My neighborhood is full of trees and a lot of squirrels. There's times when they all start barking and chattering at the same time. So cute though and one has even let me pet it.

they're everywhere.....the squirrels......

They make these noises all the time where there are cats around. Out the back of my house, if they spot a cat they bark and squeak for half an hour!!! lol

We see momma cats take down squirrels over half their size, running back with it in the cats mouth like it was no big deal. Babies gotta eat, so mamas gotta eat.

I think it's either a territorial call or a warning call, alerting other squirrels to be on guard. I only ever hear them make this noise when I or my cat get too close to the trees they are in in my back yard.

I have a squirrel I raised and he's only made that sound when he has nightmares. I personally find the sound cute, but to each their own. =P

Actually some birds do similar stuff I don't know about your area but in NC we have birds that sound like squirrel barks and some that sound like the chatter

They have different sequences of this to communicate with other squirrels

I got 3 squirrels that comes and eat HobKnobs on my bedroom balcony. I usually leave a few bits out for them. When it runs out, they usually call me like this. Once I poke my head out the door they always stop but just look up at me like....'where my food??' lol...they are so cute

Yes it is a warning sound for predators and other unwelcome things, so as you can imagine, its also a territorial warning as well. Whenever a squirrel is under stress, they do 4 things which are flicking the tail, chitter, bark and chatter their teeth. the teeth chattering indicates extreme stress, probably from a flood of adrenaline. If the squirrel is under even more stress "near shock" it will begin to cry "whimper" repeating the same sounding whimper.

My university has huge grass areas with a lot of squirrels. One day, I wanted to see one of them closer, so I stepped forward and the squirrel just ran up to a tree and started making these noises. It was so cute that the squirrel was warning its friends around about a huge hooman haha. I stepped back, so as not to bother them😂❤️

It's impossible to not laugh at this. Makes my day!

There was a squirrel in my back yard this morning and it was barking and every once in a while making this noise! Me and my mom were laughing and really confused because we'd never heard a squirrel making that noise before.

I recorded the sounds from this video on my android phone. Went out side near the woods, played it for about 3 1/2 minutes. During that time I skipped forward and backward changing the sounds and then stopped. In just a little bit there were 2 squirrels talking back. Who needs a squirrel call. Thanks for the video.

OMG! It confirms the voice of the squirrel... sadly the one I heard was when it was being hunted by my neighborhood cats... My mum is into gardening and started wondering where all the squirrel were disappearing. Late at night I was out checking and saw the grim fight on top of a tree. Sadly their were two cats hunting in a pair. The poor chap had no chance. I tried to shoo them away but they were too high up. No wonder my dog hates those cats. Im gonna build a cat-proof home.

I bought my 1st camcorder a yr ago & one of the 1st things I recorded was a squirrel doing this to me. Only difference: I was inside so you can't hear it as well, but the squirrel is facing directly at me & the open-mouthed look on its face whenever it squeals is priceless! Its mouth makes a perfect little o. Judging from the one in my video & yours, it looks like they use a lot of muscle to make this sound. On mine u can see it get ready & then "clinch"! Stupid squirrels! Aren't they great?!

Yea, they always hated when our cat was in the yard.

Well we've released them now. But they did eventually start making this sound, but I think it was just because they heard other squirrels in our neighborhood doing it. They would often mimic things they saw and heard the wild squirrels doing.

Theres a squirrel that always hangs out in my tree that makes the same noise and he/she is swinging it's tail around at the same time.

Owners of such properties would have to ~invest in the better technology, & not only to record things 24/7 (or whatever hours they'd consider), but higher quality files take up more room & if there's multiple cameras, that means significantly more of everything & that's why so many just get the cheapest quality instead.. & they're typically using at least 2-6 cameras & storing the files on a rotating-out basis ie older ones deleted for newer as space is needed & so on & of course lower quality = more room on all the drives (fewer there may be) being used.. comparing that to a single handheld camcorder from the late 2000s era (I particularly enjoyed the great quality of my Lumix TZ3, for example; not sure what this person used tho but was likely similar) isn't accurate as they're different situations & setups overall. Hopefully tho by the end of the 2020s, most places will be able to get all their stuff upgraded to much better equipment & tech! ☆

For a long time I would hear that specific sound in my neighborhood, and I always assumed it was birds. Then, my first semester at college, I heard it again, I glanced at the small tree it was coming from, and I saw it was a squirrel! The next day, I made another walk through campus... and I saw an eagle on a fencepost. Poor barking, squeaking bastard wouldn't have stood a chance :P

I've heard when they squeak "upwards" at the end, it means the danger is above. Possibly could have been a hawk.

Wow, I wonder what s/he is saying. Squirrels are very resourcfull and smart, new evidence is showing they remember where they hide all of their acorns, they hide up to 100 plus that is smart, many folks cannot remember where they put their keys!

I heard and then saw a squirrel barking mid way up a 50 ft tree in an area where the overripe seeds of the palms were dropping and splattering on windshields etc. Is it possible the animal was upset because his food was ripening too fast - it has been hot in our area (south Florida)
