I have been watching your videos of Sri Lanka and I felt in this episode there has been a bit of lack of knowledge. Sigiriya is not just a hike to a rock. There's lot's to learn about ancient architecture plus history. And not forgetting the technology of building a palace on the top of the rock. It would have been better if you guys did some research on Sigiriya. It's not just a sight seeing at Sigiriya like Pidurangala. And that's why the ticket prices are higher there. Sigiriya is famous as the 8th wonder of the world. And the reason is worth reading. And the reason that they don't allow to take pictures or videoing the paintings because to protect the paintings from the flash lights. Earlier they allowed but then have to stop it. Any way hope you guys had a good time.

Also, to add little bit info on the Sigiriya rock/Lions rock(LR) and the Cave temple(CT); LR was the kindom of King Kashyapa, who ruled Lanka from 473 to 495 CE. The significance is the ponds on top the rock and they never get dry out. And how they live up by going up and down. So it’s also believed they had a secrets tunnels or king of an object( ie:like an elevator) to go up. For the paintings as Paddy, says, “recording is fine” but the issue is people r selling those pics locally and internationally which diminishes its great historical value so they’ve regulated it for the sake of protecting its true value for the future! CT’ s significance is the water drops💧 💦 travelling upwards on the rock surface. (It’s abt 20-30 degree upwards) water dripping can be seen as they’ve placed big copper pots to collect those water. So basically it’s believed they had a secret technique in their irrigation systems as well as overall to live up to a such an advance lifestyle.Hope this helps. Well done @Budgeteers!

No one abuses Elephants in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankans love their Elephant and consider it sacred. When there are orphaned elephants (found from jungle), mostly Buddhist temples take them up for adoption. Again, no abuse as complained by you. Chaining them - yes they are chained to contain. Elephants can go havoc and kill people like you and I. Riding on top of an elephant is fun for both the human and the Elephant. Charging $30 entrance to Sigiriya is very reasonable. It is not cheap to maintain them. How much you paid for the plane ticket and the Ministry of Crabs meal? How much they charge entrance to the British Museum? Really good video is this, Very well done, professional.@@TheBudgeteers

@@jackieblewett641 Props to the Buddhist temples for adopting orphaned elephants but in my personal opinion a wild animal should be let back into the wild after it is old enough to survive on its own. It's a wild animal so saying keeping them chained is only to "contain" them also means you are taking their freedom away. Rescuing a wild orphaned animal is great but keeping them chained for your own safety instead of letting it back into its natural habitat is abuse my friend.

Jackie Blewett not saying all Elephants in Sri Lanka are abused. Of course they’re not, but it is sheer wilful ignorance to pretend that none are. I think $30 admission is reasonable but on the steep side, they’re travelling on a budget so of course they were wary. Also just FYI the British Museum is free.

@@jackieblewett641 Chaining them against their will IS animal abuse. Locking them up, using them for tricks and making them give rides are all examples of abuse against elephants in these countries. The government knows it and allows it to continue too. They find them sacred yet they torture them for cash from ignorant foreigners? Elephants are tortured physically and mentally in order to be tamed. They are also not really built for carrying things on their back so they suffer to their spine and legs/feet.

So he has combined the word rastafari & restaurant and made the logo 'RASTARANT'.. You will notice that even the colors of the logo is in green, yellow & red, which represents the Rastafarian flag.. They previously let the people to get flashless/photos and videos there, but whenever they got a slight chance of having a good picture of those grafites people used the flash and it got out of control. and also around 10 years back a man spoiled those graphites with ink and destroyed some of them and they had to repair and reconstruct them and those are now not much withstanding or durable. So they banned taking photos and vids of those grafites entirely

@@TheBudgeteers you guys have left out the stories, technologies and discoveries about Sigiriya. How and why the King chose this place and all the defenses they had set up (basically every small rock you see is an archer post). The automatic water fountains (which uses water pressure from the near by tanks that also takes water to the ponds on top of the rock) still works even after 2000 years. Even the simple white marbles they have used on every steps that reflects moonlight to find the way up-to the top palace. Sigiriya has lots of things to see unlike Pidurangala Rock (the one Lina and Thijs went). But in the end $30 is just waaay too much and Pidurangala has a much better view (need to walk away from the crowd) compared to Sigiriya. TIPS: Climb Sigiriya in the morning. around 7am. and Climb Pidurangala around 4pm. for the best insta worthy shots.

Horses have been domesticated and bred specifically for riding for thousands of years, same with all the other animals you mentioned. Elephants have to be tamed in order for people to ride them and that involves hurting them physically and psychologically. They are subjected to severe torture by handlers to keep them under control. They can't even express pain otherwise they are tortured even further. I understand some people rely on them to make a living, but that doesn't make it okay.

Thank you for the courage for posting the DBS documentary on Sri Lanka. Hope same will sustain to publish this comment. This is a 2500 years plus old tradition - the very close Human - Elephant interaction in Sri Lanka. Europeans can't understand this. And you want everything changed from just one visit! The story is not that bleak as you might think. Sri Lankans love their Elephant. Elephants are not unmercifully abused in Sri Lanka. Of course there may be instances of animal cruelty - happens everywhere. Let's fight against specific acts, not an overall ban on domestication of Elephants. Again, Sri Lankans love their Elephant and consider it sacred. When there are orphaned elephants (found from jungle), mostly Buddhist temples take them up for adoption. Again, no abuse as complained by you. Chaining them - yes they are sometimes chained to contain. The Elephants can go havoc and kill people like you and I. Riding on top of an elephant is fun for both the human and the Elephant. It is not at all a burden on the giant animal. Charging $30 entrance to Sigiriya is very reasonable. It is not cheap to maintain them. Fully agree - not allowing to take photos/videos of the frescoes is weird and stupid, especially after paying $30! Should be allowed to those who paid the $30. How much they charge entrance to the British Museum? How many beef cattle are killed in one day in Belgium, what about the rights of those animals? The meaning of climbing Sigiriya is not just to get a superb view. It is important to investigate the archelogy upon the rock and what’s lying on top. You will fathom how a giant palace with subsidiary buildings stood up there more than 1500 years ago. Look at the ruins - remnants of buildings, beautiful ponds. How did the Sinhalese pumped water 700 meters up to the top to fill those tanks? The hydrolics irrigation that existed thousands of years ago in Sri Lanka is a marvel and incomprehensible for us even today. This is why people should climb up Sigiriya and not Pidurangala. Surely if one can afford to buy a plane ticket, they should be able to spend $30 to see the ‘World’s 8th wonder’. A UNESCO World Heritage sight. Really good video this one, except the unfair assessment on Elephants and Sigiriya entrance fee. Very well done video, very professional. Look forward to more Sri Lanka stuff from the Budgeteers. If possible, please reply this with your comments. Let's have a meaningful conversation than letting emotions talk.

For example there are chambers there with water tanks on top.. why.. that was the old day air conditioning system. Also do not forget to visit the Museum at the base.

Loved the little plant for the tuk tuk. And seriously applaud you guys for taking that stand on elephant rides. As they say, "when the buying stops..." Pidurangala is the name of the 'secret rock place' and while it should NOT be a secret :) it is also best experienced at sunrise. However for that you need to start your trek around 5-ish in the morning. Finally someone who appreciates a beer shandy!! And did you realize that the view of Sigiriya rock from Pidurangala is like the bust of a lion looking away from you towards the right? It is very clear in your video at 25:06 Great vlogs. Just watched your one on Uda Walawe and Yala. Once again you were spot on with regard to the need for proper park management and the negatives in feeding those elephants by the road.
