They raised the bar. British were losing transatlantic passenger service and had to dish out massive government subsidies under the guise of the Royal Mail Ship contracts to catch up and surpass the Germans. Hence just one challenge false illusion of British superiority of shipbuilding. Their interiors set the stage for the battle of the floating palaces.

Yes at the end of the 19thc the German ships were surpassing the British, hence Cunard`s ``Lusitania`` ``Mauritania`` and ``Aquitania`` which eclipsed the German liners. Then Hamburg Amerika came out with the ``Imperator`` and ``Vaterland`` which were more luxurious than the ``Olympic``and ill fated ``Titanic`` So the rivalry was good for those who could afford a trans-Atlantic crossing, in 1st class of course - lol.

@@swunt10 I thought the winners went in this order- 1907 the Mauretania, then the Bremen in 1929, then the Rex , then the Normandie and Queen Mary battled for the blue riband and the United States after 1953.

The Lusitania, Mauretania and Aquitania were the fastest ships as I understand which is why they had the designation of Royal Mail Ship (RMS) where the Titanic and her sisters were never intended to be high-speed ships and so had the designation of SS. From what I've read the decor of the 3 Cunarders was rather austere compared to the White Star and German ships.

It must have been a joy to first see this big, gleaming steamer with such sleek and elegant lines in the water. It was a work of design art as well as of new technology. North German Lloyd was a famous German-British collaboration, was it not?

@@swunt10 You're so wrong it's laughable ... anyone with a basic knowledge in ocean liners knows the Olympic class from White Star (British) were the first superliners. And the Mauretania from Cunard (also British), held the blue riband for 20 years through the interwar period. The Germans made the inferior copies that could never come close to the superior British liners. Through all classes, from 1st to 3rd, it was a much better experience on a British liner. And majority of our liners were sunk due to the despicable actions of the Kaiserliche Marine ... so please don't go there.

@@EequalzMc2BigE you maybe want to check wikipedia first boy. then you wouldn't have to write all that nonsense. start with the wiki page of SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse "entered service in 1897. It was the first liner to have four funnels and is considered to be the first "superliner."" "she marked the beginning of a change in the way maritime supremacy was demonstrated in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. The ship began a new era in ocean travel and the novelty of having four funnels was quickly associated with size, strength, speed and above all luxury." also the germans ships where much more luxerious, just look at the pictures, double high dining rooms, light shafts bringing natural light even down to the lower decks and did you notice all the strange horns sticking out the ships upper deck? they are for airing the ship. british ships didn't have that, they where always a bit darker all with stale air. so much so that e.g. the RMS Empress of Ireland sank after a collision with another ship because portholes where left open after the ship already left the harbor to ventilate the ship. that's how bad british ships where. PS the only reason the lusitania and mauritania got the blue riband was because they cheated changing the way it was measured because that was the only way for them to beat the SS Deutschland by 0.8 knots the Bremen on the other hand fair and square got the blue riband with almost 2 knots more speed. but I give it to you that the brits are good at cheating. btw the 20 years of the mauritania don't really count because it was ww1.

@@swunt10 Please do not call me boy, and you know wikipedia is not a reliable resource? And sorry, but SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was just a big yacht. I'd hardly call her a "superliner" at 15,000 tonnes, she was only the same size as The Great Eastern (another British feat), which came over fifty years before. Whereas, the Olympic class at 45,000 tonnes were over 50% larger than anything that had come before, so truly deserved the recognition of superliner. And yes, I'm fully aware of the function of those "horns" (or vents) and how they were an absolutely eyesore. The Olympic class resolved the issue perfectly with the fourth dummy funnel and freed up deck space in the process. Yes, they had a dummy funnel, but SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse had two, so your four funnel point is moot. The German liners' interiors were stale and uninviting when compared to the British liners, it was only the French who eventually took over the British in that sphere. And the Empress of Ireland was Canadian owned not British. P.S. I''m very sceptical of this nonsense, but regardless they'll go down in history as the blue riband holders: that's all that matters. BTW WW1 lasted four years not twenty(!)

There is a model of the Kaiser Wilhem der Grosse in 1:250 scale made by Hamburger Modellbaubogen Verlag. It's made of paper and has over 1,000 parts. Google the company and you will see it. I have a lot of paper ship models and they are a lot more interesting to build than plastic. or google "card models" and info will turn up. I have the model, I just haven't started building it yet. Maybe this winter I will take a crack at it.
