I just learned that my grandmother came to America on that ship -- probably 4th class. I doubt if she saw the grandeur, but she had a safe passage and lived a long life.

In 1914, my Grossemutti and aunt went home to Germany for a visit. When they returned to the US, they sailed aboard the Imperator (and made it home very shortly before war was declared in Europe). Here's to you, Grossemutti!

It is inevitable that when people compare this to the Olympic Class ships, they form strong opinions about the relative merits of either trio of superliners. The differences in the scale of the first class public rooms is obvious. The Olympic and Titanic's interiors were, while elegant and beautiful, also modestly scaled. Sometimes disappointingly so, as in the case of the single deck dining saloon. While the floor area of the dining saloon was huge and the decor very attractive, the effect was underwhelming due to the lack of height and thus failed to impress. Only the upper landings of the famous staircases were "impressive". The Lounge, Reading & Writing Room, Smoking Room or Verandah Cafés were not particularly large or original and merely followed established White Star traditions. In comparison with the first class rooms on other top liners of the day like Lusitania, Rotterdam or France, they were unremarkable, but the decor was certainly very attractive and inviting. However, the Olympic Class ships were the first to offer a wide range of previously unseen amenities like reception rooms, spas and swimming pools, squash courts and, in the case of Titanic, the first private promenade spaces. All important innovations that attracted wealthy travelers and inspired the competition do do even more. It is interesting how much the differences between the Olympic and Imperator reveal about the economic, social, cultural and even political conditions that influenced their creation. Ballin's ships followed White Star's grand hotel style concept but went much, much further. HAPAG was then - by far - the biggest shipping line in the world and could come up with the financial resources to build ships on such a grand scale, aided and abetted by the political and social atmosphere of the ascending German Empire. As a result, the Imperator/Vaterland/Bismarck were grand and impressive on a scale never before seen and never really surpassed either. While the most sumptuously designed French liners such as Paris, Ile de France, L'Atlantique and of course the famous Normandie had interiors of similar grandeur and scale, they did not really exceed anything that Ballin's bombastic trio had to offer. And those interiors were made for partying! Entertaining gatherings of large, ebullient crowds, dancing and dining in palatial surroundings...all that reflected the lifestyles, customs and feelings of a powerful, exuberant upper crust from Germany, mainland Europe and the "new money" from the USA, which were to make up the largest portion of the first class passengers. In contrast to that White Star, since it became part of IMM, was under enormous pressure to perform well financially to "prop up" the teetering trust it was absorbed into. The Olympic Class was built to control costs. I know that runs counter to the exaggerated legends about the luxury of Titanic in particular, but part of the reason why those ships fell short on grandeur by comparison was to keep construction and operational costs down. Money was spent on features to attract wealthy passengers but not a penny more. Thus the bare, plain execution of the swimming pool. The presence of a pool was amazing enough, for the time being anyway, so it wasn't necessary to also decorate it lavishly. Competitive pressure from ships like Imperator forced White Star to decorate the pool on the Britannic, but of course, that never came to pass. Also, the English and American "old money" passengers that formed a large portion of White Star's regular clientele were much less prone to "partying". Historic documents like personal letters, travel diaries and similar accounts reveal that the atmosphere on British ships like the Olympic tended to be more quiet, subdued and sedate. Nobody at White Star could even conceive of hundreds of amusement-seeking partiers dancing waltzes in giant ballrooms. Not before WW1 anyway...one quietly read a book in some cozy corner, engaged in polite conversation over tea in the lounge or went for a brisk walk around the spacious decks. In spite of the differences in "inner virtues" between these ships, one area where Olympic & Titanic triumphed without equal was their outward appearance, especially in their original form, uncluttered yet by "lifeboats for all". They were, and I doubt many would disagree, among the most beautiful ocean liners ever built. The attractiveness of their iconic 4-funneled profile and clean sweeping lines never have been surpassed.

It would be great if those who design the interiors of today's cruise ships would re-create some of these interiors or design interiors in the same styles. I don't know of any liner enthusiast who like the interiors of today's ships.

I'll add: there are some pleasing interiors here and there but overall the present doesn't compare well with the past. I realize that because of safety codes some interiors can't be replicated but I believe that people of talent and training can great things.

Hello, I know it's a super late answer, but maybe you will read this. I think I found it: Your ship was launched 1924 as the MS Gripsholm and was later sold to Germany and renamed MS Berlin in 1955 and sailed until 1966. (German Version: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_(Schiff,_1925) (English Version: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Gripsholm_(1924).
