SQUATS ARE BACK! | Reaction & Lore

Squats are back! Well, apparently they're the LEAGUE OF VOTANN (which has it's own problems), so here's a reaction video where I have some opinions on that!

I still have the old squat models including the hell's angels biker figures and a full epic army of them, love the old / odd look of them. I always hoped they'd comeback and always had an opinion for how they'd look and this isn't it, saying that though, I like the new figures. Do they have the old school biker look, nope but a bit of kit bashing and the right paint job, who knows. The hover bike model would make a killer trike with the wheels of the new votann atv.

PS - I really like the model for now but the real test will come when we get a wider look at the range and see how the models contextualise each other. But I do feel the colour scheme they've chosen to go with is a bit bland/generic sci fi. Saw someone playing around with different colours in photoshop and they really changed the character of the model.

A couple of curiosities about the name "Wotan": He's the God that the day "Wednesday" is dedicated to, much like "Thursday" was originally "Thor'sDay" - it's "Wotan'sDay". Also (but this is debated, I can't find it on the internet) it's the base for both the name "Tervigon" and "Termagant", as both of these are anglicization of "Trivigante" , which is itself an italianized form of "Thor-Wotan". This amalgam of pagan norse Gods was part of the "Islamic anti-trinity" that misguided medieval Christians believed to be part of Muslim religion, alongside Mohammad and "Apollyon" (all non-christian creeds rolled into one!) Another thing to note: Warhammer Fantasy Dwarfs, much like other races, were supposed to have a "real world equivalent", (much like the Lizardmen were Mesoamericans and the Tomb Kings were Egyptians and the Ogre Kingdoms were the Mongols) the Dwarfs were clearly inspired by the Norse, having runes and names like "Makaisson". So with this "Votann" name they are, I believe, doing a callback to Warhammer Fantasy dwarfs who in turn are a callback to the Norse peoples.

11:23 I love that idea too! It really gives the feeling humanity being in the ascent with technology until it all collapsed and descended into the almost medieval designs the Imperium is now. Also, the Man of Iron model from the Blackstone Fortress boardgame has similar design aesthetics to pre-strife humanity as well. I like that they're able to keep it aesthetically cohesive like that.

i'm a big fan of the practical looking, near-future space suit. with the primaris overhaul GW have been really leaning into pumping models full of verisimilitudinous greebly over-design, and i think this first model does that very well (i super don't get how people think this guy looks "plain") i see what people mean when they say it reminds them of tau models, especially the gun. that 45 degree battery combined with the barrel details immediately reminded me of a crisis suit fusion blaster also, looking at the model and the art side by side i can't help but notice the prominence of that carabiner clip on both their belts - maybe hinting at a common special rule, like endrinriggers being able to latch onto transports, or maybe like scions deepstriking from aircraft on ropes? one thing i feel like is missing from this first model is a melee weapon. the dwarf aesthetic is heavily reliant on axes, so i'm a little surprised even this basic rifle trooper doesn't have a handaxe or hammer or something. from the silhouette images we can see 1 guy has a pick, which hints at there being troops who are actually miners but do some combat work on the side, which is cool

I'm not sure that pulling from old Germanic imagery/mythology is really as much of a mistake as you seem to think, that milieu is where we derived Dwarfs from in the first place and the Space Wolves couldn't be *more* "Vikings but with power armour" if GW tried. I'm honestly more concerned with why the powers that be chose to dust off the beloved starfaring stunties NOW... ...it couldn't have anything to do with restoring some customer goodwill after recent unpopular moves, could it? I'd hate to think this "new faction" was shunted out the door as a PR move.

I did run across a suggestion that using Wotan is a deep cut reference to a sentient super computer in Doctor Who. Whether or not its true, the idea that they are ruled / guided by ‘heretical’ AI could be a way to make them grimdark without making them outright evil.

Iirc there's some 40K lore where AI such as a dark age ship were actually kinda more like something out of the Culture novels so could be something like that where there's more of a symbiotic relationship between the two, which I think would be cool cos you could have Men Of Iron as kinda their Dreadnought equivalents on the battlefield.

