We had the honor of meeting our little squirrel 6 weeks ago and we are raising him. He has brought us so much joy, it’s hard to describe. He is with us pretty much all day, except when he sleeps. They are such amazing animals!

Squirrels are SO underrated, I think it's a compliment that people call them "tree rats". Rats are some of the cleanest, smartest, most intuitive & tactile animals - squirrels are just the wild, tree-roaming version of that. Plus I love their big floofy tails 😃

We had a wild squirrel that moved into our yard, she only had half a tail, so that's how we recognized her. Of course we named her Half Tail, I know, very original. She never let us touch her, but she didn't run from us either. She would come down from her nest and hang out within a few feet of us anytime we were out. We thought of her as one of the family. We know she raised several families over the years, they would leave home and make their own way, but Half Tail always stayed. She would chirp at me everyday when I got home from work, while sitting on the bench she had claimed as her own. I would bring her some nuts or the occasional cookie, she'd take her snack and run up the tree. It was our ritual. One day I came home from work to find she had died curled up on her bench. I think she knew we would find her and it was her way of saying goodbye. We cried as I buried her with our other animals that had passed. We enjoyed her company for well over five years, I lost count. We loved her, and I think she loved us, in her own way

What a special friendship. I started putting a berry or two out for this baby squirrel that seemed to be picked on by his young siblings. He started coming up to us as he trusted that we would not hurt him. He has sort of been adopted by us, (or maybe he adopted us?) He sees us outside at any time and will excitedly ( and you can tell it is that he is happy) race across the entire roof, jump tree to tree to land in a certain tree that he can meet us at face level - and then hang out with us for as long as we are outside! My son likes to go sit in a bench in our yard facing the tree, and do his schoolwork. Joey will often lay down on the branch facing my teen son and go to sleep! We have named him Joey, and when we go out we just say "Jo-e-y, where is our Jo-e-y" and he will come running from where ever he is. One day we saw a squirrel dead in the road, in front of our home, and I cried, thinking it was him, as he did not come to us that day. I had no idea that I would feel as if I lost a actual pet/friend! Then later that evening we saw Joey sitting in the road looking for a long time at the other squirrel, like he knew him. The next morning Joey came running again like usual, racing through the trees to our special spot. There is just something so sweet about an unexpected friendship with an animal like Joey. It would be a sad day to move from this house, and not see my Joey every few days . Life is about the small things, too, like this. I loved your story, and thought i'd share ours.

Animal Lover I have a very smart one that I give peanuts to almost every day. She knows the exact time I leave for work, and the exact time I come back. Sits on a chair on the porch waiting for me in the morning, and on top of a fence post within arms reach of where I park my car in the afternoon. And oddly, she's either outlived at least 3 groups of her own babies, (as we're surround by highways and see them dead all the time-aka, she somehow has avoided getting hit herself for years) or they weren't smart enough to understand the free food concept like she does, and left.

I have been taming wild Grey and Red squirrels since I was a little kid. Squirrels live up to 20 years in captivity and in the wild, the average life expectancy is 3-5 years after weaning. However, as the squirrel ages, they get wiser and their life expectancy climbs. If they reach 3years old, they will generally live at least 10 years pending an infection or major injury. Having humans around that provide food helps, though far too many consider them a nuisance and do everything they can to prevent the squirrels from getting at the food they put out for birds. I think they are amazing little devils with incredible problem-solving abilities and a very high level of intelligence. I cherish every second I spend with them.

I watched docu about squirrels and they are smart and sneaky as hell. They often hide nuts in the ground, for later - and other squirrels watch them, so they can steal it - if they can get away with it - if not, the thief is punished. It came even to a point, where one squirrel pretended it did hide the nut, to fool the thief, and then proceeded to hide it elsewhere - and it made sure, that no thief has seen it. I was honestly shocked, how clever they can be.
