    how did you store your spare transmission? I guess that you use a towel or a bag to cover where the driveshaft goes, but did you store it with fluids? also wanna know if it was stored vertically or horizontally. I got a spare and wanna know if im storing it the right way for when I need it. thanks

    @@assinspector1391 I drained it, stored it vertically (output shaft downwards) but on blocks so that the input shaft was not resting on the ground. I have an old yoke that goes into the output end of the box but any cover would do.

Only thing is the KA trans I picked up from a buddy had the bell housing off for a while and I want to say he even hit the gears/bearings with a little water / cleaner... Do I need to re-grease the ball bearings? or apply some sort of lubricant before sealing it up or are they swimming in enough gear oil etc when filled. That helical 6 speed is bullet proof on the sentra, would be nice to use it along with that qr motor on a hardbody, with just swapping out the bellhousing. If you have any insight into this i will worship you as god. *edit* my goal is to rwd swap the qr25 while attempting to keep the trans with the bellhopusing swap. I’m not sure what setup you have or what vehicle you are referring to swapping. I usually get a Driveshaft Shop custom aluminum driveshaft made for every swap I do. A lot of times I am doing unconventional swaps and need to have them build me a custom one. You can call them and tell them what you have and what you’re trying to do, and they will tell you how and where to measure. Never had an issue.

    Hello Chance , I am wondering if there are any transmission swaps for my Nissan 720 . Originally had the Z24 but I’m swapping it for a Ka24e. Was wondering if you could enlighten me on some option I could have with this swap. Goal is for a more durable transmission because I am trying to have a good amount of horsepower with the Ka24e . Thanks -Dave P.S. love the vids, keep up the great work

  • @Inner_Sanctum

    @Inner_Sanctum

    Howdy! Honestly, the KA transmission is plenty durable up to a certain point. My car [180sx] is making well over 320whp/300ftlbs now, and it has a KA24E transmission inside an SR20DET transmission case. Literally what this video shows me doing. The KA24E transmission I used has about 200,000 miles on it, and I’m pushing that power through it without issue. Remember, torque and shock load is what kills transmissions. If you plan on making more than 350ftlbs of torque and just want to launch for drag racing with a bunch of traction, the KA transmission will be a weak link for sure. It all depends on what you have planned for the truck. People consistently run over 450whp on SR and KA transmissions, but they don’t beat this piss out of it. Drag racing and drifting tends to kill these transmissions pretty quick with higher power levels. Normal street driving use and circuit racing tends to give them a much higher survivability rate with higher power. TLDR: KA/SR transmissions are strong till about the mid 300’s, then it’s dependent on driving style.

    Inner Sanctum Thank you for fast reply. Yes I plan on drag racing the truck. I’ve heard of people swapping over the 300zx transmission for more durability. Any insight besides fabricating the mount location, transmission tunnel, and shifter location? My goals for the truck is around 400-450 whp.

    Here’s my personal take on this; for what it’s worth: Z32 and R33+ 5-speed gearboxes are damn strong with an excellent synchro-mesh design. The strongest variants are VG30 gearboxes from the Z32 300zx/fairlady and their sister gearboxes in any RB25DET setup from R33-R34 Skylines and so on. I personally like the RB gearbox due to not having a linkage setup like a Z32 gearbox. However, their internals are the same strength wise and overall smoothness. I feel that they are some of the best 5-speed gearboxes that Nissan has ever made. With that being said, here’s why I wouldn’t: 1. Sourcing. These gearboxes are getting very expensive and harder to find in good condition which lends to my next point. 2. Age. Aside from just finding them, you have to remember that they are getting quite old, and depending on who has owned them, they have seen a lot of action. Here’s my recommendation: If you’re serious about making a strong setup you’d be doing yourself a service by going the CD009 6-speed route out of any 06+ Z33 350z/G35 or even going newer with the JK series and dealing with the internal slave. These transmissions are abundant, affordable, and insanely robust. You also have the added bonus of another gear to get things dialed in better. The adaption cost is the roughly the same for both routes, and you are not going to have an issue finding a good condition CD009 for “cheap”. Mine was about $600 and it’s from a low mile car. Most good RB and Z32 transmissions are going for twice that with the same mileage and condition. Both routes require a custom driveshaft and mounts as well. The only thing with the CD009 is that it doesn’t have an internal speed sensor, but most just go with the Dakota Digital GPS sender anyways. Easier to wire, manage, and far more accurate. At the end of the day I like to buy once and cry once. The CD009 is a superior transmission in all respects to its predecessor. The fact that it would end up being cheaper by the end only makes it that much sweeter of a deal. Hope that helps.