@@Azoth86730 demiurges are xenos as far as the empire is concerned but they don’t have much knowledge about them really. And Demiurges are basically short bearded abhumans who gave the Tau their advanced weapon tech. Now check the new League of Votann mini and note how similar that weapon is to Tau weapons…

I like the hint that they might include some advanced tech (A.I. or Men of Iron) in this faction... allows for the race to still have some questionable elements, but hopefully removed from some of the areas GW has been mired in. Releasing this as a full faction means GW has a chance to bed in a nice diverse set of characters, as standard, from the very start and then it simply need not be a big deal going forward... then you can just focus on characters, lore and gameplay.

Personally I'm hyped for there return, I was to young so when 40k came into my radar Squats where already gone but for many years I enjoyed the theme and design of Dwarves in fiction, so I'm all aboard there return. Unless future reveals really goes south I frankly think they alone might finally push me of my more then decade long fence sitting and actually get into painting a 40k army.

To elaborate on your points about the "Martin tradition". Mechanicum doctrine is a fanatical devotion to the STC. Though we do have reason to believe there is some amount of C'Tan influence. After the great arks left the Sol system with their STCs at sub light speed Terra likely continued to research new technology until the Age of Strife. It's possible that the Ural tech clans had technology greatly advanced to that of Mars in M30. The eastern European accent might indicate that these squats descend from a later wave of Terran diaspora that originated from the Ural tech clans.

I quite like the look of his armor and equipment. I'm also a Tau player, so take that as you will. It would be cool if the older Squat designs made their way in for units like scouts or slayers. This new design feels like a nice middle-ground between the flak jackets and the exo-armor.

Thanks for bringing me up to speed with the lore, aesthetics and cues towards past and present armies. I got involved with 40K in late 3rd - early 4th edition so I missed Squats but always heard of them as some sort of phantom faction that was dropped beyond the sprinkle of models in games like Necromunda and Blackstone Fortress etc. I'm hoping your proposal that GW introduce more humanoid factions to dilute the fascist elements within the fandom bears fruit, in lieu of the satire of the past. And I find your format very personable and competent (especially with the interspersal of graphics), like we're talking around a table without hyperbole. All the best.

I'm going to try and back up the "galactic core = high gravity thing": ok so a solar system is formed from a "solar nebula" which is basically all the bits of dust that form a sun, solar accretion disk, planets etc. As the galactic core is denser, more dust will be attracted toward it meaning that the solar nebula will be bigger/thicker. Bigger/thicker nebula will form larger stars and bigger planets. Therefore closer to the galactic core = bigger planets (maybe).

Yes! Now the Squats reveal is official :-) Thanks Ian - couldn't have had a more appropriate reaction video outside of an Adeptus Arbites faction return ;-) Another video suggestion - review on the new Maelstrom (Tempest of War) card deck? I liked your 'rules getting too complex video' - this might a good follow up counter to that "does it make 9th edition manageable?". Just a thought - keep up the fantastic content!

I like how the model has lots of practical details that indicate that this guy probably isn't a professional soldier but some kind of worker in a militia. He's got quite sensible rubber kneepads, a carabiner stuck to his belt, a lamp on his collar, and some kind of datapad on his wrist.

My son and I watched the video they released and had no idea what the reveal was going to be. We were totally surprised it was Squats. Happy to see them back. I don't have anything bad to say about the change in design aesthetic, only that it makes sense that 30 years later it would be updated. Most of the miniatures have had design updates (or are currently going through some like the Eldar) of one kind or another, so it makes sense that the new squat models would be updated as well. Plus, this is just one model. If the League of Votann is a totally new faction like GW says, then there will most likely be different types of troops. So, another box set of updated, yet more standard-looking squats, could also be in production. I think judging one model out of a whole faction is like watching a 35-second teaser trailer and assuming the movie will stink. I'm happy to see them back and looking forward to what GW has in store, and that doesn't happen much for me anymore.
