SS EASTLAND ROLLS OVER - 844 LOST. Victims at Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois.

Congrats to the FOTF Gang! We all have purchased a gravestone with porcelain oval picture for one of the children who had lost their life in this horrific tragedy. PLEASE LEAVE A FLOWER AND A NOTE HERE, at this victim's memorial - www.findagrave.com/memorial/2...

THIS STORY:
The SS Eastland was a passenger ship based in Chicago and used for tours. On 24 July 1915, the ship rolled over onto its side while tied to a dock in the Chicago River. A total of 844 passengers and crew were killed in what was the largest loss of life from a single shipwreck on the Great Lakes.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

FYI: while waiting for the Doctor I read an article in a magazine that said: In a park or cemetery if you see a statue of a horse with both front legs in the air the person died in battle. If the horse has 1 front leg in the air it means the person died of wounds received in a battle. If the horse has all 4 legs on the ground it means he died of natural causes. I thought this would interest viewers.

"Little Feller" is somewhat similar to "Little Miss 1565" from the Hartford circus fire in July 1944. It is a somewhat lost tragedy to history considering it was in fact the worst disaster involving a Great Lakes ship. Jay Bonasinga wrote an exellent book in 2005 on the Eastland. It was not so much he wrote that it was forgotten, but rather just buried in the collective memory of such a horrid event. Too painful to resurface in the form of any anual memorial in the years afterward. There was nothing to commemorate it 10, 25, or even 50 years later. It wasn't until the early 2000's that a formal memorial marker was even put there at the sight. In the preface of his book Bonasinga wrote that the book was dedicated "to the heavy burden of memory."

Interesting and sad. A while ago I was doing research on Ancestry and discovered that I had a cousin who was a victim in the disaster. Her name was Jenny L. Erickson. She was 24, single, and a stenographer. She is buried in Elmwood Cemetery. This video motivated me to find out her plot number and request a photo on findagrave. I'm curious what she has.

The bodies of those that lost their lives that day were placed in a warehouse serving as a makeshift morgue. That old warehouse is now where Harpo Studios (Oprah Winfrey) is located. The Studio is reportedly haunted by some that lost their lives on the SS Eastland. I can see that. Horrible tragedy that could have been prevented. 😥

Well, this has got me researching this afternoon wanting to learn more! Here's an interesting factoid: "There likely was no one very famous on the ship that day. We have no records that show there was anyone of notoriety that was aboard the Eastland that day. We do have a documented account that stated that Mr. George Halas was going to attend the Western Electric picnic that morning. He had tickets. He played as a part of the sports teams. He was a summer hire while he was going to college and he worked at Western Electric and he had every plan to be at the picnic. [But] he was late in arriving, so he actually did not board the Eastland and was not a part of the Eastland tragedy." So eerie when you hear those stories of people who were supposed to be where a disaster struck, yet fate intervened.

My grandfather Ferdinand Hilpert was in Chicago, down from Milwaukee. He was going to get on the Eastland , but like George Halas was late. His wife,Hilda my grandmother had a similar experience. Her father and mother , the Steldts had decided to go to Chicago to see the famous vaudeville preformer Eddie Foy. When they got to the Iriquois theatre, they couldn't get it. So they decided to go back home according to my dad. God must have been looking out for them because the theatre had a horrible fire . Think it started when a light caught on fire. Saw at Half Price book a history of the fire. Foy and other performers and patrons got out, but many died horribly .The survivors tried to save people but things got really bad and they had to leave. Troy Taylor's website Ghosts of the Praire has info on both diasters.

If you are coming to Minneapolis this coming Tuesday, research Beltrami Park or Maple Hill Cemetery. The Cemetery was abandoned and later attempts were made to move monuments and bodies to Lakewood and Hillside Cemeteries. Local neighbors at the Beltrami Park ended up taking matteres in the own hands to clean it up the situation by bulldozing monuments and bodies aside the later became Beltrami Park. You can still walk through Beltrami Park find evidence of this carnage to the Cemetery. Beltrami was an explorer of his day an came to see Natural beauty of St. Anthony Falls. Also at Lakewood Cemetery you will find Senators Hubert Humphrey, entertainer Tiny Tim, and mobster "Kid Can" Bloomenfeld.

Excellent job! When i lived in Chicago i used to pass by the site of the Eastland disaster all the time before I heard of it. Then one day I finally stopped to read the plaque on the bridge. I later learned that most of the employees, if i remember correctly, lived in Berwyn, IL. And that entire neighborhoods were said to have been wiped out because of the disaster. I used to work in a building near Harpo Studio where they had kept some of the victims of the Eastland. My friends and I used to hang out at the old Dome Room- next door to the Excalibur nightclub where they kept victims of the disaster. A lot of my friends and people who worked have all said to have seen ghosts. I had my own incredible experience with a ghost there as well. The Dome Room was even featured on a ghost investigation show.

A sad but excellent video. All those lost, what a tragedy. This happened a few years after the Titanic, not the same but still as tragic. Lisa

You mention they all got really dressed up to go across to the picnic…I wonder how many of those porcelain photos of the victims on the graves were taken of them that very day & the family just used that photo because they looked so nice?

Its gonna be such an uplifting sight when the headstone is in place sir...people for generations now will see it and wonder about the boy no longer forgotten.. tragically powerful place he has taken us to here on this one guys...the eastland victims have always been the major thing to draw me to bohemia national, there are so many, even to this day when im diggin around i find new ones.....july 1915 is just burned into automatic impulse while im searching....so many children, quite a few headstones with their pictures on them and i cry there often....

Growing up in SW PA and being an appraiser who travels a dozen counties and who is a cemetery walker it is horribly sad that so many coal patch area cemeteries have mass graves from mine disasters. Most they recovered the bodies. But, entering PA from WV there is a Welcome Center and hundreds or feet below the Center are hundreds of trapped bodies from a disaster. Only a generation or two past and already slipping from memory like this disaster.

Well done my friend. I like the way you did the video. We look at the photos on the stone and hear the story then they seem to come to life(well-sorta) . We wander in our own cemetery's and wonder the same. Who were they m what did they like and what were they like.. Thank you.

Biggest problem for some I heard was 1. A Lot of people didn't know how to swim back then, 2. Women in those dresses would have been weighed down if not get caught up in those skirts! They wouldn't have been helpful to their own if they were drowning in that dress! A Bit of Trivia, the building where they put a lot of bodies to be identified is now called Harpo Studios (Oprah had her show there and she owns it) has had a lot of hauntings and the people say the same things - they see a lot of people in turn the century style dress, some even shown confused and wet.

actually, many were inside their cabins, and didn't stand a chance even if they were olympic swimmers with bathing suits on in warm water. no light, upside down, with dressers and beds rolling on them, crushing them, no way out. in the dark cold murky water, drowning quickly.

Another interesting tidbit on the Eastland disaster -when the bodies were pulled from the river to be identified they were place in a tempory morgue which was a warehouse which later became Harpo studios owned by Oprah Winfrey where she taped her talk shows. Place is said to be very haunted

I've never heard of the tragedy but I have learned much from you and will be doing some research of my own. I'm very glad little Willie is finally getting a head stone. May Willie and the rest of the dearly departed rest in peace. Thank you for taking the time to do these cemetery tours and sharing them with us.
