I had a SR22 for years. Picked up a TX22 back in March of 2019. Holy cow. I loved my SR22, loved it!! Had many accessories for it, tons of magazines. Took them both out after I got the TX22. Night and day difference. Honestly nothing really bad to say about the SR22. The TX22, being 16+1 (now 21+1 with the TK extended base plates) and having what I feel is a better trigger, came away the winner. My SR22 sat in the safe for months. I finally decided to let someone else have fun with it. I gave it to my nephew. I don’t regret my decision, the TX22 has been the biggest surprise firearms purchase in my life. I never expected it to be this reliable, and this fun. I’ve got so many bricks of various ammo through it, absolutely lost count. I can’t recommend the TX22 enough.

Taurus TX22 about $250 Ruger SR22 about $375 For that $125 difference, you can buy a LOT of 22LR ammo. Like 2,625 rounds of ammo ($25 for 525 rounds) Taurus also has a written lifetime warranty (as of 2018 I believe) whereas Ruger does not have a written warranty and it is up to their discretion (from I understand) if they will warranty a weapon. While it seems Ruger is pretty good and doesn't screw people over, I still like the idea of a written warranty. I think I'll be going with the TX22 for my kid and my own plinking fun. I have their Spectrum and enjoy it, plus it's a nice CC weapon. Taurus makes good guns and ridiculously cheap prices compared to other manufacturers.

You're exactly the person who might be able to help me. I'm looking for a .22LR pistol to teach my kids to shoot handguns. how's it working out for you? I ended up between the Tx22 and the SR22. I'm a ruger fan and like the small frame of the handgun but the 16+1 and price tag make it a difficult choice.

@@5.7Hemi4x4 So far about the only issue I've had is one of the mags is a bit tight, but shooting the TX22 is phenomenal. It's very accurate, comfortable to hold, and I like that it has a safety for teaching proper firearm use. My kid (age 9) can use it without issue. On the warranty side of things, Taurus is SLOW. I had to send in my Spectrum because the magazine lock was a bit flaky. There first time I sent it in the took 3 months to return it and didn't fix it saying there was nothing wrong. So I made a video of the problem, sent it back, took 4 months for them to turn it around and this time they fixed the problem. So that was unimpressive. However, it is still a solid little .380 for my wife to CC. But I digress. As for the TX22, I really enjoy it and routinely shoot about 64-96 rounds per range visit with it.

That’s the story with too many Taurus guns. The have to be sent back at buyers cost usually several times to get them working. I want my shelf gun now, not three months to a year later. The cost of shipping and hassle, plus not having your new gun and ammo wasted figuring out you have a defect isn’t worth the savings on the Ruger.

@G P B No, pricing has increased because of supply and demand. At the time I posted, that was the price on several websites new. Just like my S&W MP15 new was $399 and now it's $499. We're in the age of covid and defund the police. Gun manufacturers can't make them as fast as we're buying them.

I started with the sr22 and loved it . Had it for 5 years and ran aBout 700 rounds through it with no problems. I just got the tx22 and I truly love the fit and function of this pistol 🔫 it runs 100 % and I’m a happy man . A friend of mine wanted the sr 22 so he is now the proud owner and I don’t miss it at all . I also carry a G3 every day and own a G2 also and must say wasn’t ever a Taurus fan in the past but I am now as they are all very dependable pistols.

I went with the SR22. I did not want a striker fired pistol, and the SR22 has all the bells and whistles. To me, the TX22 is the super reliable base model, where the SR22 is the higher end with more options. The SR22 has better materials, a decocker, changeable grips, double action, single action, stainless barrel, and smaller size. The TX22 seems to be less picky about ammo, but larger. Both are good, and who knows I might add a TX22 as well, since they are pretty cheap (if you can find them).

This has been a very interesting review of the .22 caliber pistols. I definitely like the Taurus TX-22 for its simplicity and take down to clean it, plus the threaded barrel tip and capacity of the magazine. I will definitely consider purchasing it for practice and defense. Thank you for the information?

