I can see myself having to spend some money to own them in the near future.

Thank you for this fantastic video. I came across this when thinking about whether I should buy the SSL native plugin. I have the UA and Waves SSL. As a mixer, you can't just think about your own opionion you also have to cater for the artist and the listener depending on the genre. A lot of comments seem to be triggered by brand preference. I think they all sound good in their own way. Personally, I like warmth and I feel the SSL native gives this mix warmth. And for this genre of music its spot on. Thanks again 👍🏾

You can switch between E and G with UAD, not sure about waves on the older one but I think you can with the new one. The SSL native channel strip is actually a 9000j series control strip while uad and waves are based off the 4000. I believe the latest waves channel is the 9000 as well.

The SSL native is based on the 9000 series so it is going to be a little smoother. The UAD is harsh. The waves does good of the characteristics of a 4000. Sounds radio ready. The SSL native sounds more warm, smooth if you want that for the song but again it is based on a 9000

Sensational comparison... which basically reaffirmed my choice of the Waves ones... and yes, price is an issue. KZread/streaming compression notwithstanding, I listened on my near-fields and I could definitely hear what you were hearing so it's probably the closest I've heard to what my own stuff would sound like that I've heard. Totally subscribed and belled :-) The SSL native was definitely the 'best' sounding (probably that I've heard, via YT), but I guess I'm looking to take a 'retrograde' step from later, digital consoles... I can already do 'pristine' all day, though I was REALLY impressed with the Native plugin... it really shows how good an SSL console can sound against the premium Japanese brands I'm used to in broadcast and post. If I was working in a modern studio doing 192K stuff all day, I'd be pretty swayed by the SSL native stuff. I'm actually after some 'dirt' and 'warmth' of tracking through the Waves SSL E channel - switched 'on', but with everything not engaged (using ProTools or Logic as a HDR basically), and then mixing with all the features as needed. Your demo sounded like the Waves channel really provided that 'glue it all together' sound I loved about good consoles from yesteryear, which made the whole mix gel... and didn't have that 'crusty', toppy edge the UA one did. Considering the amount of outboard you'd need to buy, the UA would be wickedly expensive and then, once you committed that many $$$ to external DSP, you have kinda locked yourself in a bit to try to get as much use out of it as possible and stick to UA plugins. If they 'open-sourced the API so *anyone* could do it... maybe... but that's not the model at present AFAIK :-( Finally, the Waves plugins can run on external DSP via Waves' SoundGrid Servers and they can integrate with multiple devices other than computers, e.g. in my case an X32 (and a Wing soooon, I hope). I'm hoping by committing to the Waves SG platform I can stop upgrading my Mac (or PC for that matter) and *just* use ProTools and Logic as we 'used to, back in the day', where things only went into 'the box' for tweaking... and only 'if needed', rather than having to make music with a mouse. It'd be nice to have the $$$ and space for a 'real' SSL 4000 with flying faders and all the gear to track and mix through, but hopefully the hybrid approach I've chosen will get me 'back to the future' OK. Thanks again!

Thankfully UA has released the native version of their plugins. I have an Apollo Solo and can use my single core on the way in and then apply something like the SSL, during the mix phase, to all the channels using the native version and the mac’s CPU. For a small home studio this is a real nice way to go.

Agreed. They are adding new plugins as they are able. I believe Spark launched with 14 titles and is currently somewhere in the 30 title range. I’m simply saying, if a Solo is all one can afford, the addition of the native plugins makes a Solo a much more viable option. The plugins they have made native cover many of the needs and wants a small studio will have during the mix, while still being able to use a small number of plugins during tracking for the performer’s comfort and to print to the recording and speed up the mix. But yes, not every title is available natively yet. Also, some of the plugins are super dsp intense. The Capitol reverb, for example, uses something like 70% of a core. That doesn’t leave much for much else.