    Yes. How different depends on what KA24E you’re talking about. 240sx KA24E and 240sx KA24DE transmissions have very minor differences. The vent tube routing and some later DEs have the crank angle sensor port. D21 KA24E vs 240sx KA24DE are very different. KA24, SR20, CA18, and RB20 transmission internals are all the same strength. Just depends on how well they were taken care of before you get one. It's not HP that kills the transmission. It's torque, traction, and shock load. If you have a 500hp engine and don't drive hard, it will maybe hold up. However, you will annihilate that transmission in any other form of driving.

    @@lawrenceclaridge6401 rb25det, vg30de/dett, VQ35 CD009 series, or VQ37 JK series are all great options for the 500 range. They can take a lot of abuse and hold a great deal of power. The CD and JK trans will require that you do not constantly slam into gears without proper clutch timing. Even with the revised synchros in the CD009 and later JK transmissions, the synchros are still subject to damage and can prematurely fail or wear and cause grinding and etc... What transmission can I put on my ka24e that can handle 400 to 450 hp

  • @Inner_Sanctum

    @Inner_Sanctum

    3 жыл бұрын

    joseph schmier so a few things here: 1. The horsepower number isn’t what kills the trans, it’s the torque and how the transmission is loaded. Shock, due to sufficient traction and gobs of torque, is what generally destroys the gears. Unless you have a really worn out trans that wasn’t taken care of that just breaks during normal operation. 2. Completely depends on what you’re using the vehicle for and how you drive. I’ve owned a few 400hp cars with stock SR/KA transmissions and didn’t have an issue. That said, I have some friends that will destroy any trans they put behind their engine because... reasons. If you are making 400-450 whp on a KA24E, then you are probably making around 360 ftlbs+ of torque. If you are racing the vehicle hard, I would suggest adapting an RB25DET or VG30 5-speed trans. The CD009 6-speed transmission is a great option as well. I posted a video showing the install. It can be adapted to both SR and KA “easily”. There are just too many variables to consider when talking about arbitrary HP numbers. Tire size, diff, clutch/pressure plate type, driving style, and sport all play a huge roll. Example: If you are drifting an S13 and run small wheels and tires, it’s not hard to keep a stock transmission alive around 400hp. It’s when you step up to bigger wheels and tires that it becomes a real problem. If you’re running 255/40r17 with 17x9.5 wheels, you are going to destroy that transmission at some point drifting. The problem becomes even more severe for drag racing. Bigger/stickier tires with a strong clutch will easily find the weakest link in your entire driveline. Road racing is the most forgiving on the stock trans and what I was primarily doing. I was going through brakes, not transmissions lol. Hope this helps.

    I would like to add my 2 cents as I really researched and did the same housing swap. It’s not cost effective to try to rebuild the SR transmission and this is a great mod because KA internals are still available in the USA. So if you have a SR it’s best to get a KA trans so you can rebuild it fairly cheap.

    Another thing I figured out is after installing the input shaft cover you should pull the input shaft and see if there’s any in/out play, if there is it can effect 4th gear engagement and/or pop out. I found a simple solution to this, just remove the gasket and use RTV. This way the cover holds the input shaft bearing outer race and have a nice crisp solid 4th gear engagement.

    Ozzy Hernandez Sometimes it’s really hard to find a good SR or KA transmission in your area. This comes in handy because you’re able to swap bellhousings in the event you cannot find one. Say you have an SR20 in your car and you go to a drift event. 20 minutes in, you destroy the trans. You get home and start looking around for an SR transmission, but no one has one in the area, or there is one, but the person is asking a lot for it. However, you find that there are plenty of people that have KA transmissions and they are cheap compared to that one SR trans you found. Well, you already have the SR bellhousing from the trans that’s on your car already. So you go and buy a cheap KA trans and swap your SR bellhousing onto it. Problem solved.