I have the sr22, I love the gun, very reliable! I do not like the mag disconnect or the way the safety is completely opposite of a standard safety. I do like that it has the decocker. I will have a TX 22, already purchased the G2c and love shooting it over my Glock 27, Taurus has become a reliable option!

You didn't show the reset on either one. You can swap out barrels on the Ruger there's a screw under the trigger. Pull the trigger to the rear and you will see the head of the bolt on the bottom side of the barrel under the trigger. You can take it off with a allen wrench

But, that 16 round magazine… With the TX22 Compact, with the slide set up to handle a red dot or similar sight, is a winner and may be the winner if compared to these two, because of that sight option. I was lucky to find a used TX-22 a couple years ago. I love the feel and ergonomics and functionality and trigger and accuracy and capacity etc. I also have a G2 Millennium 9 mm that I really like. Both are more accurate than the SR9C that I had and divested several years ago. Then in November I happened on the SR22 and decided to give it a try, even knowing that it is smaller capacity and has no shot to be more accurate than the TX-22. I just liked it. Thinking about adding a one of these 22lr pistols to my gun safe. I owned a Taurus PT911 9mm and had to send it back to Taurus for service. Took almost a year for Taurus to fix my pistol. The only way I got it back was to confront a Taurus sales rep at the outdoor show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Not happy with Taurus customer service. I own a Ruger p-85 and Walther P-38 (AC42) both are great pistols and when Ruger did warranty work on my P-85... it was done in two weeks and they gave me a free 15 rd mag and cleaning cloth. I am thinking of getting the Ruger SR22 or Walther p22???

Good video. I have both guns. Each handgun has its practically for me. The TX22 is my range and fun gun. It feels great in my hand. My TX22 has no external safety. Therefore, the SR22 is my CCW and training handgun. I trained my step-daughter with SR22. It was perfect for her hands and have the safety features she need to know for most handguns. As a CCW, it has the safeties features I wanted in a pocket handgun. I lived in a quiet neighborhood. Even though I never encounter any problems. Members in my small town had encountered attacking dogs. When I take my small dog for a walk . My SR22 is my CCW for those attacking dogs and I don't have to worried about over penetration. I still have to be careful in my surroundings such as a housing area to get to the open roads.

I get there and the guy tells me its on clearance and comes with cerakote paint job (texas flag) which actually looked pretty legit. I said this must be my lucky day. As I went to go get all the paperwork done, I saw this black pistol in the corner that was a bit cheaper and it said TX on the barrel so i was interested..........as soon as I held the TX22 it was a no brainer, it felt AMAZING in the palm of my hand. Same. Was sure I wanted the Ruger; great reviews, and they're manufactured in my home town. Much to my surprise, I left the store with the Taurus. Liked the greater magazine capacity, the grip. Didn't like the magazine safety on the Ruger that kept me from checking out the SA pull, and wasn't sure how I like the buldge at the back of the grip. Felt a bit more solid, but the TX won. Still want a Ruger someday. Maybe the Security 9.

Had the SR22. Fantastic pistol. No issues, ran thousands of rounds through it and the extra Ruger mags I had. Never did any upgrades, just shot it. Taurus announced the TX22, I got on the waiting list, and picked it up 2 days after they started selling them. Honestly, didn’t expect it to supplant the SR22, I just love 22lr semi-autos. Good holy log, the Taurus just runs. I have now shot over 3000 rounds of bulk box, mainly Thunderbolts and Aguila. Have had a total of 3 fails, all ammo related. They had strong rim strikes, but didn’t go bang. I personally feel the trigger on the TX22 is amazingly better than the DA/SA of the SR22. My SR22 was sitting in the safe, ended up selling it. I do not regret it one bit. My only issue with the TX22, is that the magazines are difficult to acquire. Almost always sold out for the 16 rounders. I couldn’t be happier with the TX22 than I am. It’s the most fun I have with a pistol when I go shooting.