Thank you for taking time to create and share this video. Of the three, I prefer the SSL Native; it just sounds so musical with warmth and depth with more defined lows and a very smooth top end; and it just glues the mix. The Waves would be my second choice; the top end isn’t as smooth but still has a bit more depth than the UAD. I didn’t care for the UAD, as the top end was rather bright and more importantly, to my ears, the UAD seemed to a bit wider but slightly less glue and it also seemed to flatten overall sound; bringing the more of the upper mids and highs to the forefront, less depth. Based on this video, I just purchased the SSL Native Channel Strip v2 and the Native Bus Compressor v2 and I couldn't be more pleased. The SSL Native sound is music to my ears.

Crazy! The Waves emulation beats them all lol. The Native SSL sounds pillowy and bloated. It alters transients and does something to the image. My least favorite. The UAD version is better but sounds harsh and acidic. The saturation algorithm doesn’t sound harmonic or useful. Sounds like cheap digital distortion. The Waves version wins because it sounds musical. Plain and simple. It enhances the original source rather than simply altering it. I was gunning for the Native SSL version to be honest. Those suckers are on sale now. Thanks for the video man.

I find that in the context of dense mixes that the Waves channel strip has a punch low/mid-low character that I really like. Probably more so with the G-Channel however which I use often and on every channel. Very low CPU usage and it equates to a nice controlled low-end and punchy mix. Great video bro!

So SSL just released Version 2 of these plugins along with a hardware controller. In their video, they state that the original as well as the new version are based off a 9000k console and that the E/G selector is just for the bell curves. I'm not sure anybody knew that about the first release and assumed that the E/G selector was emulating the selected version of the console and not just the curves. BTW - you can upgrade your V1 to V2 for free.

I whole-heartedly agree with these conclusions. In my opinion, all of the best, most 3-dimensional, transient accurate and “open” sounding plugins are either direct ports of digital devices or “sampled” hardware technology(Acustica). Ironically, the former sound far better AND require far less CPU than their hardware emulating counterparts due to not adding fake hardware saturation. The SSL Native channel strip is the Duende channel strip, which is the direct ported code from their “C” series digital consoles. On the UAD platform, the AMS Neve DFC channel is by far their ugliest GUI but best sounding channel strip in my opinion... a direct port of the Neve “Digital Film Console” channel strip. The same model used at “Industrial Light & Magic”/Lucasfilm. Softube released their gambit channel, direct ported from Weiss digital hardware and it destroys all the other console one channel strips... not only that, but if you start with the Weiss Gambit Channel and replace the EQ, comp and shape sections with say, the SSL 9000 K console, ironically it sounds WAY more like that hardware than with the original “modeled” channel. The same goes for the Neve & API channels. I spent YEARS on an SSL “Duality” and I know the sonic signature of their modern channels quite well. This “Gambit Channel” hack provides Console One users a whole new palate of fidelity. If UAD ported the Neve DFC for Console One, we would literally have the same audio fidelity as Skywalker Sound/Lucasfilm along with a hardware workflow. I think we are going to look back at the era of algorithmic “caricatures” of analog harmonics as dark times in professional audio. I’d like to add that not only does the SSL Native sound superior, I find that I make different/better decisions using it compared to the UAD.

I know this is an old video at this point, but wanted to say thanks for the good comparison. Personally, there are things I like about each plugin. The silkiness of the SSL overall is good; it definitely has that rounder "analog" sound--ALMOST tape-like in its smoothness. If I could, I'd combine that with the low end definition of the UA and the mid and upper clarity of the WAVES.

So, this is what I hear on my studio monitors (2xAdamA7X+AdamSub7, properly calibrated): Depth: ->SSL Native->UAD->Waves, Transient:UAD-> SSL Native->Waves, High end sparkle: UAD->Waves->SSL Native, Dirt: UAD->Waves->SSL Native, Clarity: SSL Native->Waves->UAD, High end analog sound(good harmonics/the least harsh):SSL Native->Waves->UAD. Personal preference: SSL Native->UAD->Waves. I'd figure that on both UAD and Waves there would be extra work involved outside of the channel strip such as transient designing, de-essing the overheads, multiband compression, etc. So SSL Native is a clear winner to me for this purpose. I'd imagine if you're working with a proper analog console and need to export everything to the Master Bus you would struggle if the sound coming out of it was the UAD or Waves sound from these plugs, so that's the way I see it. Also, I've got S1 4.6 Pro but I've moved to Cubase 10.5, contrary to what many people say around here, audio engines on DAWs do matter, and Cubase, to me, sounds the best and the warmest out of all of them, while S1 has a "thin" summing sound to it, very hard to expand the stereo field. These are my 2 cents on this one. Cheers for the review!

