This is one of those situations where I'd almost want the higher ups of a company to be focused solely on profits because pride and jealousy are the worst kinds of neighbors to have to deal with. You can convince some CEO or board member to not do microtransactions because while it might make them shitloads in the short term the long term damages to the brand have far worse consequences monetarily. It's a difficult path to convince someone like that, but if they really care about the cash you can make that argument and know generally how it will be perceived. It's just about impossible to make someone who has attached themselves to something admit that it's going wrong, even if it's demonstrable by facts and through multiple other people with common sense. When your disagreeing it's subconsciously an attack on that type of person's identity, at least in their own mind, and when you understand this you'll know the futility in pressing that type of argument. At that point it's more about emotional appeals. It's irrational and stupid, but you have to reach someone in that state of mind through their heart.

Can someone actually explain to me what an NFT game would look like? Like would it be a game that’s just a jpeg?

I haven't looked deeply into it, but my understanding is that you would "own" stuff in game and there would be a dollar value placed on everything you have available creating an economy where the developer would then skim a little off the top of every transaction. So you would "play to earn" and then trades and sales generate revenue. To me it sounds similar to CS:GO skins or Steam trading cards, but unlike those where Steam and Valve make it clear that you don't own shit and they can pull the plug any time they want, NFT games want you to think you actually have legal ownership of your nonexistent virtual items that disappear the moment somebody unplugs the server.

Honestly, between Spirits Within and the decade of trash mobile games, SE deserves to lose 70% of their company every few years, keeps 'em humble. It's just that they make the best employees suffer because of CEO decisions. I;m sure that him eating all the money is gonna cripple every one but him as he severances packages himself out.

Sad part is Triangle Strategy isn't getting the attention it deserves and will most likely be considered a failure by the bigwigs at Square (despite selling well for a tactical RPG), pretty much sealing the deal on them continuing the IP outside of adding characters to one of their gacha mobile games. R.I.P. to the closest thing to a new FF tactics game we will ever get.

It's weird to me how they actually marketed Triangle Strategy. a "brand new" IP that definenetly pushed some copies based on visibility alone. But they barely marketed neo: twewy at all. A game that had an anime put out and a recent re-release of the first game. It must have been the nintendo publishing. Square sends its games out to die unless someone else foots the bill for life support. Pats right. They just BURN money.

thing is games have changed production wise a lot over the last 10 years alone. Hence why some companies are trying to branch out from videogames alone to other avenues, because game development has turned into kind of a gamble again. Back then then you could take 20-30 people round about and get a game out in a reasonable amount of time of maybe 6 months to a year, and if you get lucky, it becomes a massive hit that brings in over triple the amount you invested in. Nowadays though? You need small armies to make a modern tech level game, and even then, this process takes up at least 4-5 years, if you are lucky and nothing goes wrong. Then, on top of all of that, thanks to how complicated coding has turned with modern engines and what not, there is also the potentiall issue of bugs ruining a game right on launch, regardless of if it is otherwise a great game or not. We have now seen, in the last years alone, many, many high profile games that just crashed and burned the moment they hit the market, which, in turn alarmed the owners of those companies. Add in the current state of the world, and yeah. More DLC. More random forced online connectivity. More and more absurd anti-piracy tactics. And now this whole NFT nonsense. As silly as this might sound, but stuff like this is considered a saver bet then to just publish a good game, because, statistically, it kinda is, like it or not (at least if you aim to make billions, but this is anotehr topic again).

“Nowadays though? You need small armies to make a modern tech level game…” Or, how about this: make a series of smaller games that cost less and could possibly be a hit thus forming another franchise that you could build on. Smaller games make money when the effort isn’t solely put into how to pull more money out of people’s pockets. They even used to do this before the online gaming era, but every company now just wants to do Call of Duty numbers and nothing else.
