Squid - Narrator (Official Video) ft. Martha Skye Murphy
Музыка
Taken from the album Bright Green Field, out 7th May: brightgreenfield.squidband.uk/
We're excited to announce our debut album Bright Green Field, out 7th May on WARP! This is the debut album we’ve always wanted to make and without a doubt the most ambitious thing we’ve ever done. We can’t wait for you to hear the whole thing. And especially to be able to play it to you in person…….
‘Narrator’ features the fantastic Martha Skye Murphy on vocals. The music video is directed by Felix Geen.
The track was inspired by the 2019 film A Long Day's Journey Into Night, the song follows a man who is losing the distinction between memory, dream and reality and how you can often mould your memories of people to fit a narrative that benefits your ego. Martha Skye Murphy, the track's guest vocalist, made the point that the unreliable narrator is, more often than not, a male who wishes to portray women as submissive characters in their story. After some discussions with Martha she thought it’d be a good idea that she play the part of the woman wanting to break free from the dominating story the male has set.

So I had listened to this album once. I liked it. The second time I put it on was waiting on an airplane to take off. As we were taxiing for takeoff this song came on. As we left the ground the end of the song came on and Martha started screaming. The sound of her squeals and the turbulence made me instantly terrified, like we were going to crash. I gripped my arm rests tight and assured myself everything was fine. The song ended and I thought to myself, "holy shit." I'll never forget that once in a lifetime experience.

For real, after playing it so many times... I absolutely love the groove with the clean spicy guitar riffs. But what it does for me is totally that fugazi part which he says repeatedly "i play mine" until it explodes exactly where it should go. The screaming at the end is fantastic, refreshing, really amazing. The bass at the end just keeps on giving, fantastic stuff, for real.

LIstening to the album for the first time today I was absolutely gobsmacked. For this to be a debut album from any band anywhere, it's just insane. No debut album has given me such a fundamental shake for years. This band are going to be enormous.

The last part of this song, with the visuals and the manic screaming and faces crumbling apart, is the very embodiment of how COVID19 lockdown is making me feel. Maybe the whole "narrator" concept is of a lonely person going through their house and garden either talking to themselves, or having a mad internal dialogue, during the pandemic. Not sure... I guess we may all have our ideas about what inspired this brilliant yet insane piece of music.