Price is always an issue for me, as is CPU draw. At the end of the day however, the sound is what we all should prioritize to justify the added expense over another competitor. On my JBL monitor system the UAD emphasized the kick drum. The Waves one' which I own, emphasized the hi-hat... a lot. Kinda behaving like a maximizer, or turning up the treble on a stereo system. The actual SSL was overall more natural sounding. Its helpful that you kept using the same piece of music for comparison. It permits us all to fine-tune our ears and zero in on what's passing by several times.

I think this topic is really hard to discuss as a real comparison is hard to make... I just wondered that you had to come up with the entire mix on one of the three plugins at first (I now assume you decided to do the mix on the SSL one but I of course can't know if thats true) and later copied the settings to the other plugin versions... as we all know the eqs don't represent the same eq curves for the exact same settings, therefore its obvious (I think) that the console you did the mix on in the first place will sound the best as you dialed the settings that would suit the mix best. As the channel strips all respond differently on the same settings, its clear to me that the other consoles won't sound that good just because you didn't mix the song on them and the eq curves are not really matched to suit the mix best.

The SSL by a mile. The UAD sounded very harsh and the low end went ghost. The Waves was not bad but had a weakness in the low end compared to the SSL. I have the waves version but I have no bias. What I did find surprising is that the UAD sounded the worse in my opinion which is odd since that plugin is at least $200 vs the $29 Waves version on sale yet they sounded similar however for the cost difference that should not be the case by no means.

First off, thanks for the shootout. I really disagree that the Waves one and the UAD sound very close. Something is wrong with the high end of the Waves one. It just seems kind of thin and brittle to me. The UAD is bright by default but if you tone it back a bit you've still got a good sounding plug. Or, for instance, you can pair it up with something like an SM7B, which can take a bit of brightening without getting harsh. You're right about the SSL Native though. It sounds great.

The waves being an older plugin makes sense that it doesn't use much CPU no ? It was tailored to the processors at the time which were less powerful than today so programs had to use less CPU and be more efficient to compensate for slower processors. Now we can do more with processors becausee they are faster and can handle it. But programs can sometimes hog it more while doing the same thing if they are not properly optimized.

Personally, I hear a noticeable thinning of the sound in the waves version. I know you can get a great mix out of them, but personally I would choose UAD or SSL version in a perfect world. I hear noticeably more punch, and a better defined low end and clarity across the entire spectrum with the UAD. The SSL in house version is much cleaner and smoother, but less punchy and a muddier, less clearly defined low end (which could easily be fixed based on mix decisions). However, the SSL version maintains a thick and full sound much like UAD. Waves is an entry level option and can bring good mixes if you really focus on bringing out your low end and counteracting the thinning of the sound, but UAD or SSL are far superior choices if you have the cash for them

got SSL and Waves.. but always end up with my freeware stuff on drums: Channel Strip Old-75 or Dead Duck Channel... just sits better in the mix. Event tried Scheps Omni.. which is kind of cool.. but still just like the simplicity of my freeware stuff. Just saying: you cant beat your ears.. use them.. and a lot of freeware plugs will be just as good.

@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy plugin Alliance is the only developer with the SSL console 9000 J, the native are only G and E

SSL and Waves are winners for me on this comparison. SSL is very thick and Waves has the best top end. All are solid. Sure the UAD sounds more harsh and bright when it's on the exact same settings as the others, but if you were mixing with it you'd compensate for that and your mix would be just as good.

As far as I know SSL channel strip is emulation of 9000K , which is mean you have compare different consoles 4000 vs 9000 , Am I wrong guys?

I have to disagree at the point "UAD is a little bit bigger, easier to see". Yes UAD is just a little bit bigger but more crowded. Probably because of that giant output fader and line /mic knobs (preamp section?). Knobs are a little bit smaller than Waves' and positioned closer