You didn't mention the different way the safety works on the SR22.. UP to fire, DOWN for safe. For some folks (like me), the trained reflex is DOWN to fire. Love my TX22 - safety is same as my other guns with a safety. Would not want to have to use the SR22 in an emergency with the safety on. Have to load, lower the hammer and forget the safety - depend on the DA/SA type of action I guess....

I had a SR22 and found it to be a nice gun, except for one large flaw. The accuracy was horrible. I thought it was me, but found another guy at the range who had one who made the comment that they are a great little gun but sprayed the shots all over the place. I have a Phoenix hp22 that displays very good accuracy compared to the SR22. Why? On all my target pistols the sights are mounted directly on the barrel. This is also the case with the Phoenix. The sights on my SR22 were mounted on the slide. On my SR22 the slide had almost a sixteenth of an inch sideways play in the slide. In other words the slide with the sights was in effect floating in relation to the barrel. I took the Sr22 to a gun shop who told me this is common on guns of this type. Fortunately he had a brand new Ruger Charger that he had sitting there for a while and would trade me even up for SR22. Boy did I come out good in that deal. I know that they are a different animals. I pimped out the Charger. I added a piccatiny top rail with adjustable rear sight, a fixed adjustable front sight, a red dot sight, flash hider, strap swivels and strap. This is my first red dot, boy these are great. I'm a nut for hitting what you shoot at and this rig fills the bill to a tee. I did notice that Rugers new small auto has a tapered barrel and slide so that in battery the slide with the sights and the barrel cannot move in relation to one another. A fix for a recognized problem? Other than the accuracy problem I did like the SR22. It's raining today, I might just take a run over to a local gun shop and check out the Taurus.

Shot both well worn in as rentals at the local range. The TX22 has too much plastic, is a pain to load, and the mag kept jamming with "clean feed CCI" rounds. The Ruger was great in all these elements. Loaded very fast due to a great slide in the mag, cycled great, the reversed safety sucked. Hammer was great. However, two rounds got stuck in the breech and had to be pried out. That was after about 400 rounds though...pure torture test, I'd buy the Ruger over the Taurus.

Are you sure you're not doing something weird? Nether of these guns are known for these types of issues, especially with good ammo. Since you had issues with both guns, might be worth examining your technique, just to rule it out as a factor.

The SR22 was out for over a DECADE, before the TX22 was released. I mean.., the TX22 is great.., but, let's not break our arms, patting them on the back, in coming in w/ a great product, after your kids have far outgrown their original SR22.

Not sure how old this review is but as stated by others you can upgrade the SR22 Barrel to threaded for about $100 . The Taurus TX22 can be had for about $230 so for another $130 you have a threaded barrel that shoots 16rds. A TANDEMKROSS UPDATE. TANDEMKROSS Makes a 5rd Wingman mag extension for both which means you can have a 15rd SR22 and a 21rd Taurus TX22. Also if you want they make a canister for the threaded barrel. I’m upgrading my SR22 to the 15rd mags and when the Taurus is back in stock I’ll get one. Thanks for the comparisons

The Taurus G serious are double strike capable. I don't know if the TX22 is but I would think it would be since they have that in the G series. On a different note I have always used the Ruger MK series 22lr. I currently have a MK2 that has been super reliable (can count on one hand how many times it has malfunctioned in the last 30+ years). Most of those issues were because of an aftermarket cheap knockoff spare magazine. Until recently I have never even heard of the SR22. So as far as 22 semi auto 22lr pistols I am going to stick with what I know has been around for nearly 50 years or more and stick with the Ruger MK series. All metal construction, has A LOT of add-ons and customizable. Can even get barrels that have built-in suppressors. So many options to customize the MK series pistols it is unbelievable. Sure they are more expensive but sometimes the higher price is worth it.
